At the risk of being a bit :dork:y I know a few of you follow grown-up rounders so thought I'd try and start a baseball thread.

Being a Mets fan  :oh-hum: :( I've not got the enjoyment of my team making a run at the Series. However, I have to say it's very pleasing to see some of the small market teams making a run for it. On that basis I'm rooting for either the A's or the Twins. Personally I reckon the A's have an excellent chance aslong as they don't blow it like last year. I'd be happy with anyone but the Yankees.

So, who do you follow and who do you reckon will win it this year?

/me sits back and waits for thread to plummet!

For my sins I'm a Cubs fan. It's pretty tight in the AL West with the Angels and A's tied for the lead, both teams have good solid lineup's with great pitching especially from Washburn for the Angels and Mulder for the A's.

Woo hoo, a reply.

I'd just been on espn and seen that the Angels had taken 3 of 4 to tie it at the top of the AL West. The Angels have now gone 9-1 in their last 10.

Also noticed the Mets have won 8 out of their last 10. :|

It's pretty amazing that the As managed a 21 game winning streak but were still only 2 and a half games head after that. It's a good race and should be interesting to see who comes out on top. It's likely the loser will be the wildcard team and have to face the Yankees which Could work in their favour as it's probably easier to beat the Yankees in a 5 game series.

I haven't seen as many games this season but it would be great to see the As or Twins win but I think it's likely to be the Yankees again.

Massive baseball fan here - don't really support a team, just a general fan of the game. And a big thumbs up to C5's coverage. Johnny Gould and Josh Chetwynd (sp?) are 2 of the better sports presenters on TV IMO and really add to the already excellent coverage

Indeed they are but Todd Maklin was even better and should have received awards for his coverage of US Sport on C5.

Agreed, but lets face it some people think that Andy Townsend, Ron Atkinson, Garth Crooks etc are worthy of being on TV so I doubt he'd get any recognition if he presented for the next 20 years. :oh-hum:

I think being tucked away on C5 on the early hours allows Johnny etc to be a bit more relaxed and off-the-cuff which makes it a better programme, although their budget is probably tiny.

On a related note Jon Miller and Joe Morgan are excellent.

Barry Bonds and Bobby Bonilla?

If so they were on the verge of great things - I think they won the NL East on several occasions - then those two became free agents and they returned to minnow status.

I imagine it did feel a bit odd - it even seems strange watching a game at 12.30ish our time and it's bright sunshine at the game (especially on the west coast).

The 3 hour difference between coasts throws up some strange times. I noticed that there was a game this (mid-)week that was starting at 10.30am western time that involved West coast teams.

Just watched the Sun game Angels v Rangers and have to say that the Angels look good winning 13-4 with Troy Glaus hitting 3 home runs.

At the time it took then one game clear of the A's - remarkable considering the A's went on a run of 25-4 or something.

The game also highlighted how trying to buy yourself success i.e. the Rangers doesn't always work - they've got the best player in baseball in A-Rod and all it's got them is last place.

I shall watch last nights game tonight.

Its difficult to fully apreciate the difficulty and skill level involved in baseball until you see a game live.

The speed at which the players can throw the ball is mind-blowing, how anyone can hit a ball travelling at close to 100 m.p.h. with movement is incredible.

For big guys they can really move.

Been a Yanks fan for 8 years. Lived just over the Hudson and saw them play maybe 40 or 50 times in the 2 years I lived there. That was before they won everything, so I'm entirely excused! In fact in 1995 they got into the play-offs for the first time in 13 seasons. (although the Mariners knocked them out)

Obviously I want them to win.

The team I always pray don't win of course is the Red-sox, both because its hilarious they have never won it and because of the rivalry.

biggerman - your spot on - 'cos of the camera angle they use on tv you can't fully appreciate the movement of the ball

Watched the Yankees/D' Rays game taped from Wednesday. The number of Yankees fans in Florida was unbelievable and is all the more reason to dislike them - they truly are the Man Utd of baseball. :oh-hum: They lost last night though. :D

They showed the highlights of the Angels/A's game from Tues which looked like an amazing pitching duel between Washbourne and Mulder with the Angels sneaking it 1-0. However the A's won the last 2 games of the series to take a one game lead.

