Yet still we are no closer to getting it released, what is WRONG with these distributors, don't they like money ?
I want the Monster Squad on DVD, I demand it !
jroadley
31-12-2006, 11:46
And there are 13 minutes worth of unused footage because the studio didn't want it to run over 90 minutes (Remember the days when ALL films were 90 minutes!)
And I only just found out it was shot at 2.35:1 that will look stunning in HD !!!
I saw this recently and didn't think it was anywhere near as good as what I remembered from when I was much younger.
Shame about those screencaps from a certain point of view, look like an upscale and sadly cropped.

This NEEDS to be released.
I was hoping for ages that 'The Wizard' would be released and then it was (after being out in germany for ages as 'Joystick Heroes')
Then I got the 'Garbage Pail Kids' which is nowhere near as good as I remembered it.
Now I just need Monster Squad. The last time I watched my copy on VHS (about 2 years ago, before it gave up and died) It was still a fantastic, very enjoyable movie.
Come on Mr. Movie distibuters, release it!

It has been show in HD on US television so it could get HD-DVD release :dork:
Even though i've never seen the film this is great news indeed. I alwasy wanted to see this ever since I saw the video in the rental shop i was a kid.

So who has seen this movie recently then, does it still hold up? I haven't seen it in almost 20 years but remeber watching quite a few times as a kid and I used to love it back then.

Although I loved this film when I was younger when you compare it to similar genre movies (Lost Boys & The Goonies come to mind) it hasn;t aged well at all. A few classic one liners but I won;t be rushing out on release date to add to my collection.
I agree, I was disappointed when I re-saw this recently.

Least we get to see it again, I imagine it will be cheap as well
Wouldn't mind seeing this again/ Loved it for a short period in the late 80's.
I first checked it out because I was mad about "Ghostbusters" at the time, and the tag line was "You know who to call when you have ghosts but who do you call when you have Monsters".
I remember two scenes only. A cheesy sort of montage with a song containing the lyrics "Dance until your feet drop off". and a lad shooting wolfman with a shotgun.

I havent seen this since I was kid until just now, so not sure what was cut. I was only watching this intermittently, but I'm sure there was more swearing and that bit where Frankenstein is perving on the neighbour, was there originally some boob shots??

I think he meant when its shown on UK TV :)
I do remember some of the scarier bits were chopped, and I think the wolfman + nads bit was not the same, some editing and words changed :D small things, but it is unusual its shown so early on TV, last time it was on was late night where its ussually shown with slight edits.

Nah the film's really tame, no boobies, no real swearing, all kids stuff.
The film has been heavily editted down though, you really feel it when you revisit it as a film geek adult and can spot where obvious subplots have been cut out (presumably for pacing). The maritial problems of Sean's parents in particular have been chopped out, in one scene you can even see one of them had packed their bags and were moving out!

Ahhh :) it used to be on at least once a year when I was younger. I remember seeing it on ITV about 12 years ago at about 10.30 at night after the news and thinking even back then, nooo they cut that out :D and I wasnt into films as much as I am now, so to remember that must have been good for me :D
They seemed to stop showing it on UK TV about 8 years ago, I have never seen it being on TV in all that time :) it probibly has been, but at very late times maybe.
I am sure todays TV showing was the first time many younger people have seen it before :) shame they had to suffer such evil cropping :D

it was pretty ropey on telly yesterday, but better than our fuzzy pre-recorded vhs copy from the 80's, and it kept the missus occupied for a short while (and she noticed that some bits were cut to the extent that some action didn't make sense)

Movie still holds up well, just finished watching and enjoyed it as much as I did as a kid.
As for the transfer there does seem to be something strange going on here, it is very clean but there does seem to be some gohsting. Also the 5.1 mix is quite flat, I don't recal hearing the rears at all. It almost sounds like a stereo mix.

Do you mean like stepped edge when something moves? If so it's combing caused by an interlaced transfer.
Fans of this goofy little flick may like to know that Intrada are releasing a limited edition cd (3000 copies worldwide) of Bruce Broughton's score later in the year:
