View Full Version : Song you want played at your funeral?
Morbid time again....
....just been listening to 'Hollow Life' by Korn and thought it'd be a cool (if such a thing could be cool) song to play at my funeral.
There are a few others i'd play too but can't remember them right now  (i'd better not die anytime soon).
So what's your funeral song going to be??

i just want the whole korn CD to be played at mine, and depending how long it lasts maybe go in to the newest slipknot one aswell!
not many people would actually attend my funeral and the few that would, would be there making sure i was dead!:)

My choice of song (as recently discussed with my girlfriend) would be Guns 'n' Roses - November Rain.
'nuff said.
DJb.
OK maybe i should have said why you'd choose that song too.
For me 'Hollow Life' has that strange ethereal/eerie vibe to it yet also some chunky guitars. Quite a dichotomy of effects and feelings. Plus the lyrics seem quite apt for my state of mind lately:
We come to this place
Falling through time
Living a hollow life
Always we're taking
Waiting for signs
Hollow life
Is there ever any wonder
Why we look to the sky
Search space
Asking why?
All alone
where is God?
Looking down
We don't know
I'm not too sure how a song like that would go down in a service though  not that i'd have to worry about that.
anything by the manics, korn or some other cool band like placebo who write really meaningful songs not like boybands.

I want this played
When you walk through a storm,
Hold your head up high,
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm,
There's a golden sky,
And the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind,
Walk on through the rain,
Though your dreams be tossed and blown,
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone...
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone...
You'll never walk alone
Must be the Celtic supporter in me

I'll be having The Stone Roses I am the resurrection (SP?) at my funeral. The full length version as well.

The Beatles - Across the Universe
Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup,
They slither while they pass, they slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my open mind,
Possessing and caressing me.
Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world,
Nothing's gonna change my world.
Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes,
That call me on and on across the universe,
Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box they
Tumble blindly as they make their way
Across the universe
Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world,
Nothing's gonna change my world.
Sounds of laughter shades of earth are ringing
Through my open views inviting and inciting me
Limitless undying love which shines around me like a
million suns, it calls me on and on
Across the universe
Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world,
Nothing's gonna change my world.
I'm not too sure if I'd go for the acoustic original version or the 'Let It Be' version with Lennon's phased voice.
Although everyone at my funeral will probably put on 'Black Lace' or summin!!
My sister wants 'Dancing on the ceiling' at her funeral.

KISS-I Will Be There
Sample of the lyrics:
I will be there
Wanna be there
I will hear you when you call
Give you anything at all
I will be there
Anywhere
Like a father to his son
Time moves quickly as the years go by
All these moments slip away
When I'm gone and life will carry on
You will know someway
I will be there
I will be there
We've had this question before & my answer is the same .....

I actually live above a funeral parlour and to combat the sound of funereal organ music and hymns that I hear due to their lousy soundproofing I often put this track on as revenge.
I may also consider using 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go' by the Clash if I decide to get cremated......the guy in charge could move the conveyor backwards and forwards just as I'm going in:nuts: 'its always tease, tease, tease'

For me it's got to be either:
The orchestral version of Metallicas Nothing Else Matters (Not the S&M version, it was a b-side to one of the Black singles, just James on guitar with a full orchestra)
or
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Under The Bridge (If anyone puts the awful All Saints version on, i'll kill 'em, actually I haven't thought that last statement through have I :))
Just for a laugh i'd like them to slip on a quick blast of Nine Inch Nails Heresy for the line "God is dead, and no one cares, if there is a hell, i'll see you there". As Loki says in Dogma - "I just like to f#!$ with the clergy; keep 'em on their toes." :D

I don't think I'd want anyone to be morose at my funeral. For that reason (and because I've just rediscovered it), my vote would go for Ween's Push Th' Little Daisies.
For general ambience, I'd like a selection of Zappa's guitar solos, stuff like Watermelon In Easter Hay which RDNZL has mentioned (full title is "Playing A Guitar Solo With This Band Is Like Trying To Grow A Watermelon In Easter Hay"), Blank Napkins, Pink Napkins, the solo from Yo' Mama, Sleep Dirt, etc, etc until every sane person leaves early.

funnily enough i was just thinking about this myself and it would have to be
In My Life by the Beatles - beautiful song.
'Deacon blues' by Steely Dan -
This is the night of the expanding man
My shape is my shame there where I used to stand
So useless to ask me why
Blow a kiss and say goodbye
I'll make it this time
I'm ready to cross that fine line.
I learned to work the saxophone
I play just what I feel
Drink Scotch whiskey all night long
And die behind the wheel.
They got a name for the winners in the world
I want a name when I lose
They call Alabama 'the crimson tide'
call me Deacon Blues.
Thinking again about this... three minutes of ...
"Spirits are Calling My Name" from the Swedish Eurovision Song Contest 2001 (forget who).
Or,
"Road to Nowhere" by Talking Heads.

