Allow me to gloat for a while as this is the first time we've been top since 1993:clap:

Do you think our early season form can continue? I hope so, but last season we only lost 1 out of the first 8 and then a couple of injuries later it all went 'tits up' and we were back into the familar relegation battle territory.

Although I do think we have a much stronger side this time around and HR has made some astute buys/loans this summer - Merson, Taylor, Fox, Festa, Hislop, Pericard and De Zueew plus Burchill's return to fitness after 11 month's out is also a welcome boost.

Certainly think you will improve on last year. Harry has made some great buys and a Playoff place is a realistic shot.

My Dad has supported Pompey all his life and at 72 is still a season ticket holder. I go to some games with him so have always had a soft spot for them.

Would love to see them in the Premiership.

They've a very good chance if u ask me (even top 2!) I thought Derby would go straight back, but they look shaky and they're losing players. Ipswich should go up, but they may be in trouble if they lose some players. Wolves are a nearly team, and I'm sure they will be again this season. Pompey will never have a better chance. And let's hope Norwich go up too!

It's a long season but a great start will breed confidence. Pompey promised a lot last season and it looks like it's starting to pay off. Good support as well. If Merson stays fit I think you're in with a good chance.

After taking a risk and spending money on players it would be nice to see Pompey rewarded with promotion.Harry's built a experianced squad who hopefully can cope with the pressure of being top.

How is Uncle Festa playing so far?

By all accounts, very well. We haven't conceded since he started playing and he's also been unlucky not to score.

Shaping up as a useful signing:clap:

It's a tough league, especially this year but Pompey defiantly have a chance.

Harry is very experienced and has got an even more experienced assistant in Jim Smith.

Harry has bought well, and the players he has got from W Ham were not quite Premiership quality but will be good Division 1 players. Merson was a great bit of business and will add that extra bit of class needed.

I hope you go up.

Paul Merson will do a great job for Portsmouth as he got the flair and skills to open up defence and make Portsmouth look good.

Just keep an eye on him and make sure you are ready to take him off after 70 minutes if he ran out of stamina or energy.

Also Paul Merson do very well for Villa, but he didn't deliver the goods against Liverpool, Manchester United or Arsenal. He will be fine for Portsmouth as there will be less quality in division 1.

I think Wolves and Portsmouth will go up

Much as I'd like to see that I don't see us lasting the pace, particularly after last night's ***** poor performance against Sheff Weds.

Portsmouth and Ipswich will go up automatically, then ony one from Wolves, Norwich, Leicester, Derby, Coventry and Preston for the play-offs.

So the fact that Liverpool were the most successful team in English football, had no influence in your decision to support them :p

What part of Liverpool where your Mothers family from?

It's not all b(*&^%ks, local teams need local support and cash to survive. Do you go and watch Liverpool? Could you go and watch a local side and support them with your own cash? (Not necessarily a football league side). Football will die without grassroots support. If everyone just supported the teams who win things the game will die.

As a Southampton supporter, it's quite a painful sight seeing Pompey top of the First Division but Redknapp's obviously brought in some decent players and they're playing good football. It's perhaps too soon to say, "we're definitely going up" but I agree you certainly have the makings of title contenders.

Not sure how I'd feel if you did, the rivalry between Saints and Pompey is probably one of the most intense, if rarely mentioned, in the country, but it would certainly be great to play your lot again and avenge the home defeat from fourteen years ago!

In the mean time you'll have to make do with a south coast derby against the Seagulls on Saturday! ;) :)

I was there for that one:clap: in the home end behind the goal, I went over with a few mates from the darts team I played for who were all Soton fans.

Although our last meeting at The Dell was in the cup and we went down 3-0 that day (must have been bad luck:p )

Facts are you have a huge chip on you shoulder about Manchester, by putting NOT Manchester on your title. So you support one northern giant, and not another northern giant, what would you know about the rivalary between two northern cities :norty:

So enlighten me. Do you go to football games and pay cash or do you support Liverpool from afar? Also you may find it obvious but when I ask the kids around here why they wear Man Utd shirts it's because they appear on the TV a lot. It never occurs to them that they could go and watch a game for real. Lots of the don't even know that Reading exist because they're not a premiership team.

I would say play-offs probably for Pompey. I was at the Palace - Pompey game a couple of weeks ago (  ) and wasn't that impressed - they only won due to the Palace defence falling apart for 5 minutes.

I would also be quite surprised if Merson managed to stay fit for the whole season and i don't think Pompey would be as good without him.

Don't ask :(

He seems to have brought his Birmingham tactics to Palace with him. He's made some good signings but I don't think he has very good motivational skills and seems to only like a certain style of play. We are desperately in need of some creativity in midfield (a player like Merson would have been good) but I don't think Francis can see it

He's looking good and I wouldn't be suprised to see him called up soon.

