Just wondering if anyone here stuck with the Ultimate Fighting Championship after the PPV on Sky last summer. The internet is a wonderful thing so i've managed to get the PPV's 2 days after they have taken place.
Since the one in London UFC 38 there has been UFC 39,40 and 41 which was end of February with UFC 42 set to take place on April 25th.
There are rumours that it may be coming back to Sky and maybe another event will be taking place over in the UK again before the year is out. I'd just be happy with PPV on SBO.
I've also gotten into Pride the Japanese equivalent of the UFC too which had a spectacular event last week. Infact my love for mixed martial arts is up there with football now! To think my interest started more out of the spectacle of it but now i watch it only for the SPORT.
Anyways below i have included a clip from the Pride 25 PPV in Japan last week. These two guys, Antonio Rodrigo 'Minotauro' Nogueira and Emilianenko Fedor are the top 2 heavyweights in the sport.

Tank Abbott and Ken Shamrock in it these days?
Must admit my knowledge of UFC and Pride is limited. I only know these two from their days with WCW and WWE respectively.

Yes they have brought both of them back recently kinda like a legends thing (old skool v new) to bring in the ppv buys and increase the popularity of the ufc.
Ken Shamrock returned last November and got his arse kicked by Tito Ortiz (LHW champ) at UFC 40: Vendetta.
Tank returned to the UFC for the first time in 4/5 years last month at UFC 41 and was submitted by Frank Mir (my fav fighter) in 45 seconds by toe hold.
Zuffa are trying to make Tank v Shamrock for UFC 43 in June.
How come your favourite fighter is Frank Mir? I thought everyone liked Sakuraba the most?
Just read that recent WWE recruit, Nathan Jones, used to be in Pride. He certainly looks tough enough!

I've only been into mma since the beginning of last year so far and Pride even less. I am slowly catching up with Pride though, gotta love those dvd rips.
Sakuraba is on a downward slope right now. He lost again at Pride 25 the other week, he was dominating up until getting knocked out though.
Mir is the future UFC Heavyweight Champion imo. Genki Sudo is also another of my favs, he is great fun to watch. Think of Naz but with the skills to back it up against the best out there.
Was Genki Sudo the guy that got that sweet choke on that English guy at the UFC in the Royal Albert hall? If it is then he's another of my favourites.

yup ;)
Gotta love that KO from that huge brit at the same event.
10secs KO OMG ;)

Yeah Sudo is completely bonkers but he is the real deal at the same time. I dont know how he pulls it off.
The Brits havent done too well since their great showings at UFC 38.
Ian Freeman was knocked out at UFC 40 in 90 seconds by a Andre Arlovski and has now been dropped by the ufc and moved down in weight to LHW.
Mark Weir after making short work of his opponent in London fought Phillip Miller at UFC 40 (you may remember Miller, he won a decision in the first fight at London). Weir again looked awesome standing and should have had the win in the bag but was submitted in R2 via rear naked choke.
Both Sudo and Weir will be invlved at UFC 42 on April 25th, just wish Sky would bring it back, the PPV atleast.

http://mma.tv/tuf/DisplayMessages.cfm?TID=192853&P=81&FID=1&c=1 That knockdown looked a bit dubious. Sapp looked like he sat down and then lay down as opposed to being knocked down. :suspect: It was a good punch and the kick that set it up was also good - but it didn't look like a knockdown combination to me - the reaction from Sapp just seemed a bit odd.

Yeah it did look a bit dodgy, if it was a work they would have had Sapp winning i think. I thought it was hilarious the way he went down. The delay might have been due to the kick to the liver setting in. Still though what a pussy Sapp is just curling up in a ball and crying.

I'm just starting to get into MMA and in the last couple of days I've watched UFC 43 and Pride 26 both of which were very entertaining but I preferred the UFC event (though I’ve read that Pride is generally better at the moment.) There were some excellent fights in both so I'm gonna have to download a few of the older shows. Any recommendations?

Are you guys sourcing from a.b.p-w by any chance? Willaz - :notworthy
Anyway Pride is considered the superior organisation. Infact the UFC is struggling (financially) right now. Zuffa failed to capitalise on the huge success of UFC 40 and have had poor attendances and ppv buys since.
Pride 26 was pretty good although Pride 25 was
I prefered UFC 43 over the last Pride and now UFC 44 wont be until September 26th. :(
Pisces, i've just got a Pioneer 105 so give me a chance to fit it and you can borrow a couple of dvd-r's off me and transfer them over to your hdd.
I have pretty much all of the recent UFC's (40,41,42,43 & best of 2002) aswell as some older events and bits and pieces (gotta get back on the hub on DC).
For Pride i have (8,10,17,25 and 26) and some other events i have to finish off.
Play also have a couple of recent UFC's that have just been rls'd/rls'd next month...

