View Full Version : Non-League football
Are there any members out there who go to watch non-league football? For my sins I watch my local team Kettering Town, and are currently propping up the conference table. We are in serious financial trouble at present and it looks almost certain that we will get relegated back to the DMPL.I have to say that on the whole most of the home games this season have been very entertaining apart from the officials who have been very poor(probably worser than the DMPL officials last season).
Forza Kettering Town and non-league footie.

You better believe it.Are you on prozac by any chance?
I always keep an eye on Dagenham and Rebridge's results.

I'm a season ticket holder at Yeovil.
But I have watched football this season from all over the Pyramid.
Oh, and yes the Officials are Pants in the Conference :brickwall
I live in Welling (just outside London, in Kent) and we've been in the Dr Marten's Prem for a couple of seasons now after many, many years flirting with relegation from the Conference.
The way we've been going, I can't see us getting back for a LONG time!
I don't go that often, but, of course, always keep an eye out for the results. It's a bit pricey for a Dr Marten's game - £7 IIRC! (I'm not sure how that compares with other teams at the same level mind).
Come on the Wings!!

I went watching Rushden & Diamonds in the play-offs last season and they were singing "We hate Ketterin(g) say we hate Kerrin(g)". I was thinking "ey?"
I keep intending going watching Leigh RMI.
I go and watch Sheffield Wednesday but on the form and kind of footy weve been playing this season, i think id see a better standard down the road at Worksop Town :( :D

Rushden and Diamonds is a dirty word round here.We hate them with a passion as well.Local rivalry and all that. Here's hoping their bubble will burst soon.

Stevenage Boro here, good luck tomorrow Fat Bloke, although I dont think you will need it. What a fall from grace for the Boro, we won the conference just 6 years ago :(

Were you at Villa Park in May Mickey? Just wondering not rubbing it in!
Hereford have done us a favour tonight by beating Chester in their game in hand. :D
Here's for a good game tomorrow.........if everyone can keep the cheering down that would be great. A Hangover tomorrow is on the cards I think.
Occasionally go to see Halifax Town, who are currently playing more stylish and exciting football than Leeds at the moment...

I'll be there on Boxing Day for the crucial six pointer.Come to the club house MickeyFinn6999 you'll be made more than welcome.I've a feeling that we both(us certainly though we all live in hope)will get relegated this season.Hope we both survive it as it's always a decent game and atmosphere at Rocky Road and Broadhall Way.
Good luck to Yeovil for the remainder of the season you should finally go up.You've always had excellent support(watched my first Kettering v Yeovil game in the 1974/75 season)just a matter of time now. What has surprised me is the fine job Gary Johnson has done at Yeovil because he was tactically bloody awful at Kettering and set us back 5 years.
I watch the mighty Dover Athletic. Come on you whites!

Another good crowd at Yeovil, thought it would have been low considering it's just before Christmas.
I understand what you mean urruri about Gary Johnson. A few people were saying the same when he joined. He seems very good at spotting ability/potential in players. Look at our top scorer last season, Adam Stansfield. We got him from Elmore who are 3 leagues lower than us. Unfortunately he broke his leg in the first game this season and is still a few months away from playing, unlikely to be this season.
Everyone done their christmas shopping in Yeovil then!Fantastic gate yesterday considering it's the last saturday before christmas. How's Carl Alford doing at Yeovil at the moment Fat Bloke?
I keep an eye out for Worcester City's results, usually they're pretty poor, but they're winning games hand over fist at the moment - and they're moving to a new 7000 all seater stadium, a tad optimistic I think but never mind!

urruri, Since Yeovil have played at Huish Park this year our average gate is 4,797 (we played 5 'home' games at Dorchester). I think last year it was around 3,000.
Carl Alford has done OK since he joined, including scoring in the FA Trophy Final last year. But he has been told his contract will not be renewed in the summer and he can leave now if he likes. I think it's got a lot to do with his build, he's never been the smallest of blokes has he, this year especially Yeovil like to play fast flowing football. Which just isn't Carl.
He's a good bloke so if/when he leave I hope he can do well somewhere.

I know what you mean about his build Fat Bloke. We are still in short supply of pies in Kettering because of Carl!.He's a decent geezer. He used to lodge with my friends parents so I got to know him reasonably well.Heard also that Droylsden in the NPL are close to signing him(his hometown club apparantly). What is Yeovil's nearest league club as a matter of interest?
Fat Bloke
23-12-2002, 18:49
My sister is Carl's Girlfriends boss. So have had a couple things signed for historical reasons :) .
Yeah Droylsden, Stevenage and Northwich are a few clubs being linked with Carl. But he will be on a good wage here and is contracted up untill June/July plus he likes the area. So not sure if he will leave before the summer.
Yeovil's location helps with the attendences to be honest. Nearest clubs being Exeter (50 Miles), Both Bristol Clubs (40 Miles) and Bournemouth (45 Miles). Nearest Premiership club is Southampton who are 75ish miles and are abit of a knightmare to get tickets for.
It's also a bit of a downer with no local derbies in the league. Forest Green who we play Boxing Day and New Years Day are 80 miles away! After that it's Hereford, Woking or Farnborough all of which are 100 odd miles away
EDIT Oh, forgot to mention on the subject of Carl's build if you haven't seen his goal in the Trophy Final it was an overhead kick.
:notworthy
Yes I saw his goal against Stevenage in the Trophy Final.Excellent goal.Carl has always had a funny habit of scoring against his former teams. On the subject of local derbies wasn't Bath City(until they got relegated to the DMPL)usually a grudge match with big crowds?