He's been knocking them in for the reserves and scored the winner against Grimsby a few weeks ago after coming on as sub (shot from the edge of the penalty area). Sorry to rain on your parade after an excellent start but I think they might just eek it into the playoffs come May. Still very early days and when those cold winters start coming, injuries get picked up and some of the older fellas start to get knackered, that will be the true test. The first division is tough.

They will probably still finish higher then Palace though (bottom half if Francis doesnt bugger off soon).:( Wayne Routledge is the only thing that cheers me up about Palace at the moment, but I bet we will sell him for a tiny amount of his worth to a Premiership club (ala Wright, Morrison etc etc.

I agree with you Tob, it will be hard, and contrary to popular belief we don't have a lot of strength in depth, decent size squad, but a lot are youth players (nor have we spent much), and a few injuries could stuff us (we had a few out today, and didn't play that well, but it's a good sign that we still won).

After the last four or five seasons I'd settle for a play-off place, but I'm going to enjoy it while we're doing well.

That's what could stuff you up, as although you have 4 games in hand you need to win them all just to catch 3rd place atm, which put's added pressure on the players, plus you'll end up playing a lot of games in a short space of time.

Although saying that, I think that you'll be up there at the end (hope so anyway as I have Ipswich in one of my accumalators and the other 3 are doing the business atm;)).

Also, I can't believe that you've got to play in the 2nd round of the Worthington Cup, when all the other sides in Europe got a bye - that night could have been used for one of your postponed games.

Thats right we are playing Brighton at home this week which I am not to happy about. I suppose its because we are in the first division side and the fact that had we got a bye into the next round then there would be an uneven amount of teams left. But it's still not right. Personally I hope we loose in Europe then perhaps we can get back concentrating on the league and can play some of those games in hand.

But good luck to Pompey, if you can recover from the set back and keep playing like you have started the season then I think you stand a great chance of going up.

Because he can't last a full game in the Premiership and he played best for us when we played 3-5-2 when we went to 4-4-2 he was ineffective wide right and not solid enough to play centre mid upfront we have Angel and Vassell.

Ironicaly the last two games we have gone back to 3-5-2 we have missed his creativity.

But above all the reason he was let go was because he was on £20-25 grand a week and we had to trim the wage bill.We have around 90,000 grands worth of wages going out a week to players not getting in the team:shocker: Merson was wanted we let him go the other;s unfortuantly i.e Dublin,Kachloul we cant get rid of and are on fairly long contract's

Work-horse has beens that should have been recruited as Squad Members, but unfortunately are likely to become the main stay of our squad selection over the coming months.

I must admit that I couldn't believe it when Pompey signed him as a) I was suprised Villa let him go on a free and b) that another Premiership club didn't go for him as he's still younger than some plying their trade there and could have done a good job for the like's of Charlton or Soton.

His impact at Pompey is not just restricted to the match on Saturday, he's having a great influence on the younger players on the training pitch and in the dressing room as well.

Back to form today, with a 3-2 win at (unbeaten at home) Rotherham. Bit lucky getting a penalty for the 3rd goal apparently, but the ref evened it up with one for Rotherham i the 2nd half.

Not quite;)

But our 100% home record is over now, but by all accounts 1-1 was a fair result and all credit to Coventry for attacking and playing for a win rather than shutting up shop.

We were as good as I've seen us all season. Pompey certainly do have a cutting edge, but that seems to be due to Merson. Without him, you'd look very normal!

If he gets injured, your stuffed. Very much a one man team!

I think he could do a good job for us, plus we are light in midfield if we get any injuries/suspensions.

Other good news is the fact Vincent Pericard wants to stay at Pompey (our current top scorer) - which is a bit of a suprise as we only have him on loan for the season from Juventus and he played for them in the Champions League last season.

I don't think they have - most signings have been on free's, there's been more players out than in, and in some cases wages have been saved as well - according to this mornings paper Middlesbrough are still picking up 2/3 of Festa's pay for example.

The chairman (Milan Mandaric) is also happy to bankroll the club as he wants promotion and a new 36,000 seater stadium is in the offing (gates are currently at our 18,000 capacity).

Thing is both Stone and Merson are big wage earners(£20k+ a week each) ,past there best IMO and there contracts are up at the end of the season.

Taylor is trying to clear the ''oldies ''out to blood in the youth.Well the oldies on high wages anyway.

I have to say though I am suprised Taylor didnt try Stone out in midfield especially as of late we have been light weight there. Where are you playing stone centre mid or right mid ?

I saw M. Taylors goal class  We were intrested in him a while a go but we never made a bid also we have Barry and Samual on the left.He was very good for Luton and Harry was very wise to pick him up IMO

Apparently, Stone was played as a right wing-back tonight, with Taylor on the left and Quashie/Diabete in central midfield with Merson behind the front two (we play 3 at the back).

