View Full Version : Mallrats - why do people hate it so?
last night I watched Mallrats for the first time, and I must say I really enjoyed it. I know that not everyone is a Kevin Smith fan and most of those that are detest this film with a passion normally reserved for Paul Ross "reviews". It honestly gave me exactly what I thought it was going to give me - a reason to disengage my brain and chuckle and laugh for 90 mins.

Dunno what youre talking about, my favourite movie- friday nite wouldnt be the same- as do all my friends agree.
I think alot of people were expecting another clerks but he wanted to do a bigger picture- if you see the dvd with the deleted scenes you'll realise he wasnt really ready for that much funding....but like i said i reckon his best movie!

Hear hear!
Love the bit where they pull a stupid pose as Bob gets his utility belt out and harpoons them to safety.
"Where does he get those wonderful toys?"
Seen Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back yet? Mallrats times 100!:D

I think Mallrats is a great film. I was a bit disappointed with Clerks having read so many great write ups but this one really made me laugh. Ok, so it's not everyone's type of humour but it's one I can watch over and over again.
I love the chocolate pretzel handshake! Jason Lee is fantastic in it.

People hate it because they can't see the sailboat.

I think it's quite funny, though I can see how some people might find a film with jokes about "stinkpalming" a tad unsophisticated. Clerks and Dogma strike a balance between intelligent observations about life, relationships and religion and very silly and sick humour, Chasing Amy is more weighted towards the thoughtful stuff and Mallrats and Jay & Silent Bob (which you will love if you liked this) lose the smart stuff and crank up the juvenile jokes.
Oh I love Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back - Mallrats was the only Kevin Smith film that I hadn't seen - I picked it up from Comet for something like £8.00:clap:

I saw it a few years ago on video and thought it was the biggest load of crap I had seen in a long time. Maybe I should watch this again to be sure.
Then again - life's too short...
yep - Mallrats remains my fave KS movie, and therefore the most watched.......
try the video commentary track on the R1 - funny!

Watched it Sunday to stop me from thinking about Monday. It worked a treat! This and JABSB are easily my 2 fave KS films. DOGMA I hated (due to the poo monster and the incredibly annoying Chris Rock), Chasing Amy was OK and Clerks I still haven't seen yet.

Have to agree, top film.
Perhaps the peope who 'hate' it are the ones who prefer the more thoughtful Kevin Smith films.
Personally I love all his stuff, hated Chasing Amy the first time I watched it but I gave it another try and it grew on me.
I love all KS films, Malrats is probably the funniest.

I think mallrats is a good example of a inexperienced director making good with major studio money. All the rough and unsophistication of Clerks were tighten up and made into a stonking movie. The probalem with Jay and silent bob is the smarmy inside jokes whereas Mallrats was innocent fun. Why it bombed and was critically maul is beyond me. This movie caused Kevin smith to go indie again where he went on and churned out movies that were nothing but copies of clerks.
I like all his movies too, but it's my 2nd favourite of his (after Chasing Amy) and my wife's overall favourite.
Snoogins!
I still don't think he's bettered Clerks.

Thius was the first KS film I saw (on BBC last year) and thought it was great - got it on DVD now, and also like Dogma. I haven't seen any other's yet.
Fantastic Film one of my favourites and it has one of the most entertaining audio commentries I've heard :)
Love Clerks and Mallrats but I have never watched Chasing Amy yet is it any good?

Really enjoyed Mallrats - I first saw it on BBC ages ago, and got the DVD as soon as I got my player.
Only thing I absolutley HATE about it is Jay and Silent Bob.
SB is tedious, and the stoner Jay is irritating.
The worst "comic" duo since Canon and Ball.
One of my all time fave movies
Kevin Smith is a God! Chasing Amy is more 'grown up' than Mallrats but very much worth seeing. And 'Strikes Back' actually made me fall off the seat in the cinema I laughed so hard! Dogma, Clerks, see them all :D

Tis a very good film, apart from the terrible whole game show ending. IMO.
I like KS movies, but thing he should not edit them!
Chasing Amy and Dogma should def loose some scenes.
The perennial question...does anyone know if Clerks, etc, is going to get a R2 release? Mallrats R2 doesn't have all the cool extras, and Chasing Amy seems to only be available in HMV for lots of money. I remember reading somewhere that the R4 release of Clerks was to be avoided, though I can't remember why...