Both Bath City and Weymouth are close teams and the local rivals. Both are in the league below now. Bath City seem to hate Yeovil, but Yeovil have no real problem with them. Weymouth were always the rival team in the proper sense of rivals and the grudge matches that go with it.

When we played Weymouth last season at their place there was quite a bit of trouble. Both sets of fans to blame to be honest. What I noticed from quite a few Weymouth fans(on the message boards) is that they had an awful chip on their shoulders directed at us.Hated us with a passion towards the end of the season. Not sure if it was because of the trouble at the Wessex Stadium or because we won the league at the first attempt.Best rival supporters we found last season was Tiverton.Looks like we are going back to the DMPL unfortunately.:(

I went to the FA cup game against Dagenham and Redbridge...we did OK, scored too early, and then panicked when Mark Stein came on as sub. Crawley are going to struggle big time if they ever go up! (Apperently they have been given 5 years to go up, and they are in year 3 at the moment, otherwise monies will stop!)
Fear is doing OK, I don't really watch them enough to give a thoruogh response....i'm too busy going to see the mighty Arsenal!
i will be watching my beloved Bristol Rovers next year in the conference.. 23rd last year.. we will be lucky to finish 24th this year.

Kettering won't be playing Rovers next season anyway because we will be in the DMPL!We've got some great memories at beating Bristol Rovers in the F.A. Cup.You had a decent team then as well.Martyn in goal,Penrice,White and Gerry Francis in charge. We played City at Ashton Gate three seasons ago in the Cup and lost 3-1,impressive stadium. What's the Memorial Stadium like?Better or worse than Eastville Ground.

Absolute nightmare! We had a chance just before the first goal, then FGR cross the ball on their left and the Yeovil right back ducks to let it pass and Terry Skiverton (Yeovil Captain) slides in for an own goal. The guy playing right back gets subbed 2 minutes later, so the manager obviously saw the duck as well.
To be completely honest Forest Green looked 10 times more up for the game
I did see Wayne Turner had been sacked from Cheatenage (Stevenage for those not in the know). Did you hear about him selling Sigere? Turned down an offer from Margate for £10,000 and then 3 weeks later sells him to Margate for £7,500

Don't think I've seen such a negative side as Barnet today! 11 behind the ball, timewasting from as early as the 1st minute and a spineless ref who let them do it :nono:
We need a couple strikers and soon.

We played Barnet a couple of months ago at home and lost 2-1.They scored the winner in injury time. They time wasted and caused niggly fouls all throughout the match. They were very fortunate to beat us that day,we deserved at least a draw.I suppose Shreeves is trying to make them intimadating and frustrate sides and it certaintly worked against us.Awful team to play against. We picked up a crucial point away at Margate today.Well chuffed about that.

Yeah I saw it on the ciderspace forum just a few minutes ago.A bit of surprise really considering you're struggling for strikers. What's happened to Demba?
Fat Bloke
28-12-2002, 20:50
Yeah, but like I said the other day Carl just hasn't got the pace these days. TBH, I'm surprised he hasn't been used abit more, but saying that when he has played he unfortunately hasn't done a lot. Apparently he's (Carl that is) going to be joining Nuneaton.
Demba seems to have gone. Not a great deal coming from the club about him at the moment. He came here with his Wife from Belgium and apparently she couldn't settle here and has gone back. The rumours are he has had to wait for the transfer window, which starts in January, to be able to move back to Belgium.
But with 2 strikers gone/going hopefully that means that a BIG name will be coming in (pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeease)
Now and again I go to see my local team play:Northwich Victoria

I saw Northwich v Yeovil the other week. Do you know what's happening with The Drill Field? If I've got it right it's the oldest football ground in the world isn't it?

Yes it is (Was)
They are supposed to be building houses on the land next year (but ATM planning permission has been denied)

What does that mean for the football club? Continue to ground share with Witton or a new ground to be built but have to wait for the planning permission to get the money from the old ground...
heyhey! another stevenage fan here... been supporting them since 94... and boy this is the worst year yet.
not seen them play at home in a long time, as i live a good 70 miles away from the lovely town.... good result against farnborough, although we're still propping up the table. have stevenage been linked in any groundshare proposals of late? i heard fulham might be heading there at one point....
GOOD NEWS ON PFANNENSTIEL
The UniBond League Premier Division's Boxing Day action between Bradford Park Avenue and Harrogate Town that almost ended in tragedy when Avenue’s German ‘keeper Lutz Pfannenstiel was injured in attempting to stop Paul Sykes’ 29th minute goal has ended with some good news.
Pfannenstiel twice stopped breathing and was saved by being given the “kiss of life” before being rushed to hospital. The match was immediately abandoned with Avenue announcing that all spectators will be admitted free to the re-arranged game.
Pfannenstiel was remarkably released from hospital having been diagnosed as receiving a kick the sternum which resulted in the same effect as a punctured lung causing the loss of oxygen in the lungs.
I read about that in my paper good to hear that he has recovered well enough to leave hospital.

