Was flicking through the satellite channels last night looking for a good halloween film to watch and noticed Friday the 13th on a new channel ANX ( I think) Dreadful big white logo but thats for another forum.
Anyway I just realised Id never seen this and it certainly spawned a load of sequels so I thought I'd give a go since it must have been decent to have been so influencial.
OMG it was poor, the acting was utterly appalling and it contained maybe two genuinely scary bits. One of which involved a very young Kevin Bacon.
I'm trying to work out if I thought poor from the genre moving on so much since then or if it was just poor generally. Very disappointed since it was either that or watch The Others on DVD :brickwall
Is it me?
i liked the ending in the boat.
You think the first one's bad - wait till you see the others.

I was thinking that myself :oh-hum:
Yes, compared to the others it's actually quite good. I'm a Friday 13th fan though, I know they're terrible really, but I grew up with them and I still enjoy them now. I used to sneak downstairs at 3 in the morning when I was 12 or 13 to watch and tape them on b.s.b., and then cycle over to one my friends houses in the morning with the tape. I've still got some of the tapes which have got ratings out of 5 that we put on them (referring to the number of "juicy bits", not the quality of the film :))
I can see how it may look terrible by todays standards with the First Person killing mode ... I still think there great though :D
I thought it was quite amusing - far better than Halloween 5 which was on later on BBC1 :p
I grew up with them as well, and overcome with nostalgia recently bought Part 3 and Part 6 in an HMV Sale (which were my favourites!!)
I have to say that they are shockingly bad!!
:oh-hum:
Stangely though, I also got Jason X, which I can't recommend highly enough!! Top-notch entertainment:)
:)

I'll probably watch Jason X or Freddy Vs Jason - Both are much better than some of the original series.

Original all the way for me - it got too silly as it went along!

The UK dvd is the uncut version of Part 1,but the US dvd is cut thanks to Paramount who have cut versions of all the films in the US and all but Part 1 in the UK.
Without the gruesome effects the film is zilch.
Watch out for Kevin Bacon looking down at the poker as its rips through his chest and blood spurts out.
This is badly cut in the R version

I watched a different Kevin Bacon film tonight for Friday the 13th.... Stir of Echoes - nice little chiller.
Certainly scared the crap outta the other half!

I hadn't seen the uncut version until the R2 disc came out, and there's a couple of brilliantly nasty/comical deaths in there that I had previously (i.e. When watching it at 9 years of age on a Sunday morning before Gummi Bears) been unaware of. :notworthy

Aw, I love Friday The 13th. You have to be in the mood for 80s cheese though. My favourites are part 2, which is just fantastic trash and part 6, which is quite (intentionally) funny.

Actually all of the early cuts have been waived and if you buy any of the later movies on R2 they are identical to the US versions, so we have all of the uncut movies now. The Unrated versions will never see the light of day as the footage appears to be unavailable or unusable.

I'm a big fan of Friday the 13th. Some of the sequels are great fun too.
Not mad on "Jason Takes Manhattan" though

Part 4 is great fun too. The Savini fx returned, and it had the best Jason "death" of the lot :gag:
Yeah I think it got better as it went on, the only sequel I really hate was the 5th, really dire.
I watched Part 9 recently and was suprised I actually enjoyed it on second viewing, the gore was better than I remembered.
Part 4 and Part 7 are the best IMO and of course Freddy Vs Jason, which is much better than it should be.
how old is this thread? just noticed I've already replied ... 5 years ago!

'He's back the man behind the mask' - Classic song, love the Fridays to bits
'He's back the man behind the mask' - Classic song, love the Fridays to bits
It was terrible, admit it! It was a nasrty piece of 80's pop that was waiting on the end of a farily good (at the time) Alice Cooper album waiting to scare the unwary before we all got good and could lift the stylus off before the song started.
Proof!

I thought it was poor too, but then I always have.
On the other hand, Nightmare on Elm St Part 2 was on tv the other day, which is a very underrated horror flick. It gets slated everywhere, but is actually pretty good. I just guess people wanted to see more Freddy.

You misunderstood my post.
I know the R2 releases are the same as the R1.
Both are cut .
We dont have the uncut movies .Only part 1 is uncut in the UK.
IIRC the Paramount R1 boxset has much of the unrated gore included as extras so I dont think its correct to rule out ever seeing it back within the film.
The BBFC cuts that were waived are from the days of the intial VHS releases.
But the dvd's we have now are no more uncut than the VHS ever was

They are included as extras but they're in poor nick which is why they haven't been reinserted.
Plus Paramount rushed the boxset out without throwing much money at it, so perhaps didn't source the best available print.
After Halloween I think Friday the 13th has to be my favourite stalk n' slash series. Surely it's about time for another sequel - perhaps another job for Rob Zombie? I loved Freddy vs. Jason, not scary at all but ridiculously entertaining.

I'm actually really fond of Jason X. It's overly comical but it delivers what every 'Friday' film should, gore and T+A.
It's certainly a lot better than the dire sequels that came before it (7,8 & 9).
On the whole though I'm not really fond of the first movie. It's decent and has some nice kills but thats about it. Part 2 is fantastic with the slow lumbering Jason and Part 3 isn't bad despite the fact it's a gimmick film. After the Tommy Jarvis saga is complete, the films lose their way completely.
if anybodys interested thid is only £3.00 on offer in store at Virgin. Saw it today -Great Price!

And killer punchlines - "He's screwed".
Can't you buy a boxset of this.... from crystal lake to manhattan, but i believe its only avaiable on region 1 dvds

You certainly can, but all the films are heavily cut (the missing footage is included in the extra features, but not reinserted to the film) and it doesn't include Jason X, Freddy vs Jason or Jason Goes To Hell.

Def an old favourite of mine, the first anyway. I agree one or two of the sequels were entertaining also.