Love the conversation between Brodie and TS about Superman and Lois Lane!
Oh, and the gameshow at the end.

and the whole debate on whether the cookie-stand is classed as part of the food court or "an autonomous unit for mid-mall snacking"
Love that film.

Mallrats has always been my favourite Kevin Smith film - mainly because of it's knowing childish humour which I think give's the film it's charm. And Jason Lee gives a great performance here as in Chasing Amy.
Although, having said all that, I haven't yet seen Clerks yet so my opinion probably counts for nothing! :)

i saw them all "in order" as it were (even catching clerks at the cinema here in early 1995) and although overall i think chasing amy is the best, my favourite is definitely mallrats. just so much to love in that movie, so damn funny, and jason lee's performance in his first big screen outing is outstanding.
Jason Lee is definitely the highlight in both Mallrats and Chasing Amy. His Bankey character was hillariously grumpy! It's a shame that he was used so sparingly in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, because he was the reason I looked forward to seeing that film so much, for a (double) repeat performance.
Given the tedium of 99% of the deleted footage it's amazing the film is as good as it is.
Certainly not a classic but very, very watchable all the same.

"That kid... is back on the escalator!"
I kinda liked how the "sex wounds" scene from Chasing Amy was supposed to be in Mallrats - it goes like this - The Food Court/Cookie Stand conversation takes place - then, Brodie's friend Hooper who works in the food court comes over and repeats the same thing that Brodie had just said - then (T.S.) Quint, Brodie an Hooper ( ) show off their scars and stories like in Chasing Amy (and another movie, the title of which escapes me.... ;)
Edited : Damn Smilies!
Creamstick ...... do you mean :-
Lethal Weapon 3 .......... or............
National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon 1 :p ;)
Absolutely love Chasing Amy (deffo one of my favourite movies and the only Criterion in my collection), enjoyed Clerks and Dogma, not seen Mallrats or J&SB, bit worried I won't like them as I think I've just realised I'm one of those people who prefer the more 'thoughtful' KS films....
just watched Jay and Silent Bob what a load of rubbish! :D :oh-hum: quite liked Dogma though.

Thats pretty much how Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back is delivered - while in the previous films they have been support characters, in J&SBSB they take centre stage with most everyone from the previous films taking back seat support roles.
I watched Dogma on Sky first, thought it was excellent. Then me and Silent Bob on here got friendly :norty: and he told me about the other films in the series, got them all now bar Mallrats (but borrowed SB's copy). All the films are excellent I reckon, not sure I could pick a favourite out of them.
EDIT: Love the way KS talks about how crap DVD is on the Chasing Amy commentary, then on the DVD he aplogises (I have it on LD as well).

I was never exactly what you would call a Kevin Smith fan, though i did see Clerks when it came out. However, in the space of the last year, I have seen and enjoyed JASBSB, Dogma( a repeat watch, and one in which my enjoyment of the movie grew), Mallrats ( just last week) and I have come to the decision that I am indeed, a fan of Kevin Smith....i love his films and if they are to be considered childish...then I guess that makes me a 38 year old child:nuts:
Watched this last night and although I didn't find it as funny as Clerks 1 and 2, I did enjoy it.
Jason Lee was funny in it, especially the times he does that smirk/grin when he was in the clothes shop and on the stage at the end.:D

Mallrats rocks man, i bought this on HD DVD a while ago and it is still as good as I remeber it. For all you KS fans hope you are listening to his weekly podcast, easily the funniest thing out there and a great insight into what he really is like.
