Alright, so the breathtaking video quality on The Fast and the Furious, A Bug's Life and Moulin Rouge has rightly been praised to the skies, but what about older films that offer beautiful transfers?

The best pre-70s transfers I've seen include:

L'Avventura
Batman The Movie
Les Enfants du Paradis - Criterion
Written on the Wind
Tokyo Olympiad
The Wizard of Oz
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
Citizen Kane
Elgar
Sullivan's Travels
North by Northwest

I'd add:

Black Narcissus (Criterion) - absolutely gorgeous transfer!
Mon Oncle (Criterion) - shows how clear and sharp a b&w transfer can be.
Walt Disney Treasures (Silly Symphonies and Mickey Mouse) - astonishing for seventy year old material.

Agree over L'Avventura - a stunning disk!

Edit - oops! Of course, I meant M. Hulot's Holiday, not Mon Oncle - the latter is in colour of course!

All things considered, the most breathtaking transfer I've yet to see on DVD remains The Wizard of Oz. Hell, you'd probably have to give it 10/10 if it was made yesterday!

I was actually amazed at the quality of Mary Poppins.

I would also add three more Criterion releases:

Branded to Kill
Tokyo Drifter
Juliet of the Spirits

The original 'Planet of the Apes' looks pretty damn fine.

I'd also add a couple more Hitchcock's from Criterion...

Notorious & Rebecca.

The Tartan Bergman discs are quite impressive, as are the criterions. Thankyou to the Swedish film institute.

even Carltons aren't too bad (Brief Encounter, Red SHoes)

The films in the Ealing Boxset are pretty hot looking.

Warner's R1 and R4 releases of Now Voyager boasts a restoration and transfer every bit as good as Citizen Kane. The R1 She Wore a Yellow Ribbon is stunning, as is Anchor Bay's R1 of The Devil Rides Out.

BTW don't be fooled into thinking every Criterion is perfect; I thought Billy Liar was a tad ropey in places and The Ruling Class is quite poor.

Of the films in the Ealing Boxset, I thought The Man in the White Suit was by far the best transfer.

So many films, so little time...

Just got Singin in the Rain which is stunningly sharp, as is The Women. Warner lead the field in catalogue restorations.