Exciting races in the west. :dork:

I understand what you mean about the Yankees, I lived in NY for two years and EVERYONE who comes buys their baseball caps, shirts etc.

That is why they are so wealthy and why they can afford the highest wages. It is great to see the other minnow clubs do well.

It is ironic that Yankee stadium is in such bad condition and is in a pretty bad area.

Personally I think the A's have better pitching than the Yankees so hopefully they can do the business and knock 'em out. :)

Sports in Europe could learn a lot from baseball, in how to promote their games and also how to entertain the fans when they are in the venue.

American sports fans expect value for money when they go to games, which is why all the stadia have big screens, mascots etc.

They also tend to create a family environment to encourage families to come along. (apart from the bleachers where the real hard-core fans reside). :norty:

Just watched the game taped from Sunday and they showed the footage of the coach being attacked - complete nutters. At one stage they seemed to be hitting one another.

As for the live game the Twins seem to be in free-fall now that they've won the division - I can't see them beating any of the other 3 teams in the AL.

Oakland seem to have pulled away from the Angels wehich means they won't meet the Yankees until the League Championship round.

In the NL I think Los Angeles, despite their come from behind win against San Diego, need to win their remaining 6 games to have a chance of catching San Francisco.

Looks like the Dodgers may have blown it after losing to Colorado last night - they're now 3 back of the Giants with only 5 games to go.

The D'Backs have now lost 5 straight and had it confirmed that Luis Gonzalez is out for the rest of the year with a separated shoulder, adding to the loss of pitcher Brain Anderson. This hurts their offense in a major way and puts more pressure on Schilling and Johnson. They may be able to get through the first round of the play-offs but I think they will struggle in the League Championship game.

john316
25-09-2002, 13:38
D'Backs just won't have the depth to beat say the Atlanta Braves in the playoffs unless Batista really pitches like a man possessed. My tip for the World Series is still Atlanta vs Yankees. The only team who could be able to beat the Yanks is the Oakland A's and hopefully they will meet in the American League championship game. Should be fantastic seeing Clemens vs Zito or Mussina vs Mulder

ed rooney
25-09-2002, 13:43
Based on this year's performances Zito and Mulder are far superior but the Yankees do have that aura about them and the experience - let's face it the A's blew it last year in the play-offs against the Yankees.

Lets hope having been there before they can learn from their mistakes 'cos I hate the yankees (and the Braves).

Play-off started last night - results below;

Twins 7 Athletics 5
Yankees 8 Angels 5
Cardinals 12 D'Backs 2

A couple of upsets, plus the Yankees needed to come from behind to win.

In other news, Mets manager Bobby Valentine has been made the scapegoat for a very poor perfomance and has been sacked. Personally I think the players should take more blame.

Incredible result that in Arizona - the Big Unit was just destroyed by the Cardinals! And Hudson loosing to the Twins? I thought an Oakland win was an absolute lock but just goes to show how amazing Playoffs can be in Sport! No change with those Yankees - every season, they seem to stare defeat in the face and somehow avoid it nearly every single time! :p

Get out of my thread. This threads for local people.

Who'd have thought that the most dominating pitcher in baseball could get hammered like that. Doubt they can make it two in a row as Schilling has been awesome this season.

I'm not too sure on Schilling at the mo - last few starts, he has been beaten up pretty bad giving up hits and runs all over the place. Plus that relief appearence on Sunday again made Curt look in pretty poor pitching form. Though he could just be fooling us all into thinking he's cold coming into the Post Season when he suddenly turns the form back on again! :p

Yankees/Angels last night was absolutely fantastic - really though the Yanks had it wrapped up with the bases loaded in the 8th inning but then Jeter gets that rather dodgy call on the 3rd strike but that takes nothing away from the Angels, they were better in all departments and it leaves this series looking wideopen now going back to Anaheim - hope the Yankees get a split there giving us game 5 live on Five on Sunday night!