SUPPORTERS BID TO BUY CLUB - 27/12/2002
Cash-strapped Nationwide Conference strugglers Kettering Town have received a bid for the club by its own supporters.
The club, which was put up for sale by chairman Peter Mallinger in October, have received an offer by the Kettering Town Supporters Trust.
Trust chairman Derrick Smith said: " We have offered what we consider to be a substantial sum for the football club, but this, of course, is subject to certain conditions being met.
"We have no ill feelings towards Peter Mallinger. In fact, the contrary is true as we appreciate everything he has done over the years for the good of the club. But we're merely following the groundswell of public opinion by making our interest known."
The Trust, with a membership of over 300 and growing daily, recently purchased the Kettering Town Football Club Limited title which had laid dormant after Mallinger opened a new company a few seasons back.
"This is just the first step," Smith continued. "We will be opening this to every fan and invite them to become involved in buying a share in their club."
We now have got 322 members. The trust is gathering some momemtum now.Forza Kettering Town and survival.

"From the Sunday Telegraph - the truth behind the Cheats"
Wondering what the Cheats (Boston) actually did to cheat? This will make your eyes pop out!
Seedy truth that lies behind the shaming of a football club
By Simon Hart (Filed: 29/12/2002)
It was just like a reunion. One morning in May, seven retired detectives from Barnsley gathered at the Moat House Hotel on the outskirts of Doncaster. One of them joked that it was like the return of the magnificent seven.
But this was no social gathering. Among their number was Graham Bean, a man with 20 years' service under his belt with South Yorkshire Police but who, since 1998, has enforced discipline in the national game as head of the Football Association's compliance unit. Bean handed out briefing documents and gave his former colleagues their instructions before the men dispersed.
At exactly 10am on May 23, Bean, accompanied by FA financial expert Jamie McGraw, arrived unannounced at Boston United FC, the Lincolnshire club who just a few weeks earlier had completed a remarkable rise through the non-League ranks by winning promotion to the Football League.
Simultaneously, the other former CID officers knocked at the doors of a number of Boston players. It was the start of an investigation that would lead to some of the most serious charges brought by English football's governing body, a case that would lead to allegations of deception and bribery. Bean describes it as a story "to make your hairs stand on end".
Bean and his colleagues knew what they were looking for. A routine inspection of the club's accounts earlier in the year by the FA's financial advisory unit had uncovered unexplained discrepancies between the salaries declared on players' contracts and the payments they were receiving from the club.
The FA have strict rules which stipulate that all salaries must be notified to Soho Square in the interests of financial transparency, and any infringement can carry heavy penalties. "It's all about protecting the fairness and integrity of the competition," Bean said. "We don't want a situation where players are lured to clubs by cash-in-hand payments."
While the retired detectives interviewed players, Bean and McGraw went through the club's books. What they found shocked them. Far from the occasional irregular payment, it was apparent there was a systematic deception involving large amounts of cash being ferried around town to various banks and being paid over the counter into players' accounts.
Mike Marsh, the former Liverpool and West Ham player, was one of six footballers whose contract lodged with the FA bore no relation to what he was being paid. Instead of £100 a week, as the contract stated, he was actually receiving £1,000.
Another was striker Ken Charlery, who was being paid £620 a week plus bonuses yet his contract showed a basic weekly wage of £120. And there was Scottish midfielder Jim Dick, who was supposed to be paid £250 a week but was receiving £2,400 a month. Similar discrepancies were found in the contracts of three other players - Paul Wilson, Simon Weatherstone and goalkeeper Paul Bastock, the son-in-law of the club director and former chairman Pat Malkinson.
By coincidence, Malkinson was present at the club at the time of the FA raid, along with club secretary John Blackwell. The pair were asked about the irregularities but could offer no explanation, though they revealed that all player contracts were sorted out personally by the team manager, Steve Evans.
Five days later, FA officials returned to interview Evans, a 40-year-old Glaswegian. Evans dismissed the financial irregularities as sloppy administration - he claimed a zero had inadvertently been left off the Marsh contract and that Charlery was being paid extra for scouting duties - but the investigators were not persuaded.
They later learned that Evans would routinely write out a contract for a footballer, which the player signed, and he would then ask the player to sign two other blank contracts, saying he would fill them out later to save time. The suspicion was that the two blank contracts were then filled out with lower figures without the players' knowledge. These were then passed to Blackwell, an innocent party in the deception, who retained one of them and lodged the other with the FA.
The day after interviewing Evans, Bean and his colleague met Charlery. The striker confirmed that his copy of his contract was nothing like the one held by the club and the FA and that far from receiving £120 a week, his deal was for £620 a week, plus a £16,000 signing-on fee, £120 a week appearance money and a £50 bonus for every first-team goal.
Charlery also revealed that Evans had phoned him the previous day to tell him how he had come up with an explanation about "scouting payments". The player was out of contract and, in exchange for deceiving the FA by corroborating his story, Evans offered to help him with his future playing career. Evans was now in the frame for deliberately trying to impede the FA's inquiry. The plot was starting to thicken.
On June 5, Bean flew to Glasgow to meet Dick, another Boston player whose contract had recently ended. The midfielder had been a first-team regular but had been given permission to live and train in Scotland before travelling down to Lincolnshire the day before a game. Questioned about discrepancies over the player's contract, Evans claimed Dick received extra money to offset travel expenses, though the investigators established the player was separately reimbursed.
Within minutes of landing at Glasgow Airport, Bean received a call on his mobile phone. It was Dick, sounding distressed.
"He was really panicking," Bean recalls. "He was whispering and it sounded if he was calling from some sort of toilet area. He said to me: 'Look, there's someone going to be coming with me to our meeting. Whatever you do, don't let him into the meeting. I don't care what explanation you give him, but just don't let him in'. I asked him who the person was and he replied: 'I don't know, but he's a big lad. I'll explain everything later'."
When Bean arrived at the appointed meeting place, an airport hotel, Dick was accompanied by a "massive bloke" in his early thirties. Bizarrely, Dick was under instructions to introduce him as his brother. "The bloke bore no resemblance to Dick," Bean says. "Jim Dick is a skinny lad and this bloke looked like a typical heavy."
As agreed, Bean announced that the meeting with the player was strictly private and, despite the man's protests, ushered Dick into a private room. Once they were alone, Dick revealed he had had telephone conversations with Evans and Malkinson the previous day and that he had been offered £8,000. A contact of Evans had later turned up at his home with an envelope stuffed full of cash. Dick told Bean how the Boston manager had arranged for the "cash transfer" personally, driving north before handing the money over to the contact in a pub car park halfway between Lincolnshire and Scotland. Evans took the cash but was told that someone would be sent to accompany him at his meeting with Bean.
As the investigators closed in, Malkinson admitted authorising the £8,000 payment but maintained it was part of Dick's severance deal. After initially denying it, Evans also confirmed his involvement in the payment but dropped another bombshell by making some highly personal remarks about Dick. The tactic was to backfire. When Dick was told what Evans had said about him, he was so incensed that he immediately agreed to give evidence at a hearing against his former boss.
In July, at an FA disciplinary hearing chaired by Kent FA representative Barry Bright, Boston pleaded guilty to six charges relating to contract irregularities. They were fined £100,000 and started the season with a four points deduction.
Charges were also brought against Evans and Malkinson and last week the two men were notified of the hearing's findings. Malkinson was found guilty of one charge of breaching FA rules over the lodging of player contracts and another of trying to impede the FA inquiry by authorising a payment of £8,0000 to Dick. Evans, who pleaded guilty to four charges of contract irregularities, was also found guilty of trying to pay Dick to mislead the inquiry and of trying to influence Charlery to do likewise. Two less serious charges relating to contract irregularities were dismissed.
Both men will discover their punishments on Jan 29 and could face hefty fines and lengthy bans from the game. Evans, who has indicated he will appeal, is already paying a high price. He was suspended by his club pending the investigation and in September he resigned. His dream of managing a Football League club was not fulfilled.
"The sad thing about this whole story," Bean said, "is that at the greatest moment in Boston's history, one man did so much to damage the club's reputation. In everything that went wrong at the club, Steve Evans was the common denominator."
:nono:
:shocker:
He is lucky not to be facing police charges as well. He should never again be allowed to manage or have anything to do with any football club at an level in the game.

