If you like Jean Reno and Luc Besson then there is every chance that you will warm to this action comedy.

I saw this on an airplane on the reurn leg from Tokyo, which is where this film is predominatly set.

It follows the life of Hubert Fiorentini (Jean Reno) a highly strung French cop with a mighty right hook. After a run in with his boss he is forced to take leave and his past catches up with him.

I will not say too much about the plot as it unfolds so quickly and is half the fun of the movie.

It's typically Besson and well worth a watch.

A quick search on these very forums for "Wasabi" revealed nothing, which really surprised me. Saying that his other work Yamakasi which was as good as this movie didn't get much, if any feedback.

well...yep...great music as usual for besson's movies.

Yamakasi will certainly appeal to other forum members (produced by Besson).

When I was in HK back in February, I watched Wasabi in the local cinema and loved it to bits !

I just had a quick look to find out who is selling it and the only places are either Amazon France and Amazon Japan. Amazon Fr have it for 15 pounds or so, but I can't decipher whether or not it has English subs at all!

And Yamakasi is another top french flick that should be bought straight away !

EDIT Thanks to jchante, I have found out there is no Englsih sub on the french release :(

the HK release of Yamakasi has had it's price cut to a more affordable (approx) HK$40 range. Anamorphic, english subs and DTS. Nothing else apart from that, and also I haven't bought it yet, so don't know how accurate I was on those specs :p

Personally i'd avoid 'Yamakasi' it's not one of Besson's better efforts. It's paced very much like the 'Taxi' films but for me lacked those films wit and sheer sense of fun.

Just got round to watching Wasabi and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Very powderpuff film with not much substance but still entertaining for a Saturday afternoon.

Reno does his usual sterling job and Ryoko Hirosue is very good as his daughter.

Great music too.

AFAIK, Wasabi is getting released in selected stateside cinemas by Columbia Pictures this week. Would it be unreasonable to suspect a subtitled R1 DVD release?

It may get an R1 release but there is nowt wrong with the HK R3.

It's cheap, has decent picture quality and a great DTS soundtrack to boot.

No DVD on Amazon.com and can't find it on Cd-wow. What other Hong Kong suppliers are there?

If you have a Music Zone near you, you might be able to get hold of the R2 Columbia Tristar version for £5. I got one for that price ages ago.
