After having the life changing experience of witnessing one of the greatest live acts ever on Saturday night, I'm delighted to see the touring again in October
Edinburgh Queens Hall (October 18)
Sheffield Leadmill (19)
Nottingham Rock City (21)
Manchester University (22)
Brighton Concorde 2 (23)
Northampton Roadmenders (25)
Liverpool University (26)
London Shepherds Bush Empire (27)
Once again i can't recomened these shows highly enough.

I too saw them at the Leeds festival and it has to be one of the most amazing things i've ever seen!! I went from laughing my head off to sheer, life-enhancing wonderment in the space of an hour!
As for the guy dressed as a tree climbing the tent - well that was just the icing on the cake! :notworthy
It's the Leadmill for me :rocker:

Me too. I would have joined them and travelled the world with just my Polyphonic friends and my white gown, at peace with the world at last.
Listened to the album, 'Beginning stages of' today. Great album. Very Waco 'tho.;) :)

The album is brilliant.
Brilliant.
I say again: it is BRILLIANT.
Simple, heartwarming, strange, beautiful - straight into the top three records of the year, without question.
And I'm definitely going to the Shepherds Bush gig!

Anyone know if the album is getting a "official" UK release as I can only see it available on import. (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000655Z6/qid=1030565524/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2_2/026-2989491-4541231) :(
Very interested to hear these guys...

It's getting a UK release soon, and I think there is a kind of 'rejigged' album in the works too. I bought mine on import through Amazon and it only took them about a week to get it.

No really, how long is track 10? I only listened to it an a crappy little cd-system that didn't have a time display but it must have went on for about 20 minutes. I can see it being totally ad-libbed every performance 'cos they can't remember exactly how it went.... Great though. Kinda hypnotic after a while. Perfect for some preaching sermons.

The last track is about 35 minutes long. It's not the most played track on my copy of the album
The official UK release is at the end of September. I got mine on import from Rough Trade for about £12.99 which i believe is cheaper than Amazon.

Just read the review on allmusic.com and I'm intrigued.
Are they completely unique or do they sound similar to anything else?
Barney_Tabasco

They sound like a cross between The Flaming Lips, The Beach Boys, Wicker Man soundtrack and some hippy dippy 60's nutters, but amazingly, IT WORKS!!
Go to Amazon.com as they have 2 tracks that you can download for free!

Imagine Brian Willson in his prime joining the Flamming lips and bringing along an orchestra and choir.
There's a single called 'Soldier Girl' recently released that's on the Radio 6 playlist. Ask nicely and they may play it. (Not that many people listen to digital radio yet so there very accomidating!:) )

Bought the album from Amazon on import a few weeks ago after seeing them at T In The Park.Cost me a few bob.It is without doubt one of the most amazingly innovative albums that i've heard in a long time. It's definitely a real contender for album of the year IMO.

As well as the fantastic Section Two, 'Sun'
Ba dada ba da
Also for anyone having problems finding the mp3's:
ftp: zaireeka.mit.edu
ID & password: "flaminglips"
That should tide you over until the end of the month.:)
I think track 2 (It's the sun) is one of the most amazing things I've ever heard. Goosebumps every time I hear it, it gets better on each listen.
If you go see them live expect to see/hear:
king
suitcase calling
best part of the night
fields glide without motion
diamonds
2000 places
sun reprise
and fireworks, though apparantley they only occasionally perform this one.
all not on 'tbs' and covers of:
ride captain ride
five years

After all the hype you guys have been giving this LP I had a quick listen and first impressions are - nothing that hasn't been done better before, 5 years ago, by the likes of Grandaddy, Mercury Rev and t'Lips.
However I will certainly be trying again as I have too much respect for the taste of the people acclaiming this record.