The Giants won the decider 3-1 last night and move on to play the Cardinals. This means that the underdogs won all four series.

San Francisco are in the WS - they beat the Cardinals 2-1 with Kenny Lofton driving in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

TBH I think I'll be rooting for the Angels. Josh Chetwin made a telling comment on Sun night i.e. Bonds would probably not give up his individual achievements if it meant winning a WS, therefore I don't feel any sentimental reason to want him to win it.

WOW - what a game last night, the best I've seen all season!

I just knew they left Felix Rodriguez in just a little too long and it cost the Giants big time. Francisco Rodriguez though just destroyed SF in the middle innings looking and will surely become one of the most feared pitchers in MLB. Great to see Bonds slam another one out of the park against Percival in the top of the 9th - its just an awesome sight when he unleashes on a pitch that'd probably lead to an out for about 99% of hitters! :p

I'm having to watch the games the evening after too. I tried to stay up Saturday with feeble results.

Anyway two great games. The pitching has been hit and miss to say the least - poor starters then great relievers. It was obvious that Rodriguez was cooked for the Giants and should have been removed.

Rodriguez for the Angels was fantastic though. I don't think the camera can truly show the amount of movement he gets on some of his pitches. There seemed to be one that started out at the batter and ended up taking the outside corner - unbelievable.

Also Bonds summed it up for me with his home-run. Yes, it was awesome but I don't think it was necessary for the pose, not least because it didn't even tie the game. He did try hard in the dug-out to look as if he was cheering Santiago on when you just know he was still creaming himself about his home-run.

Go Angels.

ed rooney
23-10-2002, 15:41

Terrible performence by Anaheim last night - they got totally destroyed by the Giants and just cannot see any way possible for them to beat SF twice even if both final games are at home for the Angels. What a rather flat end to a fantastic World Series - Giants were beaten from the start and never looked like winning the game. That shattering defeat on Saturday night just ripped the heart out of them and as soon as Livan Hernandez let the Angels get in the lead in the 3rd, you could sense it was over.

Also seems likely that was Josh Chetwynd's final game as the C5 analyst - shame cos he and Johnny Gould work so well with each other. Hope the new replacement (if one is actually needed) is just as good as Josh and Todd were!

Another 5 months to wait until next season.
I really hope Channel 5 continue their excellent coverage next year but i have a horrible feeling that it will all come to an end at some stage.

Just one further thought, anybody else think that this loss will haunt Barry Bonds for the rest of his days?

Just caught up (always one day behind).

Well Saturdays game was awesome - what an exciting comeback. Plus the greatest player flapping around in the outfield. :oh-hum:

I slightly disagree about game 7 being a bit flat (only incomparison to game 6). The way the pitching had gone in the series there was always the possibility that it would breakdown again so it was edge of the seat stuff in that respect. Plus there was the tying run at the plate in the 9th.

Overall pleased that the Angels won and I don't feel too sorry for Bonds. If he was less arrogant then I would but he just seems to rub people the wrong way e.g. posing after home runs, even trying to "bare-hand" balls when he should use his glove.

Dave  - if it wasn't a wig he'd definitely used way too much hairspray. And how did you manage to stay awake, I lasted until the 3rd.

I like baseball but don't watch much. I happened to TiVo game six and watched it Sunday afternoon afer mi dish got blown out of alignment. What a game, the fightback by the Angels was fantastic, the response in the ninth and then the final game by the Giants was pathetic. Game six will be remembered for years to come.

Now the WS is over the exciting stuff starts i.e. trades etc

Big managerial news for me (a Mets fan) is Art Howe has left Oakland to move to New York. To say his welcome by the NY press has been a bit frosty is a severe understatement. :oh-hum:

Several other teams have changed managers - more later. :)

Don't forget Lou Pinella to Tampa Bay and Buck Showalter had already gone to Texas.