Still gets me that the clubs points deduction was from this season rather than last season when the offences occured. Which would have meant that they wouldn't have been promoted. Also wouldn't have been allowed in the Conference as they can refuse clubs that have been found guilty of financial irregularities.
Oh well, can just hope like Alan says that Evans will be kicked out of football if not for good then for a very long time.
Very interesting article that Fat Bloke from The Sunday Telegraph.Personally I thought Boston should have been relegated to the DMPL and Dagenham be allowed into the football league as champions. The F.A. haven't got any balls IMO.always been the same with them whoever it is in charge. This Bostongate drama has left a very bitter taste with everyone.I agree with Alan that Evans should never be allowed to manage or have anything else to do with football again.

Clubs clamour to support call for structural change
By Walter Gammie
JOHN MOULES was not saying how many but indicated that clubs from the premier divisions of the three feeder leagues were flocking to support the Nationwide Conference’s proposal to establish either a second Conference division or separate north and south divisions next season.
“When you consider that the invitations were sent out on the day before Christmas Eve, I can only say that I have been truly surprised by the numbers of letters I have received in such a short space of time in return as well as the phone calls to say that letters would be on their way,” the Conference chief executive said.
Moules did reveal that numbers were already sufficient to set up a second 22-team division and on their way to fulfilling the regional option.
The Conference’s proposed rule changes must be accepted next month by the FA’s sanctions and registrations committee and then be referred to the National Leagues System — although the FA Council will be the ultimate body to sit in judgment. One of the selling points for the feeder clubs is the promise of two-up, two-down from the regional leagues, decided on play-offs.
The approach of Basingstoke Town, the Ryman League club, is complicated by a change of ownership that is in process but Ernie Howe, in his tenth season as manager, said: “I think it’s possibly a way forward. I think something has to change. I believe the bigger clubs in the three leagues up to the Conference would welcome something like this, personally. One promotion spot to the Conference from each league is hardly satisfactory.”
Dennis Strudwick, the secretary of the Dr Martens League, said: “Our clubs are under greater threat than the others. Our clubs already play in a semi-national league, the others are in semi-regional leagues, so our clubs are already playing above that status anyway. We’d agreed earlier in the year to two divisions provided the Southern League retained its position as the one in the south, but when the FA decided to go with three leagues, the Conference chairman told us to stick with that. So we’re confused.”
Strudwick said that clubs might fear being left behind by any change but says that they have only until January 1 to resign from the Dr Martens League and risk being left in limbo if a new Conference does not happen. “I don’t understand how the FA would allow the season to start under one set of rules then change it mid-season,” he said.