A Minor Incident by Badly Drawn Boy
Made me cry the first few times I heard it
"And if the chance should happen that I never see you again, just remember that I'll always love you..."
Several serious numbers:-
"One Summer Dream" by ELO
"Legend of Babel" by Giorgio Moroder (instrumental from the "Metropolis" soundtrack)
"Surfs Up" - Beach Boys (SURPRISE!)
"Made in Heaven" (Freddie's version, NOT the Queen "cover")
and for a smile
the "Farewell" song by Vincent Price from "Basil: The Great Mouse Detective"
Steve
I think "Uncle EDITED" from the South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut soundtrack one be a good one to make the funeral memorable :)

Dying Days - Screaming Trees
Alive - Pearl Jam:)
My mate had requested that at his cremation "Burning Down the House" by Talking Heads, should be played as the coffin was lowered. It seemed strange trying to stifle laughter during such a sombre ceremony.
I would choose "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" by Pink Floyd, all 9 parts!
hmmm... to make 'em sad or happy...
for starters,
Lullaby by Tom Waits
"Sun is red; moon is cracked
Daddy's never coming back
Nothing's ever yours to keep
Close your eyes, go to sleep
If i die before you wake
Don't you cry, don't you weep
Nothing's ever as it seems
Climb the ladder to you dreams
If i die before you wake
Don't you cry, don't you weep
Nothing's ever yours to keep
Close your eyes; go to sleep".
or maybe Through the Long Night by Billy Joel?
"Cold hands, sad eyes
Dark Irish silence
It's so late, but I'll wait
Through the long night with you
Warm tears, Bad dreams
Soft trembling shoulders
The old fears, but I'm here
Through the long night with you
What has it cost you
I almost lost you
A long, long time ago
Oh, you should have told me
But you had to need to know
All your past sins are sins past
You should be sleeping
It's all right, sleep tight
Through the long night with me
No, I didn't start it
You were broken hearted
From a long, long time ago
Oh, the way you hold me
Is all that I need to know
And it's so late, but I'll wait
Through the long night with you".
that song always me feel so sad...:(

While I don't actually like NIN much, I think "Closer" could heavily annoy as many people as possible ("you bring me closer to God", and the infamous "animal" quote).
On a similar line:
Black Lace - "Agadoo" (most annoying song ever)
Take That - "Back For Good" (for the irony)
Kylie Minogue - "Better The Devil You Know"/"I Should Be So Lucky" (for the unintentional humour)
AC/DC - "Highway To Hell" (cause it's funny. so there.)
Meat Loaf - "Bat Out Of Hell" (ditto)
Blur - "Song 2"
Rob D - "Clubbed To Death"
Bee Gees - "Staying Alive"
The Clash - "London Calling" ("cause I...LIVE BY THE RIVER!!!")
Sex Pistols - "Anarchy In The UK" ("I am an antichrist!")
The Velvet Underground - "Waiting For The Man" ("...twenty-six dollars in my hand...")
Seriously, however:
Radiohead - "Street Spirit"/"Motion Picture Soundtrack"/"True Love Waits"/"Follow Me Around"
Blur - "There's No Other Way"
DJ Shadow - "Blood On The Motorway"/"You Can't Go Home Again"
Air - "All I Need"/"Playground Love" (the latter's from The Virgin Suicides, though...)
New Order - "Blue Monday" (12" version, naturally...)
Joy Division - "New Dawn Fades"/"The Eternal"/"Decades"
Bjork - "All Is Full Of Love"/"Pagan Poetry"

Mmmm guess meaningful songs could be interpreted loosely if you include placebo.. :p Can't comment on Korn but Manics would just scrape in.

he loved queen and wanted "who wants to live forever" played at his funeral. It was possibly the most moving thing I have ever witnessed:(
Er, do you mean moving as in everyone walked out when Queen came on? :gag:

BLOOD BROTHERS - Bruce Springsteen
We played king of the mountain out on the end
The world come chargin' up the hill, and we were women and men
Now there's so much that time, time and memory fade away
We got our own roads to ride and chances we gotta take
We stood side by side each one fightin' for the other
We said until we died we'd always be blood brothers
Now the hardness of this world slowly grinds your dreams away
Makin' a fool's joke out of the promises we made
And what once seemed black and white turns to so many shades of gray
We lose ourselves in work to do and bills to pay
And it's a ride, ride, ride, and there ain't much cover
With no one runnin' by your side my blood brother
On through the houses of the dead past those fallen in their tracks
Always movin' ahead and never lookin' back
Now I don't know how I feel, I don't know how I feel tonight
If I've fallen 'neath the wheel, if I've lost or I've gained sight
I don't even know why, I don't know why I made this call
Or if any of this matters anymore after all
But the stars are burnin' bright like some mystery uncovered
I'll keep movin' through the dark with you in my heart
My blood brother
or
PARADISE - Bruce Springsteen
Where the river runs to black
I take the schoolbooks from your pack
Plastics and wire and your kiss
The breath of eternity on your lips
In the crowded marketplace
I drift from face to face
I hold my breath and close my eyes
I hold my breath and close my eyes
And I wait for paradise
And I wait for paradise
The Virginia hills have gone to brown
Another day another sun going down
I visit you in another dream
I visit you in another dream
I reach and feel your hair
Your smell lingers in the air
I brush your cheek with my fingertips
I taste the void upon your lips
And I wait for paradise
And I wait for paradise
I search for you on the other side
Where the river runs clean and wide
Up to my heart the waters rise
Up to my heart the waters rise
I sink `neath the water cool and clear
Drifting down, I disappear
I see you on the other side
I search for the peace in your eyes
But they're as empty as paradise
They're as empty as paradise
I break above the waves
I feel the sun upon my face

Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear The Reaper
Cyndi Lauper - Time After Time
Frank Sinatra - My Way
Simon & Garfunkel - Bridge Over Troubled Water
Dunno what order they'd be played in though :D
I'm in a cheery kind of mood, and thought I'd start a thread on this subject - look what a search turned up :)
So how about it? My current fave would be the deceptively jolly 'Tonight We Fly' by The Divine Comedy (I prefer my sentiment sneaky to bludgeoning...)
Someone mentioned my other choice waaay back at the start of the thread - the Beatles' 'Across the Universe'.
so what are yours?

The Finale and End Credits from West Side Story.
Or Friggin' in the Riggin', I haven't decided. Or possibly No Leaf Clover by Metallica (in which case everyone has to play air guitar, including my corpse. Possibly through some kind of animatronics: failing that bits of string).
A Warm Place - NIN - as i am being carried in popew style on a big bit of mdf with a maniacle grin on my face
Paradise city - G'n'R - as i get lowered down to be burnt like a burger on an idiots barbeque.
All of this will be followed by the Ruiners stuff raffle - everyone would be given tickets on their way in - prizes relate to tickets - saves fighting really.

I find Grandstand quite moving as it reminded me of my childhood and when I feel a bit down, just hearing this reduces me to tears.
I think I need help now...

was at my wife's grandfathers funeral yesterday, he had bagpipe music to come in to, which was quite fitting (not that he's scottish, but its fairly sombre to match the mood).
But we all walked out to 'Walk of Life' by Dire Straits - which was so odd I almost laughed. Particularly as it wasn't the original, but some guitar instumental version that sounded like it came from 'telstar'

Not sure. Maybe 'Please Don't Go' by KWS
That said, The saddest song I've heard at a funeral was 'Girl, I'm Gonna Miss You' by Milli Vanilli. Had me welling up did that one. Worst thing was she was a good friend of mine and died at only 18 :(

Zappa's divine guitar instrumental "Watermelon in Easter Hay" (the one used at end of Y Tu Mama Tambien)
King Crimson's Epitaph
Pink Floyd's Great Gig in the Sky
Sounds awful to many, I bet, but I would like "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" and "Club Tropicana" played at my funeral.
I'm determined that upbeat music and things be the order of the day. I love my life generally and want people to remember me as being a bit off the wall, but generally a pleasant, good-natured guy who laughed a lot.
....then again, no1 wants to get into a discussion with me about how I would rather shuffle off this mortal coil.

Pink Floyd - Brain damage/Eclipse
And The Doors - When the music's over
;)
Considering you only get around 20 - 25 minutes per service with a cremation (was sadly at one today and timed it), and with the talking by what ever reverend you've chosen, and if there's going to be a hymn or two (or maybe a couple of rounds of "If you're happy and you know it...) you'll going to be left with music going in and music going out.
Personally, if I can't get James Brown to do my eulogy, then a powerpoint presentation will suffice.
Music going in would be: "2129", by Alabama 3,
and going out.... "Frankenstein" by the Edgar Winter Group.
