I watched the first one last night and found that I actually really rather enjoyed it. The fantastically over the top special effects (the wasp death scene anyone?), stupid storyline, cheesy dialogue and some really ridiculous characters and I loved it. I got it from the Sleepaway camp boxset (thanks Maz) and so I've got 2 more to go.

Has anyone else seen this and what were your opinions?

Haven't seen 2 or 3 but really enjoyed the first one as well. Originally had it on video as Nightmare Vacation!
I thought the "shock" ending was pretty original compared to most other slashers.
Is the version in the boxset still the same heavily cut version Anchor Bay released originally?

Nice boxset. The two sequels are quite good in a cheesy poor acting type way but an enjoyable few hours. Commentaries are remarkably informative and just plain fun.

Don't know about the first one being cut...didn't see too much in it to suggest that it was un-edited though...but you never know with Anchor Bay.

...from Colin Jacobson's review of the original SC on the DVD Movie Guide site:

"...The highest praise I can offer Sleepaway Camp? It's often in focus. Other than that, I have nothing positive to say about this absolutely horrible film. I've reviewed close to 600 DVDs since 1999 but I don't think any of them feature a movie as bad as this one. Sleepaway Camp is one of the worst pictures ever made..."

...can't please all of the people all of the time...

...as for SC2, take a look at this rave <a href="http://zombie.dreamhost.com/reviews/sleepaway2.html">review</a>...

...and at this <a href="http://www.joblo.com/arrow/sleepawaycamp3.htm">review</a> of SC3...

...Anchor Bay - the poor man's Criterion...

I really like Sleepaway Camp (one of those films I saw many years ago on VHS and have a soft spot for)
I too bought the box set but haven't got around to watching parts 2 and 3 yet.

My box set arrived this week and it's quite a nice package. Just got to find the time to watch it now though.

I thought I'd dig this one out the archive and take a look, I managed to get an original red cross emblem boxset, although I ordered it only a couple of years ago - a long time after the original release.

I thought the first film was very good and original, with a really realistic and thus dark atmosphere, while the second films were enjoyable trash.

A complete boxset and film review for anyone who doesn't have the set yet: Sleepaway Camp (http://mondo-esoterica.net/boxsets/Sleepaway%20Camp.html).

Plus, a bonus for any slasher fans - Cheerleader Camp (http://mondo-esoterica.net/Cheerleader%20Camp.html)...

A classic ending but a rubbish beginning and middle.

The original's great and features one of my all-time favourite horror movie endings (along with Halloween 3 and The House on Sorority Row).

Not the very, very end but a short while beforehand where the boy is hiding in the shadows and emerges wearing a clown costume.... creeps the hell out of me every damn time.

Sure is. R0 US is anamorphic but hard to find, the UK one is non-anamorphic but you can pick it up from most places.

I just got a new sealed DVD of the anamorphic R1 Elite release from Amazon Marketplace for £2.54 plus P&P, is it really that scarce? I note there is another version offered which is £30 odd so was there a predecessor that was better in some way?