Good crowd again (4,692), especially as alot of people might have thought it was going to be called off. Including one guy who shouted to tell us it was off as we walked to the game  .
Nice to see Chester lose after we lost on Boxing Day. But I've said it before and I'll say it again. There will be lots of twists and turns before the season is over.
Urruri, when was your game called off? Had you left to travel there or was it whie you were still at hoom?

We had just got into Stevenage(the weather was appalling to be honest) at 2.20 when one of my friends who was at the ground already rang me to tell me that the game had been called off due to a waterlogged pitch.Referee had called the match off a 2.00 apparantly.Turned round and came straight back.Shame really as I was really looking forward to the game today. Now to be rescheduled later in the season. No date confirmed yet.
Another fantastic crowd for you guys again Fat Bloke good result as well. What was the weather like down there?Does your pitch drain well?.
Guess what,we play Chester at home on saturday.Oh well you never know, they might be in a slump right now(here's hoping).

We weren't good enough on the day.Chester hardly troubled us to be honest and Clare scored with the only chance he had all afternoon.Have to say that Chester looked very solid at the back and gritty in mid-field but didn't look like a championship winning side to me.

Glad to see another Yeovil win, despite letting one in after one minute. Good to see little Andy Lindegaard get a hat-trick.
Did you give Mark Wright plenty of abuse

Farnborough get the Arse at home in the FA Cup.
If I was a Farnborough fan I'd want to play the tie at home. Yeovil did this when we got Arsenal in the Third round a few years back (1992?).

I remember watching the highlights between Yeovil and Arsenal on Match of the Day.Didn't Arse win 3-0 that day? What was the attendance for that game, over 9,000?
I too think Farnborough should play the match at Cherrywood Road, that's the magic of the Cup after all.As a non-league team you can only dream of playing the big boys so what a fantastic draw this is for them.
Best of luck to Farnborough and Dagenham(I've a feeling they will beat Plymouth in the reply).
Which of this games on saturday are going to end up with conf teams getting knocked out by lower league oppostion or another conf side(bearing in mind most of the top half want out anyway!)

I can see Vauxhall Motors getting a result. They just need to get themselves up to the level they played in the FA Cup.
Not sure about any other shocks. But there will be some.
Not at all bothered by it this year. Absolutly fantasic last year to win it, especially after being 3:0 down away at Doncaster in the 4th round. Best footballing day of my life so far
BUT this year we can go out either in the 3rd or the 4th round. That way no conference games have to be rearrange later in the season. Concentrate on promotion please.
I see that Scarborough are going to go into administration.

NOW YAXLEY TRY FOR GAZZA - 09/01/2003
Eagle Bitter United Counties League club Yaxley's audacious bid to sign former England star Paul Gascoigne has ended with a rebuff, just as Albany Northern League Morpeth Town's earlier pursuit of Gazza ended in failure.
New Cuckoos boss Jimmy Watson contacted the PFA to get a number for Gazza's advisers and left a message with the player's best pal Jimmy 'Five Bellies' Gardner offering Gascoigne a short-term deal at Leading Drove.
On Monday, however, Watson took a call from Gazza's adviser, Wes Saunders, declining the opportunity to join Yaxley, as Gascoigne was considering opportunities to join professional clubs at home and abroad.
Watson stressed that the approach to Gascoigne had been a serious one, giving the player the opportunity of obtaining match fitness while considering his options to return to the full-time game. While the signing, if successful, would have raised Yaxley's profile, it would, Watson pointed out, also have improved his team!
The league's December Manager of the Month awards have been won by two managers new to the UCL circuit this season. Northampton Spencer boss Bob Tansley won the Premier Division award after steering his young team to four wins in five December matches while the Division One prize went to Dick Newman of Potton United, whose side collected 13 points from five matches without conceding a goal. The Goalscorer of the Month award went to Vince Petty of Eynesbury Rovers, who scored six times in three December matches after moving from Wisbech.
Division One strugglers Burton Park Wanderers have handed 30-year-old player Jason Thurland the managerial reins. He takes over from Latimer Park stalwart Bo Patrick, who can now concentrate on his duties as chairman, secretary and general manager.
Thurland joined Burton as a player two years ago, having previously seen service with Rothwell Town, Desborough, Thrapston and Sharnbrook.
St Neots Town have unveiled a new management team for their reserve side. Former second string boss Dominic McCormack returns for a second spell at the helm, working in tandem with Paul 'Nipper' Hancock who enjoyed great success with Sunday outfit Little Paxton, who have dominated the St Neots Sunday League in recent seasons while building a reputation nationally in the FA Sunday Cup.

Uurri, The first home game was the biggest with 4300 and 1500 turned away, since then we have averaged about 3400 at Kingstonian. We are moving back to Merton next season when we groundshare with Tooting and Mitcham at Imperial Fields so I think the crowds will hopefully increase. Things are great we're loving it at the moment.