Section Ten, (A Long Day) was essentially the 'exit music' at the end of any of their early gigs. Imagine if anyone stood around expecting another encore though.:D

The only reason I'm going is 'cos they've got a man in a tree suit.
Apparently they play music as well.
i cant decide on these ppl. i really want to like them because theres 5 billion of em and theyre strange, but i'm always left with a feeling of oh after each "song".
i dunno, maybe theyll grow on me. fungustastic
I like the song played heavily on MTV2. It's the hanging around and sounds like a fusion of The Flaming Lips,Brian Wilson,Neil Young and They might be giants.
They reminded me too of a religious cult.
I wonder if my local MVC will have a copy?
The video for Hanging Around was directed by Jarvis Cocker, and will be released as a single next monday (21st). The chorus always makes me think of the Simpsons 'Springfield Files' episode were they're all singing 'Good Morning Starshine'. I'm sure I can here Chewie and Spock in the background of 'Section 7'.:D

Well had a couple of listens and have to say some of the songs are fantastic e.g 1-3 and 9. The middle few seem to lack that uplifting thing that the others have - maybe they'll grow on me.
The main body of the cd could have been longer and what is track 10 about - does it grow on you or is it just 30+ mins of mindless noodlings.
Overall verdict - "I believe"
PS - where can I get my white cassock? :dork:
I just can't get away with track 10.
The rest is superb. A real grower too, as you become more familiar with the tracks.

Rumour has it, you can buy the robes at the gig for about £30.

Yes, Ed, don't listen to MARKMAN, that was him on the t-shirt stand. That beards coming on a treat.
I said 'Good Times' to him and he gave him a free sticker and badge...then i gave HIM a punch in the gob.
I 'hat hat hat' too but it looks quite good when worn with a white robe. By the way, if you stayed afterwards, did you see MARKMAN dancing all night up on the stage - when the Beach Boys came on he went ape!
Surprised you and your cronies were underwhelmed. I went with quite a gang of folk who'd not seen them before and they were blown away! They were sceptical at first, but by the midway point they were pointing to the stars and praying for Jebus to come and carry them off on a cloud of creamcheese.
It was all hugely uplifting and one mate went so far as to shake my hand to thank me for introducing him to them.
And Ed, that would make her a bigamist as she is already married to ME baby ME. Oh and the girl next to her is also married to me (erm, i think that makes me a bigamist then).

I had very high expectations so it didn't help that the people around me were tw@s and that the couple that I went with were sceptical. I hate going to gigs where that happens - I guess I feel some sort of responsibility or something.
Don't get me wrong I thought it was excellent, especially lead singer, horn bloke and "Pocahontas" (who was just sooooo cute).
I didn't get to see MARKMAN afterwards as my "friends" have "issues" which meant they had to leave. :oh-hum:

The single that's out this week has the Bowie Cover (5 years) on it. Instantly making it a must buy!
5 years is the most underappreciated david bowie track in my opinion
Wow, wow, wow.... all I can say is WOW.
Last nights gig at Shepherds Bush empire was truly amazing. I knew they would perform other tracks not on 'tbs' such as King, Suitcase calling, Best part of the night, Fields glide without motion, Diamonds, 2000 places and covers of Ride captain ride and Five years but I hadn't anticipated a 1 hr 45 minute set.
The setlist ran in album order, sections one to nine. Even though few of the crowd knew the songs played afterwards, such is the nature of the Sprees music that everyone was able to sing along to their mantra.
"You gotta be good. You gotta be strong. You gotta be 2000 places at once."
Oh and a 3 minute harp Solo.:notworthy I swear they could have started singing 'Jingle Bells' and we all would have went wild. The night was being filmed, so here's hoping it sees a dvd release in the future.

Yep, he dj'd before hand with Steve Mackey and both then guested for 'Hanging Around' and 'Soldier Girl'. More shockingly was that Anthony Edwards plays bass (i think) in the Spree.:D

I was at the Sheperds Bush gig too and it was extraordinary - the atmosphere was so full of - and I'm going to sound like the hippy I can never be now - joy. It was so much fun, the band looked like they were having the best time, Jarvis and Steve from Pulp were fully cassocked and singing along... amazing.
The album's been played to death in our house, so for them to shoot through it start to finish (including Tim DeLaughter having a 10 second acapella stab at Section 10  ) was surprising, but not as surprising as the fact that they have another album's worth of material that is just as good. and that cover of Five Years - wow. One of the gigs of the year, without doubt.
I've uploaded some pics of Sunday nights gig (with big thanks to Monkeybird for supply) to my web space (http://www.mrm0by.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/index.html). I won't post them here as there 'way to big'. The links below should auto-size them though.
Polyphonic One (http://www.mrm0by.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Polyphonic%20010.jpg) Tell me that's not Dr Greene on guitar!
Polyphonic Two (http://www.mrm0by.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Polyphonic%20006.jpg) Jarvis fails to get in the swing of it

Great photos - the second, with stone-faced Jarv, is hilarious. 13th aunt took great delight in giving all the band nicknames, ie Jesus Spree, Shaggy Spree, Philip Seymour Hoffman Spree. She, like me, wants to run away from home and join the Polyphonic Spree.

