Nice picture, reasonable sound, cool menus. But most of all a classic film. First time i`ve ever seen it in widescreen, and very cool.Only one question: the region 2 is 2.35:1, and the region 1 is advertised as being 1.85:1.( at play.com ) Strange that.
Spoony.
What are the documentaries like?

Yuck! I think it's dreadful packaging. My copy arrived from Amazon this morning, and it looks as if it must have been squashed in transit. Grrrrrr, bloody cardboard slipcases.... :(
How come 'Alfie' gets an Amaray case, but 'Italian Job' doesn't?

Does it feature subtitles to the Italian spoken in the traffic control centre, which the version I taped off the TV years ago had, but a Paramount video version did not have?

I just wonder how much encoding space was wasted on the subtitles. They have even included arabic.

-All the R1 sites have that info, and dvdrewind as well.I cannot believe it is true, but if so,the R2 version is the only one to buy.
One good point is the commentary is subtitled in English.
I much prefer the choice of watching the original track with the commentary subtitled if only more films did this.
The documentary is good, but in parts I prefer the C4 one on the VHS SE as this had more on the driving stunts and interviews with the French driving stunt team.
Got it and watched it this morning (Mon), I like the moving menus with the mini's it's class. Good picture and sound and loads of excellent extras.:rocker:
Guys

Subtitle tracks take up very little space compared with video and audio-based material. And it's hardly "wasted" if it makes the disc much more exportable - and encourages people in other countries to include English subtitles on their releases as a result!

The film should definitely be 2.35:1 - and I'd instinctively favour the UK edition, if only because the film isn't anything like as highly regarded anywhere else.

I think Hollywood's planned remake starring Mark Wahlberg illustrates this point quite effectively. Ain't dey got no respect?

Arabic subtititles ain't wasted space if Arabic is your 1st language.
With all the fuss over bi-lingual Canadian covers I hope we never get as colloquial as the USA!

Yes that section is subtitled.
I believe I've noticed a very minor problem with the disk. The commentary track seems to be out of sync with the movie at certain points. It's difficult to tell if this sync problem is occuring throughout the entire commentary, but at two points, Matthew Field sounds like he is describing what he is seeing a few seconds before we see it.
1. When the gang are being introduced around the table, Matthew Field points out the presence of Robert Powell and Michael Caine's brother Stanley a few seconds before they are actually shown.
2. When the heist is taking place, Matthew Field points out the moment where a member of the gang fell from the top of a Land Rover and broke his toe. A few seconds later we see the incident.
It's a very minor problem, but on DVD Reviewer someone is reporting not being able to play the disc on a Phillips 633 or a Toshiba 3107.
This is the movie I've been MOST waiting for since I bought a DVD player 2 years ago so I'm well chuffed. I wasn't sure about the packaging when I got it. I would have prefered a keep case, but at least it's not a WB snapper.
I just watched the 3 part documentary and was fantastic and well edited together. The menus were ubercool as well
Well done to Paramount.

So is Wahlberg now going to only star in remakes? He's also done "the truth about Charlie" which apparently is a remake of a Cary Grant film Charade :(
Hope everyone's looking forward to the remake of the godfather starring Vin Diesel, Ed Norton and Mark Wahlberg
I could have sworn that last time I watched it, a car speeding down the mountain caused the coach to swerve off the road, but when I watched it recently it just swerves off on a corner
Did anyone else find this or am I just going mad?
you're going mad....
(unless I am too! I'm pretty sure no car is involved).

I have to agree. Why couldn't they put it in a plastic keep case?

Too right  I mean I understand the digi-pack being used for multi-disc releases (like BTTF) to reduce space and cost, but come on, the Italian Job only has one disc, the cardboard box is flimsy and the paper inserts is just 1 sheet of chapter lists and a publicity catalogue.
I thought the same thing when I opened the Amazon packaging. Reminded me of the cheapskate effort made for the Stargate SE last year, and makes me wonder how long it'll take for the disc to be reissued in an Amaray case. No doubt we'll be told the current cheapo case was a limited edition and we should be honored to have it in our collections!
well, I usually love funky packaging, like gatefolds, digipacks, etc, but this time round it is indeed a suckfest.

Isn't the R4 (released some weeks ago supposedly) exactly the same as the R2, only cheaper?

Anyone else a bit disappointed that the stuff from the documentary was all repeated in the commentary, and not much new stuff was talked about. I though it was funny the way matthew field seemed to always be prompting the producer for information, and then when the producer couldn`t remember Matthew had to tell us instead. I think just Matthew would have been better off on his own. Also a shame that Michael Caine couldn`t be interviewed really.
Chris
this title doesn't work on Philips DVD 623.
Majorly annoyed about this.
appears to also have a problem on a couple of other players.
What's the score when things like this happen?
do they ever get sorted, or is it just tough luck?

I thought there was supposed to be an alternative ending on this disc?
Didn't it say in the documentary that a few endings were considered, but none were filmed other than the original? It was meant to leave things open for a sequel, but given the movies lack of popularity in the US on release, guess Paramount weren't going to stump up the cash to make it.:(
Could make a sequel now with the cast as old men driving Rover 75's! ;)
Update on my earlier post about not working on Philips DVD623.
Mark from Paramount UK (Production Co-Ordinator for Italian Job DVD) called me back.
Philips have said it's a firmware issue, and are sending information to Paramount so they can correct the problem and re-author the DVD.
Re-authored DVD may not have any different packaging, so it might be difficult to tell from the box on the shelf. However, if you buy the DVD and it doesn't work, Mark plans to have a stock of the re-authored discs to exchange with customers reporting this problem.
So far they're only aware of it being a problem with the Philips DVD player.
If you have the same problem then you might want to let Mark Upton at Paramount know on 020 7478 6866. (Especially if it's not just a Philips DVD that it doesn't work on)
:mad:Arrrg! I think I am going to have to get this now:)
