Now that is fantastic news.

There's no denying that for all of last years "take-it-or-leave-it" humdrum offerings (i.e. some diamonds hiding in a fair amount of rough) Criterion is banging out THE must have discs of 2003.

(well maybe with the exception of the "I Am Curious..." Series !

Too right! Apart from that bizarre anomaly, this year, no-one can touch Criterion!

Still - Peckinpah, Bresson, Brakhage, Siegel and Lubitsch all making their debuts in the collection within the first three months of the year can't be bad (Trouble in Paradise is a fabulous disc and an even better film). Plus visits from old friends like Jean-Luc Godard and Terry Gilliam are always nice to see.

This just in: http://www.dvdplanet.com/product_listing.asp?productid=30751&format=DVD

Just for that lovely compliment, here's one more - Roger Ebert is recording commentaries for Criterion's not-yet-announced disc of Ozu's Floating Weeds and Warner's SE re-release of Casablanca. :)

You missed one!

Janus Films and Cowboy Pictures are planning a theatrical re-release Ermanno Olmi's comedy classic, Il Posto. New 35mm prints of Il Posto debuted at New York's Film Forum in December and will continue to other cities in early 2003. Look also for a Criterion DVD of Il Posto in 2003.

At least I Am Curious Yellow is of considerable historical interest, even if it doesn't stand the test of time very well.

Incidentally, does anyone know how different Criterion's Doinel boxset will be from MK2's Doinel boxset?

These Criterion releases that simply repackage other, non-R1 discs are such a waste of effort IMHO. Most Truffaut fans will have already got the French versions of these films. Considering the number of classic films not on DVD anywhere, why do they persist in releasing slightly better versions of already available titles? I can understand that the majority of the US public hasn't imported the French Truffaut discs or the UK Straw Dogs disc (and so they can make money on them domestically) but from our point of view why bother?

It's not a waste of effort in the slightest; they aren't making them for the UK market - they're for the US R1 market, and since the vast, vast majority of American enthusiasts can't play PAL material (NTSC televisions simply aren't built to cope, it seems), I'm sure they'll all be very glad indeed to get pristine new anamorphic special editions.

Quick update - just had an email from JM who has confirmed that the 400 blows will only be available as part of this box set and will NOT be relased on it's own.