I was really into the flaming lips album, but after hearing the begining stages it has been made utterly redudant, listened to it early and it just sounded empty and lifeless in comparison.
Track 10 just blows me away! Is there a finer track for inducing sleep?

I actually quite like track 10. I always, well almost always let it play right through, though maybe turn it town a little.
should i buy this album?
as i've said, i've been left with a feeling of oh from what i've heard so far but can this many people be wrong? are the releases a reflection of the album or are there hidden charms i've yet to find?

Have you heard the singles then shufts? If you don't like them then it's possible you won't like the rest of the album.
Personally it was a big grower. Initially about half the tracks left me with that "oh" feeling. Now I love them all - I often find myself dancing up and down in a white bedsheet pretending I'm in the 'Spree, married to the little dark haired cutie. :norty:
heard a couple. its not that i dont like them as such its something that i cant quite put my finger on. now, the nosey cow in me wants to know what all the fuss is about.

Tim DeLaughter was also on London 94.9FM (or whatever its called) last night. An hour of his favourite records and some chat.
Comes across as such an incredibly sincere (and funny) individual. Was nice to hear some facts from the horse's mouth as all the interviews I have read go along the same lines ... 25 members ... white robes ... Hair meets Flaming Lips ... theremin ... David Koresh.
Knew the Beginning Stages was old, but he said that it is actually two and a half years old and was only recorded as a demo that they could hawk around to promoters. They then started selling it out of Good Records and some limeys picked up on it and it all blew up over here. Not much going on for them outside Texas in the States though.
And they're going back into the studio imminently to do a proper album

Up from the depths:
The Spree will be playing on the NME Awards tour in Jan / Feb with the Datsuns, The Thrills and Interpol.
Glasgow Barrowlands (Jan 26)
Newcastle Northumbria University (27)
Birmingham Academy (28)
Sheffield Foundry (30)
Liverpool University (31)
Manchester Academy (February 1)
Leeds Metropolitan University (3)
Nottingham Rock City (4)
Norwich UEA (5)
Portsmouth Pyramid (7)
Cardiff University (8)
London Astoria (9)
A good chance for those of you who didn't catch them the last time round. The Datsuns seem to be headlining with the Polyphonic Spree on before them.
Full details here: http://www.nme.com/news/103515.htm
I've also heard that they are gonna play at Wembley Arena on Jan 25th with the Flaming Lips and Supergrass. This ain't 100% confirmed yet though, however, the news is from their trombone player.

Mark and Lard hinted that the Spree would be on their show in the next couple of weeks.
Just got back from the NME gig in Newcastle. The Spree rocked again and there was such a good atmosphere in the crowd. It was raucous compared to the last time I saw them in Edinburgh.
The other bands were OK, but I think the Spree made a lot of converts of folk that went to see The Datsuns.
Hopefully I've just booked my tickets for the London Forum "happening" gig on the 10th. Should be good!

There was a few reason's for going to Manchester.
1: Couldn't make it last night.
2: I wanted to drink lots of beer (and the Leeds gig was on a work night.)
3: A friend as just bought a city center flat in Manchester and it would be foolish not to abuse the situation.

Hope we both enjoy it donk.
Well impressed that Leas Cliff Hall have had two bands on this year that I have been really keen to see - first Turin Brakes then the Polyphonic Spree.
Makes a change from the 'Sounds of the 60s' stuff they normally have on there
Well well well what can I say...as I never have heard or seen them before, last night was a real treat.
Really hard to explain how I felt watching them but had a massive smile on my face and thought it was a great gig. Is the album worth purchasing as now I have been converted and seen the light..I think I want to:clap:

Never been able to see them live but their latest re-release of their first album comes with a nice DVD with some live footage. Very nice. I got mine from the HongKong CD-Wow (http://www2.cd-wow.com.hk) page where it's about 9 pounds. (if you buy from the British CD-Wow you'll end up paying 11 pounds....)