The first couple of UFCs were tougher than it is now as it was bare knuckle and you could head butt i dont think you can do this anymore. Royce Gracie won it for ages and there worth watching just for fighters you dont see anymore like overweight kickboxers , all out boxers and other people that just cant put up a fight nowadays cause the sport has gone so much more professional. UFC 1 is a laff cause its so badly organised and the commentators talk crap for the entire length of it.

Yeah they have lots of rules now pretty much so they have the approval of the Nevada State Athletic Commision allowing them to hold events in Vegas which is their strongest market/most loyal support.
Regarding how diiferent the rules are off the top of my head...
First off, now they have rounds, 3 x 5 min rounds and 5 x 5 min rounds for championship bouts.
No eye gouging (this rule was in place for the first UFC)
No headbutting
No strikes to the spine or back of head.
No downward strikes with the point of the elbow
No kicking a downed opponent in the head
No knees to the head
No stomping an opponent
No holding the fence
No small joint manipulation (fingers)
Royce Gracie pretty much walked through much bigger fighters than him in the first UFC's because they didn't know how to fight on the ground. It was like a showcase for Gracie Jiu Jitsu.
In todays world MMA athletes are cross trained in a number of disciplines so although you may get one fighter who specialises in one discipline you can bet he will be more than capable at other martial arts.

Never worked out how anyone gets this stuff off newsgroups. There always seems to be very few posts, and missing chunks. Am I doing something wrong (don't all shout "YES!!!" at once. ;) )

Pay servers are the way to go. Most postings are 99.9% complete and the retention (how long posts stay up for) is much longer (10-12 days). Also they have many more groups.
I use www.giganews.com (you get 33% on top free)
easynews.com is another popular provider

Is itdefinitely worth paying for newsgroups? What set-up do you have (1GB, 6GB, 8GB per month, etc)?

I would try your own isp's news service first then i think gignaews do a free 1 gig 3 day trial.
I usually use 6GB-8GB per month (try to limit myself to a tenner) and dont really like going above that (to 12GB) especially now that the tv season is over.
Another good deal with giganews is that you dont get charged for headers (the txt headings of files) and they can surprisingly amount to a lot megs. Also you get 33% free with giga so 6GB (x 1.33) is really 8GB and 8GB is 10.64GB.
Heres my stats for this month...
Transfer (since 06/01/03) 8.17GB/8.16GB
Type D/L Billed Free
Articles 12.20GB 8.17GB 4.02GB
Headers 1.56GB 0.00GB 1.56GB
Total 13.75GB 8.17GB 5.58GB

Funnily enough i tried NTL's the other day. It doesn't appear to have much retention but then i expected that. I havent gone through many groups all i d/l was Moloko on Jools Holland and got full speed. I did try to update the sd-6 group (highest quality svcd tvrips) and NTL's newsservers dont carry that.

pride.fc.total.elimination.2003 is available at the usual haunt on the newsgroups.
Without doubt the biggest MMA event of the year so far until the Grand Prix is concluded in October with the semi finals and final.
Does Lee Remindres (spelling) fight in Pride at all?

PRIDE is only for the bigger guys LHW upwards although MW mix it with the bigger guys. They have though just announced a new show called PRIDE BUSHI-DO which is specifically for the smaller guys for which Remedios is eligible for. To tell you the truth though he isn't good enough to compete in bigger organisations.

Just watched the first hour of this. Much more entertaining the majority of UFC fights that I've seen.
Quinton Jackson's mom really should have got to him with the soap as a child, though. I think he's been watching Samuel L Jackson in Pulp Fiction a bit too much. ;)

Rampage is hilarious!
PRIDE is definately a bigger organisation than the UFC. I think there 40,000 plus attended the GP whereas the UFC right now is struggling to get 10,000 people in.
They are also putting together some awesome off the chart cards of late.
Just a few rule differences below (the main ones)...
UFC allows elbows to the face and head, Pride does not.
In Pride you can 'soccer kick' a downed oppenent anywhere including the head and even stomp on them. You can also knee them in the head while on the ground. In the UFC you cannot do any of those.
The next round of the PRIDE GP: Final Conflict (semis then final) will take place in November.
UFC 44: Undisputed takes place on September 26th.

There was a K1 card in Las Vegas the other night. Bob Sapp and Mike Tyson had a huge pull apart brawl. From the sound of it, methinks Vince McMahon was involved. ;)