Urruri, I personally don't know anyone who still watches the Franchise. All my friends are AFC season ticket holders. Thanks for the support to. It's funny being back in Non-League after all these years. It's gr8 fun though and we're really enjoying it. The problem is all the other teams raise the're games when they play us, it's like we're the Man U of the CCL, which does put a lot of pressure on the players. At the moment we're famous for going 2 nil down adn then winning 2-3, 2-4, 2-5!!! it's mad, and the referees, are on the whole awful, apart from a young 16yr old called Stephen Cooke who is excellent and I'm sure will be a league ref in a few years time.

Fat Bloke, we don't seem to have a clear idea what the promotion situation is at the moment. It seems to count on whether your ground meets Ryman requirements. We are ok, as we share with Kingstonian and maybe sharing with Tooting & Mitcham next season. AFC Wallingford need to do work which is wht they didn't go up last season. Withdean 2000 who I personally think r the best team in the league play at the Withdean Stadium with Brighton and also share with Worthing. Wallingford are streaking ahead at the mo, but Withdean are the better team. We just need to keep winning to be in with a shout. I also understand that the Non-Leagues are being restructured in the close season so I just don't know where we'll be next season. But to answer your question it's 1 up dependent on your ground.

JAMIE POLLOCK APPOINTED AS NEW BOSS AT SPENNYMOOR
UniBond League First Division club Spennymoor United have appointed Jamie Pollock as Tony Lee's replacement, taking charge of team affairs with immediate effect for Saturday's game against North Ferriby United at The Brewery Field.
Pollock was born in Stockton-on-Tees and signed professionally for Middlesbrough in December 1991.
He recently announced his retirement from the full-time game after training with Grimsby and coaching some of the younger players at the club.
He gained recognition as an England under-21 international, and served as a player and captain at Middlesbrough and Manchester City, where he helped both teams gain promotion to the Premiership.
His career, which attracted fees of over £3million also took him to Osasuna, Bolton Wanderers and Crystal Palace where he left by mutual consent last season.
It is not yet known whether Pollock will eventually register as a player and play for The Moors.
The news quashes the recent speculation of a reconciliation between the club and previous manager, Tony Lee.

SLADE TO STAY(20/01/2003)
Scarborough FC announced this morning that its manager, Russell Slade, has asked the Club to reconsider his resignation.
Slade had tendered his resignation last week following the considerable uncertainty that ensues from a company going into administration. Following talks with Boro’s Chairman Malcolm Reynolds, Slade asked if he could withdraw his resignation. The Club was happy to oblige.
Reynolds said “Following lengthy discussions between Russell Slade and myself on Friday evening and Saturday morning, Russell decided to reconsider his decision of Thursday last week to resign.
“The speed of events last week, in what was a very difficult time for the Club, resulted in certain matters not being properly clarified. A detailed explanation, along with other mutual agreements, has resulted in Russell withdrawing his resignation.
“I am glad that we have been able to clear up some of Russell’s doubts following the club’s move into administration.
“The last few weeks have been traumatic for all concerned. However we now have the Administrator in place. More critically the Administrator has secured funds in place to take the Club through to the end of the season and this should offer considerable reassurance to the playing staff.
“We can now put this unfortunate situation behind us and concentrate on preparing for Saturday’s home match against Chester City.”
Slade said “We have been together here for 15 months and that has been a good time.
“I was moved by the action of the fans at the end of the Dagenham game, when they handed me a petition.
"That choked me I have to say, with people showing their faith in me and the team. They have been very good to me whilst I have been here.”
Reynolds added: Saturday’s game against Chester City is a vital one for the club. We should like to put the events of the last few days behind us and concentrate on the push for promotion to the Football League.
“This remains the common objective of Russell, myself and everyone at the Club.”

Very surprising news really because he looked very average for us last season.Great move for him though.
FAIRCLOUGH FOR ENGLAND - 22/01/2003
Former Stevenage Borough boss, Paul Fairclough, has been appointed as the new man in charge of the National Game XI, better known as the England semi-professional team.
The Football Association made the appointment following John Owens decision to stand down last year, since when his assistant, Steve Avory, has been in charge. Avory, I understand, will remain in the managerial team.
Fairclough has been out of the limelight since being dismissed from his second spell in charge of Stevenage during last season when he was succeeded by Wayne Turner.
The 53-year-old Liverpudlian previously guided Boro during the most successful period in their history between 1990 and 1999 when they rose from the ranks of Division Two of the Ryman League to the Nationwide Conference championship in 1996, being denied promotion, of course, due to their Broadhall Way ground being deemed as unsuitable.
His arrival at Soho Square was not altogether unexpected and he is certainly one of the most respected managers on the non-League scene.

AFC won 3-0 in the Cherry Red Records Trophy last night
Our season is just about finished,Fat Bloke.Apart from being a very poor side now we've too many off the field problems to be truthful(no money, club up for sale, don't own our ground, players wages slashed, players only getting £60 for away matches, training cut to once a week.To be honest if we sacked Carl Shutt whoever he was replaced by would have a near impossible job trying to keep us up.Too much dead wood at the club.Time for a clearout, bring in the kids(the under 12's would do a better job!).DMPL what a bloody horrible thought again.I really didn't think we'd be in this position after winning the DMPL at the first attempt last season but unfortunatly our financial crisis had put paid to any chance of consolidation we were hoping for in the conference for this season.