It wouldn't be a massive surprise if Dusty Baker ended up elsewhere either, possibly the Cubs.

kjn6371
31-10-2002, 13:44
'Sweet Lou' being a Florida native should be a good match for Tampa. There's lots of good potential free agents this off season including Roger Clemens,Greg Maddux,Tom Glavine and Jeff Kent.Dusty Baker is top of the Cubbies wanted list the general mamger has been given the authority to make whatever offer it takes to get Dusty.

ed rooney
31-10-2002, 14:45
Lou must really want to be near his family 'cos Tampa Bay are terrible at the mo'.

The problem with those free agents are that they are old. It's possible that they will decline next year, and definitely will if given a mult-year contract. I think Edguardo Alfonzo is a free agent as well and he'd make a much better bet than Kent.

I don't know about you but Dusty didn't seem that great a manager during the WS - some of his decisions were questionable including using the dug-out as a creche.

kjn6371
31-10-2002, 15:05
I think Dusty would be a good fit for the Cubbies, while he didn't set the world alight in the World Series I think he would do a good job.Ryne Sandberg approached the Cubs management about the vacancy but they want somebody with experience. If Dusty dosen't join the Cub's I wouldn't mind seeing Bobby Valentine take over.

Ooh, thanks for that interesting news - makes you wonder why Art Howe left Oakland though. They have a fantastic young rotation whereas the Mets seem to be using a patch work method. :oh-hum:

Maybe counting his $250 million will ease his pain.

I tend to think that you lean towards someone who's has contributed to an overall team effort - I believe Tejada inspired the A's to success - didn't he hit two consecutive game winning hits to keep their streak going?

A-Rod is simply the best hitter (why the Mets didn't sign him I'll never know - he would even have come for less money) but plays on a lame team.

Bonds was a "no-brainer". Even when he's not getting pitched to he still influences the game. He's still stuck up his own @rse though. :D

I think there's enough power with the likes of Schmidt,Pudge and Ryno, there's a good mixture between power and speed plus great fielders. The 86 Mets were a great team with players like Gary Carter,Keith Hernandez,Dwight Gooden,Lenny Dykstra and Daryl Strawberry.

ed rooney

Dwight Gooden was such a waste of talent.

Not quite sure what to make of the move to be honest. Hampston was a very good pitcher but you just wonder whether Coor Field has affected him.

Also, do the Braves know something about Glavine??? and will he turn out to be another high-price "veteran" for the Mets. :oh-hum:

I would like to see Atlanta somehow manage to keep a hold of Tom Glavine (can't imagine him in anything other than a Braves uniform).

The choice of Jones in CF this is purely down to his abilities in the Outfield as I figure that he would be able to cover more ground and so provide aid to both Bonds and Sosa in the outfield, it also happens that he has started to hit better last season (still streaky though).

I enjoy watching great pitching and pitchers who can (to a fashion bat) and I have always enjoyed watching Hampton, it hasn't been nice to watch/hear about all the troubles he has had pitching, hopefully the move to Atlanta will get him back to his old self.

As for the team I support..... now that is the difficult question to answer.... I haven't really got a team that I can say I support (unlike in the NFL where I support the Redskins), but if push comes to shove I would probably say Cleveland Indians (but I do like the Braves and Red Socks)

I can honestly remember only one game on Channel 4 and that seemed to be around the time that Channel 4 had the live NFL as well and MLB was pushing for more coverage (sadly never happened).

All I can remember really about the game was it involved the Cubs and that the late Harry Carrey was commentating for Channel 4, he seemed to spend most of the time reading out hello messages :)

Then suddenly he disappeared .... It was the 7th innings stretch, next minute he turned up to lead the singing of 'Take me out to the ball game'

I think it was at that moment I was hooked :D

Walker-Williams Trade appears to be dead for now. In the end both Walker & Williams refused to waive their 'no-trade clause'.

Walker didn't want to defer part of his salary into '03 & '04 (never knew they could do this!) and Williams didn't want to due to the situation regarding his children.

