View Full Version : Monsters Inc
Hi all, can anyone recommend what version of Monsters inc to get? The R2 Collectors Edition or the R1 version?
Thanks
They're all the same aren't they?
i dont know thats why i was asking :)
I think the R2 is going to have a DTS track if that floats your boat.
...or speakers.

Um, can anyone confirm this? I've got the R1 pre-ordered with Future Entertainment, but will of course cancel if the R2 has a DTS track

it's only a rumour AFAIK at the moment but it's a popular one.
It's not a rumour - look for yourselves (http://www.r2-dvd.org/article.jsp?sectionId=3&articleId=4546)
In any case, the R2 2-disc set drops the full-frame version (which should up the bitrate substantially) and adds a DTS soundtrack, so I've gone for that version from Play.
It also comes out over a week earlier than the R1.
Moving to the Region Comparisons forum . . .
. . . and it looks as though I may need to cancel my R1 to get the DTS track :(
I've got the R1 version on order for 10 quid from dvdsoon, and I can't justify paying an extra 7 for a DTS soundtrack.
Found out that the region 2 version is in a digipack, which is disappointing.
Cheers, Paul

Damm, I hate the cardboard stuff :-(
Hmm,, whats more important DTS or the casing? :-/ I want both.....whats the Region 4?
I'm goin for the R1. All my Disney are R1, and would be a shame to spoil the look cause of a digipack, albeit it has DTS.
R1 is also less cash.

You could always buy both swap the casing and tell whoever they sent you the wrong region.

aren't most R2 DTS tracks of very low bitrates??
Who knows, maybe the R1 DD5.1 may sound better and more punchier and alive than the 4% speeded up whiney R2 DTS track?? :|
but then again the PAL will look better than the NTSC, very important with a Pixar movie... um..
I hate all this PAL/NTSC Region crap!!! arghhh!!!! :oh-hum:

Cheers, Paul Is it DEFINITELY a digipack? Past 2-disc Disney DVDs I've bought (such as Atlantis and The Rock) have all been cardboard cases with normal amarays INSIDE them. IMO the R2 packaging looks MUCH nicer than the US version:

Yes, I saw an advert with the digipack folded out in this months DVD Review mag. :brickwall
anyone know how region 4 compares? not bothered about packaging but would rather like DTS and PAL...
Apart from the one article at r2-dvd.org I've seen no where else even mention a DTS soundtrack ... I've cancelled my order of the R1 and I'm not going to re-order it until the R2 is released and I can see for myself if there is a DTS soundtrack or not

R2-DVD.org has an actual review, AS WELL AS screens to back it up, in which they praise the DTS mix. I think it's a pretty safe bet that the R2 release will definitely include a DTS mix.

And advert for I saw for it today in Total Film you can see the dts symbol printed on the DVD as well :)
R1 Canadian is different again from the R1 US!
NO fullframe version (which is no big loss!)
NO sound-effects only audio track (has French track instead)

It was kinda fun in Toy Story 1 and 2, but it's a gimmick that loses its appeal after a while, and it's a waste of space considering it's a full 5.1 track.
...but it does show just how much work goes into creating a soundtrack that is essentially made up from elements plucked from thin air! Certainly not a gimmick to anyone interested in animation and movie sound (which lets face it, a lot of the extra features on Pixar dvds are aimed at).

Granted it is quite informative, but I feel that the space could be better used with a COMMENTARY by the audio designer, Gary Rydstrom, along with some examples thrown in. Audio is only a small part of creating an animated world, and in my opinion to give so much of the disc's space to it is overkill. To give a 5.1 audio track to sound effects, and to include comparatively little rough animation material strikes me a somewhat imbalanced.

Audio is a huge part of any movie, at least 50%. However, I do agree with you that "wasting" space on a sound effects only track is a little too much. If the space is there though, why not?
BIG NEWS FLASH !!!!!
If you plan on buying the region 2 monsters inc tomorrow then be advised that on the box there is no mention of a DTS soundtrack, however if you go into the languages section of the DVD then DTS can be selected.
Seems like disney forgot to put DTS on the box
Just thought I'd let you all know

And it was worth the wait for the R2 got it this morning and watched about the first 10 mins and the dts soundtrack is easily reference quality

It's people like you that dvd companies love. You spend an extra £5 on a disc just because it has an extra DTS soundtrack (with minimal differences to the DD) and don't think anything of it! Who has the last laugh?
I guess I may sound tight but when I buy Monsters Inc. (probably R4). and I put it on the shelf next to the other 450 odd dvds in my collection I will be able to smile to myself with the knowledge that I got the best disc for the cheapest price. ;)

Sorry that you seem to have taken that remark personally and have seen the need to have a dig at me , for your info I usually go for the cheapest option but this time I'd thought I'd go for the version that had a dts soundtrack , as I have a system capable of outputting a dts signal I thought why not make us of it (like a few other people on the boards I might add)
I didn't take it personally - don't worry. :) I certainly wasn't having a go at you either. I just hate the way Britain gets screwed pricing wise for everything. I have a system that can play DTS too (Denon A1SR amp & A1 DVD, 4 B&W CDM9T's) but apart from a few discs I can only tell a small amount of difference between DD & DTS (granted they are usually louder) so didn't want people to rush out and buy a disc that they could get a far bit cheaper elsewhere.
I hope I am forgiven?

Has anyone been able to confirm that the R2 version has *exactly* the same extras as the R1 version (and, for that matter, the same type of menus, etc).
At the moment I'm hedging towards the UK version (from HMV - with the car!!) but so many UK discs have extras that get dropped, or are in subtle ways inferior, and this doesn't always get picked up by the flawed "compare lists" approach of Rewind.

Except for minor diff. R2 dun have games and R1 dun have a multi language reel features.
See here (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=115073) for how to get a cheap version of the R2 collecters edition of Monsters Inc at 12.99

WOtt !!!??1111!!!!
For those of you who appreciate decent packaging and were put off the R2 because it came wrapped in a recycled birthday card - fear not.
After only a week, the 2 disc R2 is now in a lovely Amaray. Just like plenty of releases before it - Silence of the Lambs, The Usual Suspects, Terminator, Unbreakable - the digipack has just been temporary. Not ideal, especially for those with it already, but there you go.

that might be the reason why there were hardly any copies of the 2 disc set in my area. I think i got the last one in HMV.
How many easter eggs does it feature?
So witch version has the "Mikes New Car" on it
I've just ordered the R2 2-disc set from CD-WOW for £15 - but which version is it, as it says release is 30/09/02.
get R4, cheaper and has DTS.
Would do, but I'm stuck with an R2 only player until at least Xmas. :(
Are you sure about the DTS on R4? I can't find any confirmation of it yet.

why not just wait until r2/r4 versions actually EXIST before ordering it?
The Australian (R4) version of Empire magazine mentions the "mikes new car" extra in the review, unless they were just using a R1 copy for review purposes.
Welcome to the forums trancer20
When I asked yesterday, Ezy was listing Audio as TBC.
And I don't want to wait for it to be released because P&P is cheaper on pre-order (@Ezy which is where I buy my R4s)

Had an absolutely crap day at work, so decided to watch this for a few laughs - this is still absolutely stunning work from Pixar. Wonderful in all aspects.

That must be a record thread resurrection ;)