Yes, it was a good bit of business signing Matty Taylor (£400,000 I think), a couple of Premier League clubs were interested in him, but he said he'd prefer to play first team footnball with us, rather than sit on the bench/in hte reserves of a Premiership side - it's looking like a good move for him (and us) as he'll end up in the Premier League with or without us after the performances he's been putting in, as I can't see us hanging on to him for long if we don't go up (same goes for Gary O'Neill and possibly Nigel Quashie as well).

I think Paul Merson took a pay cut to sign for Pompey, I remember something about him accepting half the wages he was on at Villa, as all he wanted was to play first team football.

I think we'd have to buy two or three more players at least, but we've already got a few players used to playing in the Premiership plus a management team that know whats needed to stay up - and I think the Chairman will be happy to invest a bit more as he wants Pompey at the top and apparantly we're showing a £4m profit on transfers in the last year atm.

Thats not to say it won't be hard, and 4th from bottom (if we get there) will do;)

Nothing to do with deserving it. If that were the case there are quite a few Div 1 teams that would apply to or at least their long sufferng fans do :) . We NEED it as we require the Premiership money to survive our debt mountain. Actually if we survive to the end of the season and get promoted then we will DESERVE it. The fact that we are pushing for promotion is very creditable given our problems and the normal history of teams that get relegated. If we have the promise of Premiership football it may give us breathing space with the creditors until the seasons end.

pompeyfan
03-11-2002, 20:13
It is a creditable position seeing you have a lot of money worries, although a lot of Div 1 clubs have more, as they don't have the Premier League umbrella cash that relegated clubs get, plus they seem to get more Sky coverage (and hence more TV money) than existing D1 clubs - Leicester have been on a couple of times already, Pompey have yet to have a sniff of a live TV match and aren't scheduled this side of Christmas:mad:

We''re only OK atm as most of our signings have been free's, deals have been struck on wages (for example Middlesbrough are still paying 2/3 of Festa's pay), we are showing a profit in the transfer market of £4m in the current year and our Chairman has said he'll make up the TV cash shortfall personnally as he wants promotion.

pompeyfan

A fair few as it happens:(

Lee Bradbury played 17 times, Mark Burchill 5 (both ended up with Cruciate Ligament injuries that ended their seasons), Lee Mills and Rowan Vine played 3 each and Leonardo Biagini (an Argentine we had on loan) 6 times, Kevin Harper may have played a few up front as well, although we had Prosinecki last season who played just behind the front line, so Crouch may have been on his own up front for some games.

0-0 at Reading today.

A good result for us by all accounts, and the way Reaqding played today it would have been a good result even if we'd have been at full strength.

I think we're going to have to make some signings soon if we want to go up - only 12 players were fit to train this week, and we're down to two strikers, one of whom is still getting back to full fitness after a year out.

Bick
08-12-2002, 13:52
Yep, we (Reading) had 11 shots on goal to Pompeys 3, so although I'm reasonably happy with the draw (I think both teams were), if anyone deserved to win it I'd say it was us.

BTW: you look a lot better when you've got the ball, than when the opposition has it from what I've seen, and it seemed to be because Merson plays when you have it and just shouts at everyone when you don't.

pompeyfan
08-12-2002, 16:55
I think that when Merson's playing we like to put everything through him (same with Prosinecki last season), although I think we proved at Wednesday that we can play without him if we need to as he went of injured after 23 minutes.

I agree with you about the result, and from the radio commentary and the highlight's, if anyone deserved to win it was you - even if we had, had a full strength side out, a draw would have been a good result as you're on a roll atm.

The way thinks are going, we really need to sign a few players quickly if we want to maintain our position, as we have no strength in depth:( Luckily we're 13 points ahead of 3rd, so do have a bit of a cushion.

Damn and bugger it:mad:

There's a rumour going around that Arsenal want Matty Taylor (left-back/left-midfield) whom we signed from Luton in the summer.

Portsmouth are denying it at present, and I really hope this rumour is unfounded as selling him could seriously damage our promotion push - he's been responsible for over 25% of the goals we've scored this season, and is a future England international (U21 atm). He's probably been a more influential signing than Merson to be honest.

He's very good, probably more importent to us atm than Merson. he gets man of the match a lot of the time. A least four Premier clubs were interested in him in the summer, but he opted for Portsmouth as he said he'd rather play first team football in Div 1 than reserve/sit on the bench for a Premier side.

Hope fully I will be able to get to that fixture if and when it happens ... I've got friends in Havant ... should be a good weekend... but knowing my luck bloody Sky will change it to a Monday night match

1-1 at home to Ipswich today, and I think we can be happier with the result than Ispwich. We had a few chances, but Ipswich had more and only poor finishing let them down.