I remember when Williams was with Cleveland he was prepared to retire rather than to be away from and to raise his children, in the end he was traded to the Diamondback as he had requested. (Have always respected that he had and still has the interest of his children 1st and his baseball career 2nd).

Will be interesting to see how this one finishes as there is still talk that they might try and get this trade resurrected.

kjn6371
23-11-2002, 12:05
Not suprized Williams turned down the deal,he's got a few business intrests in the Arizona area and like you say he's a family man.If Matt did go to Colorado he would certainly be a starter so like you say things might develop.

It appears that David Bell has signed a 4 year deal with the Philly's.

One down two to go it would appear of the three players thay have been chasing. Next up Glavine and Thome.

Getting interesting is this :)

kjn6371
25-11-2002, 10:45
The Phillies think Glavine will stay put at Atlanta while Cleveland are putting together a last ditch attempt to keep Thome.Like you say it's getting interesting.

GarFra
25-11-2002, 11:18
Glavine - Can't say that I am surprised by what the Phillies think with regard to Glavine .... the whole time that he has been on the free agency market I have always had this feeling that he is using that fact to get the deal he is after from Atlanta.

Thome - Again, I think he wants to stay with Cleveland, but is after a deal for what he feels he is worth. Cleveland on the other hand appear to be trying to get him on a cheaper contact than they can really expect.

Is it just me or are the Phillies on a spend crazy spell, they must be expecting a heck of a lot of extra income from the new stadium to hope to cover these contacts.

If the Phillies somehow managed to get all 3 players!!!.... what an interesting season ahead for us all :)

kjn6371
25-11-2002, 14:07
The Phillies must feel they've got a good squad who just need a couple of players for them to compete with the Braves. It's a bold move and it would nice if it pays off for them.

Greg Maddux - What happening? .... Haven't heard anything about teams interested in him :|

GarFra
28-11-2002, 15:47
Thome - It's interesting to read reports that the Indians have 'altered' their final offer to Thome and that he now wants to take the holidays to consider his decision.....

Glavine - he really is desperate for that 4th year on a contract isn't he :) he is determined to reach 300 wins before he calls it a day, I am really surprised at how little Atlanta are doing with regard to Glavine.

kjn6371
28-11-2002, 19:07
I think Thome will stay at Cleveland especially now the Tribe have made an increased offer.

It does seem strange the lack of effort on the Braves part regarding Glavine, perhaps something happened behind the scenes.

GarFra
28-11-2002, 19:27
Would love for Thome to stay with Cleveland.... going to need a lot of help over the next few seasons are Cleveland.

I can understand Cleveland being nervious of offering big contracts to players.... not exactly worked out that in the past :(

But still Thome has shown year in year out his ability and hopefully he will be able to do so for several years to come.

Glavine thing does seem strange... wonder what is up there... Atlanta also seem to be very quiet with regard to Maddux also. Perhaps they have decided that neither player is worth the money they are asking for when you consider their ages right now and what age they will be when the contracts looking for would be expected to end. I think that who ever ends up with Glavine and Maddux might regret any lengthy deals they make in a few years down the line and trying to trade them on then will be near impossible with the new rules regarding players wages.

Ahhh the fun of the close season and trades :)

Just read that on the mlb website.

Also see that they have waived the five seasons rule with regard to Darryl Kile.

Good pitcher that he was I don't think he was good enough to get in on the first attempt, but he might just get there with the feeling towards him at the moment.

So who do you think might get voted in this year?

kjn6371
02-12-2002, 10:55
Eddie Murray's a shoe-in with over 3,000 hits and 500 homers.I hope Gary Carter gets in this year,a great catcher who fully deserves the honour. And I hope Ryno gets in,a great fielder at second base plus a good clutch hitter.

The Cubbies have been busy and traded Todd Hundley (C) to the Dodgers in exchange for Eric Karros (1b) and Mark Grudzielanek (2b).Karros should bring some leadership to the Cubs. They've also aquired reliever Mike Remlinger from the Braves.

