View Full Version : Music Vids: Chris Cunningham, Michael Gondry and Spike Jonze SE DVDs
I was gonna post this in movie forum but thought it'd be better suited here for obvious reasons.
From DavisDVD: http://www.davisdvd.com/News/daily_news.htm#030103-1
A new directors' series of three DVDs from Palm Pictures will spotlight Jonze's past work and the music videos, commercials and short films that defined two other ground-breaking directors: Michel Gondry and Chris Cunningham. Launching in August, the discs will be packed with special features such as interviews, storyboards, alternate versions, documentaries and commentaries that will give special insight into the directors' styles. The Jonze disc will contain, among other things, music videos for the award-winning Fatboy Slim "Weapon of Choice," Bjork's "It’s Oh So Quiet," Weezer's "Buddy Holly," and the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage." All will also include artist commentaries.
Looks pretty superb to me, three fantastic directors with very different styles. I like the idea of director and artist commentaries so we can hear both views on the videos. Hopefully if these are successful they'll consider other directors.
I'd love to see Fincher have his own disc as i think some of his vids 'Madonna - Bad Girl', 'Michael Jackson - Who Is It' and 'A Perfect Circle - Judith' would make a perfect case study.
Any others you'd like to see? Hype Williams?, Jonothan Glazer etc?
Should be a good set.

Chris Cunnigham is a complete genius. If his dvd includes Bjork's 'All Is Full Of Love' then it will be worth the price alone! LOng wait til August though......grrrr
Gotta get me the Cunningham DVD
'All is Full of Love" is indeed an amazing video, although I have it on Volumen II, the documentary will be well worth the price IMO!
deffo after the Michel Gondry edition, but will prolly end up with them all - excellent idea and it's about time really.....
Superb!! Will also be getting all three! Cunningham is a genius - have you seen the Portishead vid where the woman is swimming but all traces of water have been removed so it just looks like she's moving...well, weirdly??? Excellent!
....and then there's his work with Aphex Twin! COME TO DADDY!!
Don't forget the Jackson-esque Windowlicker!

These sound great - anyone know when they're out?
August is the only rough date. I'm not sure how widely available these'll be either. Hopefully we shouldn't have much trouble finding them.
I'll try and rememver to bump this nearer the time although that's a long way off yet :D

Anyone see those half-hour shows that C4 did on video directors, including all the above and more?
yep, they were called Mirrorball (i think). Still got the Chris Cunningham one on VHS somewhere. They showed Come To Daddy, Squarepusher one, Madonna's 'Frozen', Portishead one, Windowlicker (full length) and Bjork's All is Full of Love (behind the scenes too. No Afrika Shox tho, although Cunningham has admitted he hates this video.
I seem to recall the Spike Jonze episode had him driving round in his car talking about the videos. Similar to the feature on the 'Being John Malkovich' dvd........although he didn't throw up.

Why? i love that video. i thought it was one of his best, nice and simple yet great visuals.

Yep, "Mirrorball" (I'm sure they were an hour long though?).
Incidentally, http://www.director-file.com/ has a lot of info on Chris Cunningham & Michel Gondry -- reading it has certainly whet my appetite for these discs ;)

I don't think he hated the visuals, so much as the position he had to work in. The basic problem was that Leftfield kept changing the music. Cunningham would initially start work (storyboarding or whatever) with one version of Afrika Shox and then a couple of weeks later Leftfield gave him a new remixed version, and apparently this process would carry on whilst shooting....much to the annoyance of Cunningham.
from DavisDVD again:
We first made mention of this many months ago, and now we can finally report new details on Palm Pictures' The Work of Director Spike Jonze. The DVD, due on August 26th, will be a collection of music videos, short films, and commercials from the distinctive filmmaker. The disc will also include a 52-page book full of never-before-seen photographs, storyboards, drawings and interviews, as well as the documentaries "Torrance Rises" (a look at the Torrance Dance Community's preparation and performance at the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards with Fatboy Slim), "Amarillo By Morning" (a documentary on Houston rodeo riders), and "What's Up Fatlip" (a short on the former Pharcyde member). Future releases in The Directors Label will include Chris Cunningham and Michel Gondry. Additional volumes in this ongoing series are slated for spring 2004.
No mention of commentaries by Jonze/artists, i hope that's just an oversight.

cool - sounds like a good package
Thanks for the update. Was just thinking about this thread the other day! 10 points for the first person to spot a pre-order ;)
Certainly worth a rent on the Jonze DVD. Isn't Gondry the one who did "Let forever be" ? That was class
Yeah, I think so - he also did a few Chem's vids I think. I lose track these days, but I'm sure M2 (back in the days!) showed the Directors name along with the track title when they showed a vid. It was very handy to learn a little more about those really good directors...

You can say that again, they used to be very handy especially when it came to recognising directors work and wanting to know if you were right or not. Even the Box used to list Directors names until they had their make-over.
I really wish the channels would get back into the habit of showing:
Artist
Title
Studio
Director
instead of all this fancy crap to pretty up the screen. :(