Definately our bogey team - only one win against them in the last 9 attempts, and that was at Portman Rd the last time Ipswich went up.

Good news on the ground.

It's been announced by the chairmam Milan Mandaric that we're staying at Fratton Park and it's going to be re-developed with the pitch being turned through 90 degrees, 3 new stands and the capacity increasing from 19,000 to 35,000:clap:

Latest transfer speculation:

Portsmouth want Shefki Kuqi (sp?:)) from Sheff Weds and are prepared to offer £600,000 + either Mark Burchill or Lee Bradbury.

I'm not exactly overjoyed at the prospect of losing Burchill as I rate him highly:(

You must love Mandaric, a chairman who is not affriad to put his money where his mouth is. In a way i'd like to see u go up just because he deserves it. (Plus i think its pretty much guaranteed;) ) The players and fans seem to respect him alot as well.

You're starting to get a nice premership team together as well, Merson, Stone, Todorov can all do the business at top level.

Are you keeping the guy on loan from Juve?

Milan is certainly well liked - he's been known to sit in the home end during matches, and has been into pubs where pompey fans have been and put money behind the bar for drinks:clap:

It was also good to see Pericard come on as a sub today as we've missed him badly up front.

More wheeling and dealing by Harry?

PORTSMOUTH are believed to have settled on a deal to sign powerful Nigerian striker Yakubu Aiyegbeni on loan until the end of the season.
Aiyegbeni had been given the green light by Maccabi Haifa to secure a move away from Israel and his agent Pini Zahavi had been brokering his switch.

First Division table-toppers Portsmouth have teed up a deal which will see Maccabi pocket £300,000 if Aiyegbeni stays until the campaign's conclusion.

Pompey will then have the option to sign the African marksman on a permanent basis for a fee of £4.2 million, providing they clinch promotion to The Premiership.

The main stumbling block is whether Aiyegbeni will be granted a work permit as the 20-year-old's move to Derby County last summer collapsed because he had not earned enough international caps.

Aiyegbeni has subsequently established himself in the Nigerian team and has his fingers crossed he will be able to seal his dream move to England.

"I have had patience," said Aiyegbeni. "I would have played for Derby at the start of the season if I did not have problems with my work permit.

"But I have enjoyed a wonderful time with Maccabi Haifa in the Champions League and therefore I will not come to England as an unknown player.

"I will never forget Haifa because it is thanks to them that I have fulfilled my dream."

The imposing hit-man netted five goals in the Champions League this season and has already spurned moves to Bayer Leverkusen and PSV Eindhoven.

Pompey's capture of Aiyegbeni is a considerable coup as the hot shot is one of football's rising talents and he is certain to play a prominent role in their quest for promotion.

Quite surprised Mark Burchill has gone on loan to Dundee (and taken a major cut in wages apparently).

He's a decent striker and will do a job at Dens Park. Not the player he was hyped up to be during his time with Glasgow Celtic but certainly knows where the goal is.

I pretty much thought we'd get turned over anything between 0-3 and 0-6 before the game. We've got horrendous injury problems and suspensions. Although saying that, the financial power of Pompey is pretty much unmatchable by anyone in the division. It's Man City and Fulham all over again. Although Harry Redknapp deserves a huge amount of credit for Pompey's imminent promotion, the whole situation proves you can buy your way out of the division if you have the backing. Shame Millwall don't.

I don't where the rumour comes from that Pompey have money and have spent a lot.

More players have left portsmouth than we've signed (it's soemothing like 13 in, 14/15 out), most of the signings have been on loan or free transfers, and Harry is currently around two-and-a-half million up on transfer fees in the last 12 month's - most amount spent on one player was Toderov at £750,000, and deals have been domne on wages, with signing's either taking pay cuts or like in the case of Festa, the previous club still picking up part of the wage.

3-2 win over Norwich tonight:D, and Norwich can feel really hard done by not getting anything out of the game, as they were the better side for most of it.

Portsmouth didn't really start playing till the last 20 mins and although we took the lead twice through a couple of good goals (the first one was a bit close though;)), it was against the run of play and Norwich replied quickly with a couple of good'uns themselves - the first within 13 seconds:eek:

Very good 0-4 win away to Coventry tonight, with goals from Caldwell (og), Stone, Harper and Merson. What made it even better was the fact we were missing key players with Taylor, Primus and Quashie out and De Zeeuw limping off in the 1st half, and before the match I'd have taken a draw.

With 8 games left, I think either 3 more wins or 2 wins and 2 draws should be enough to see us up, as that'll give us 91 or 90 points respectively.

Stone has 4 (2 in the last 2 matches).

It's been good this season as the goals have been spread througout the team, and there hasn't been any reliance on just one or two to get them (IIRC we've had around 14 or so different goal scorers this season).