3 points then urruri. Is this the start of your revival?
Bit of a wobble for Yeovil yesterday. More rumours that Mcdougal from Dagenham is on his way. Rumour is that they wouldn't sell him while still in the FA Cup. I'll wait andsee before I believe any of it.

Yes here's the Press Releases.
Farnborough have issued this press release:
'PRESS RELEASE 28 January 2003
Farnborough Town has announced the end of an era following the departure of Graham Westley. Speculation has been rife for months that Westley would be leaving the club to concentrate solely on football management duties as he seeks to rise up the managerial ladder.
Several players and many of the backroom team are expected to follow their manager out of Cherrywood Road with there being strong suggestions that Westley will be appointed to manage Stevenage Borough into the Football League.
Graham Westley joined the club in 1999 when it was facing closure with huge six figure debts and won the Ryman League Cup 2000, Ryman League Championship 2001, Ryman Charity Shield 2001 and BBC Non League Team 2002 before guiding the club to its most glorious hour this last weekend at Highbury in the FA Cup 4th round. It is hoped that the club will finally be able to clear its debts when receipts from the 4th round are finalised and the club is in the FA Trophy 4th round and well poised to attack this season's play off places as he departs.
Graham Westley made this statement ;
'I've enjoyed my time at Farnborough but I feel that I need to move on now and that I need to concentrate on football management which is where my ambitions lie. Doing two jobs is unrealistic at this level and above. Especially when you run another business too. I've invested much of my life into my dual role at the club in the last three and a half years and I hope that the successes which have come about have made the fans happy and have earned me some respect. When I arrived in 1999, the club was on its knees.
As I depart, I believe that the club is in fantastic condition relative to the starting point. It has won things, enjoyed the highs of the Cup 4th round, should finally be close to being debt and liability free and has a great chance of pushing for the play offs. With a strong local leader, it may even be able to convert the current board's spadework into a new ground in the next few years.
As soon as it is practicable, unless a better solution emerges for the club, it is currently my intention to gift the shares that I own to the other existing shareholders (the club's fans) and leave the club to build on the foundations which have been laid. I hope that everybody will be able to recognise the footballing goodwill in this'.
Vince Williams, currently the Football Secretary has agreed to act as interim General Manager although he is said to be considering his own long term future. He commented, “This is a sad day for the club, I for one, appreciate the efforts and success that GW has brought to the club. I believe that Graham is leaving the club in a most honourable way, the club is in a much healthier state following his leadership”.
Westley’s final words were directed towards Williams.
“Many reporters wrongly damned Vince after I explained the weaknesses in our infrastructure and in his experience in relation to the Arsenal game. But let me leave nobody in any doubt; he has been a fantastic servant to me. His hard work, professionalism and flexibility have been vital ingredients and I wouldn’t hesitate to employ him again”.
Ends.

Stevenage press release:
Stevenage Borough Football Club - Press Release
Stevenage Borough have confirmed the appointment this afternoon of Farnborough Town's Graham Westley as their new Manager. 34 year old Westley resigned his post at
Farnborough this morning, just days after leading them out at Highbury in a memorable FA Cup 4th round tie against Arsenal.
Westley has managed for 6 years and has built a remarkable track record in his 3 and a half years at Farnborough. He won the Ryman League Cup in his first year at the club, created a Ryman record of 16 consecutive wins and earned the Ryman League Championship in his second. He steered the part time club to 7th place in the Conference at the first attempt and has led them to the fringe of the play offs this season, alongside a successful FA cup campaign culminating in a 4th round tie against mighty Arsenal.
Stevenage Chairman Phil Wallace told Boro WebNews;
'We have a serious battle on our hands and we need a strong willed, no nonsense manager who relishes a challenge, can win that battle and then turn us into championship challengers next season. I've always been impressed with Graham's leadership,
directness and fierce ambition and have kept an eye on his progress for some while. He's achieved success at Farnborough without the support of an established full time infrastructure, such as we have here and with the distraction of also having to work as a board member. As well as managing the team, he's obviously had to deal with the non-football aspects of running a football club, something that I know he has not enjoyed. He's stated his ambition to become a top flight professional football manager and to do that he needs a structure from which to progress. Stevenage have a burning ambition to be a Football League club and already have the structure in place so our
goal is to achieve our ambitions together with Graham heading up the football product whilst I, along with my board, drive forward the commercial and business side''
''To be frank, watching our football team struggle in the Conference for 3 seasons while everything off the pitch has flourished is heart breaking. Our off-pitch revenues, activities and facilities outstrip their targets year after year and continue to improve even with falling gates, but this is a football club - we just can't go on being successful commercially with mediocre results on the pitch. Stevenage is a big club, with big potential and it's about time we had a young, ambitious, experienced
manager who has Conference experience, can drive us forwards and make us proud of our results on the pitch. Graham can do that. I knew there were restrictions on him at Farnborough which meant that he would have to leave if he wants to achieve his
managerial goals, but that didn't stop us from head hunting him. It's not been easy to persuade him to leave the formidable team he is building at Farnborough, especially in view of their FA cup success, but I believe he can unlock our on-field potential and
that together we can achieve success for Stevenage Borough on and off the pitch. Graham joins us in a first team managerial role, with no board involvement or equity interest whatsoever. We've agreed a 3 year contract during which time I have tasked him with delivering Football League status. He has attracted high quality players previously and forged them into formidable teams. I expect him to do the same here and I hope he can do it quickly to get us away from the threat of relegation. He is a very capable, motivated manager who knows where he's going and only cares about winning. I have a very similar outlook on running the business side of the football club so it should hopefully make for a dynamic partnership. If Graham is successful and leaves us after 3 years for better things with us in the 2nd or 3rd division, I won't be complaining and neither will our fans. Our joint agenda is therefore clear and we both know the game plan''
Commenting on the replacement of caretaker team John Dreyer and David Preece, Wallace said
''Both John and David have done a great job for us and have the boards' utmost admiration for their professionalism. However, I did say that I would only disturb that partnership for something significant and this appointment is certainly that. The capture of a young, proven manager with his best years in front of him, together with his backroom team, will have the financial support of our board over the coming months and years. Our first priority now is to strengthen the team immediately and achieve the
most important task facing us today - safeguarding our Conference status''
A PRESS CONFERENCE WILL BE HELD IN THE BROADHALL SUITE, STEVENAGE, AT 9AM SHARP ON WEDNESDAY 29TH JANUARY. PHIL WALLACE AND GRAHAM WESTLEY WILL BOTH BE PRESENT.
WALSH IS THE NEW BOSS AT SOUTHPORT - 29/01/2003
Nationwide Conference club Southport have appointed former Bury boss Mickey Walsh as their new manager.
In charge at Gigg Lane between 1990-95, Walsh was initially lined up to come in as caretaker-manager following the departure of Phil Wilson.
However, he has now been handed the job for the remainder of the season with a view to a long-term appointment after impressing 'Port chairman Charlie Clapham.
The 46-year-old former Republic of Ireland international, who played for Bolton, Everton, Manchester City and Blackpool player will work in a full-time capacity at Haig Avenue.
He is being assisted by UEFA Badge coaches Brett Harris and former Blackpool midfielder Tony Rodwell with Walsh's first game in charge being the FA Trophy tie at Dagenham & Redbridge on Saturday.
Walsh has also held coaching posts at Blackpool and Swindon Town and was European scout for Sunderland under Peter Reid.