GarFra
04-12-2002, 22:50
I think the Cubs have done some good business there. Hundley just never seemed to get it together in his time at the Cubs. I like Karros and his style of playing and along with Remlinger joining it should make them a more competive team.

The way things are going it looks like all change at the Braves with all the pitching changes that are (and likely) to happen.

The Mets were awesome in '86. Then in 2000 they had the potential to go on and be really competitive and Steve Phillips went and cocked it up. Not resigning John Olerud was a major mistake which had knock-on repercusions for other postions. :oh-hum:

Hundley has been pretty poor, but a lot of that is down to injury I believe.

Dodgers players might as you say only be really average, but you have to remember they are going to a team where the manager has a talent for getting the most out of players.

Probably support Cleveland Indians more than any other team, but not really got a team.

Oakland let Art Howe go I suspect due to the fact that they had a replacement already working for the organisation in Ken Macha and so there would be little upheavel ... also the fact that Macha was being courted by quite a few teams when they were looking for new managers.

Looks like Glavine has gotten what he has been after and has chosen to go to the Mets, I still find it very strange that Atlanta didn't try that hard to keep him (what do they know that no one else does).

One thing I've never really understood is the concept of General Managers. Using the Mets as an example, Steve Phillips goes out and signs the players he wants and then presents them to Bobby Valentine. He then has to utilise them as best he can regardless of whether they fit in with his philosophy. Surely it makes sense to allow the manager to go and the players he wants.

I didn't really have much time to be honest - I only got the shirt by nipping into "Modells" near Macy's about an hour before I returned home.

If I'd had more time I'd have hunted out the Mets shop in Manhatten. I walked past a Yankees shop. :oh-hum:

Didn't get into any book shops either - bought some dirt cheap Levis tho' :)

Hope to head back there during next season so might be able to do a bit more browsing.

All my baseball books are from Sportspages in Manchester. I've still got several that are unread. Last one I bought was the David Cone/Roger Angel one. I have to say he's by far my favourite sports writer - very eloquent, poetic even. :dork:

Nice description of Olerud GarFra,I've liked him since his days with the Blue Jays.Like you say he's not flashy but he consistently puts up solid numbers, very similar to Mark Grace another player I amire.

GarFra

Can't say that Ivan Rodriguez will be leaving Texas will come as a surprise to anyone - the last 2 seasons he has been plagued with injuries .... perhaps now is the time for Rodriguez to move away from the catchers position? - can't see it happening this coming season, but he really does need to do it.

Any team that does take Rodriguez is going to have a fairly decent back-up pitcher as I suspect Rodriguez will only be able to play a certain amount of games at catcher.

Cleveland are going through major upheaval at the moment, but I can see what they are trying to do. I still feel that Cleveland are suffering from some poor contacts to certain player from a few years back, clearly the have learnt from this, although (sadly) it did cost them retaining Thome.

Perhaps not for the next 2 seasons we can't expect much from Cleveland (would be nice though :)) ... but I get the feeling come 05-06 seasons that Cleveland again will be a force to be reckoned with.

As I said earlier Steve Phillips was insane not to resign him even if it took several millions more than Seattle (his home town) offered him.

I don't know whther this is true but apparently because of having suffered from an anuerysm (??) Olerud wears a helmet to field in (definitely true) which he also wears in the shower.

Ricky Henderson noticed that his team-mate (in Seattle) was wearing a helmet in the shower and said "I knew a guy in NY who used to do that" - they were both Olerud.

Henderson = :nuts:

D'oh - A proper Homer Simpson moment

With the loss of Jim Thome the Cincinnati Post reported that the Reds may trade 1b Sean Casey to the Indians. The Reds are keen on moving Adam Dunn from the outfield to 1b.Casey's a solid hitter but he's no match for Thome in the power department

Sean Casey would be nice..... the problem for who ever does take over at 1b for Cleveland will have to deal with the comparisons to Thome. :|

Somehow I dont see either Earl Synder or Travis Hafner being the answer to filling Thome's shoes.I think the Indians will trade for a 1b or a outfielder capable of becoming a 1b.