Radio Lincolnshire are carrying this story:
"The FA hearing to decide the punishment of the former Boston United manager Steve Evans has ended. It marks the end of an eight month investigation into contract irregularities at the club. It's yet to be confirmed by the FA, but BBC Radio Lincolnshire believe Evans has been banned from football for 20 months and fined £8,000. The Former Chairman, Pat Malkinson is thought to to have been fined around £7,000 and banned for 13 months from the game. The three man FA panel have so far refused to comment, along with Evans and the former Chairman Pat
Malkinson, who've now left the hearing in Birmingham.
This marks the end of an eight month investigation into events at Boston United, which began shortly after they won promotion to the Football League."

Johnson in double swoop
Yeovil Town have made a double swoop to boost their squad for the important run-in to the end of the season. Kevin Gall is expected to sign for Yeovil Town tomorrow (Tuesday) from Bristol Rovers and will play in a reserve match against Dorchester on Tuesday evening. Johnson said: "I am very pleased to have signed Kevin. He is a quick striker who will add extra strength to our squad."
Johnson has also swooped to take Jason Blunt from Scarborough on a month's loan with a view to a permanent deal in the future. "Like Kevin Jason will also give us added strength in the squad for the very important run-in to the end of the season. "Neither player is Cup tied for the Trophy and both have got terrific pedigrees."
Gall started his career at Newcastle before moving to Bristol Rovers where he was capped at under 21 level for Wales against Azerbaijan.
Jason Blunt started his career at Leeds United where he made 3
Premiership appearances before moving on loan to Raith Rovers in
Scotland, Blackpool and finally Scarborough. Blunt made 57 league
appearances for Scarborough where he scored 8 goals and eight in the F.A.Cup where he netted twice.
Yeovil Town will also be giving a trial to Dave Lee a midfield/striker
who started his career at Tottenham but has also been playing for
Luton, Southend and Brighton. He will be training with Yeovil for a
couple of days for manager Gary Johnson to have a closer look at him.
Yeovil have also announced that Tom White will be spending a month on loan with Woking. The move is designed to allow Tom to get valuable practice under his belt following his recent long injury absence.

One thing I've missed from this thread (i think) is the on going saga of the England Semi-Pro team. They are due to play Belgium next Tuesday in Ostend. First the conference clubs withdrew their players, then they said OK they can play. And now........
FA Press Release:
FAIRCLOUGH NAMES NEW SQUAD FOR BELGIAN TEST
Less than a week before the first National Game XI fixture of 2003, Manager Paul Fairclough has encountered a busy last 48 hours.
The first ever international against Belgium at this level had long
been scheduled and the date organised to coincide with international week, when no midweek league fixtures had been planned.
However, earlier this week, and after the inaugural squad under
Fairclough's reign had been named on the 30th January, the new England Manager has had to cope with the non-release of players, resulting in a new squad of 16 players being given the chance to represent the 3 Lions next week.
FA National Game Director Steve Parkin explained:
"The FA have long arranged with the Belgium FA to play an international fixture in Ostend, and we were determined to honour this agreement.
"It is a sad day for those Conference players who have been stopped from representing their country in Belgium next week, however, the disappointment of these players will contrast with the delight of those players that have been called into Paul F
