Well nto quite but iirc season ends soon (16th i believe) and the current standings see the Mighty Lakers languishing in 6th but certain of a spot.

Surely some of you that watch rounders, sorry baseball are interested in the only true American Sport??!!

For those interested the current standings (just eastern/western and those that are in playoff spots, in () is there standing in there respective divisions (A=Atlantic, C=Central M= Midwest P=Pacific) * means they secured poff spot, ** means they've won there respective division *** and they are champions of their respective conferences)

Eastern

Detroit (1C)*
New Jersey (1A)*
Philadelphia (2A)*
Indiana (3C)*
New Orleans (4C)*
Boston (3A)*
Orlando (4A)
Milwaukee (4C)

Western

San Antonio (1M)*
Sacremento (1P) **
Dallas (2M)*
Portland (2P)*
Minnesota (3M)*
Lakers (3P)*
Utah (4M)*
Phoenix (4P)

So just one spot available in the Western Conference, 2 in the eastern.

Matches shaping up to be interesting in the playoffs, especially with it looking like Kobe is back on form, a truly daunting task for anyone with him and Shaq running the Lakers show. And of course with TMack top PPG scorer in the whole league Orlando cant be discounted at this late stage.

Oh well, lets watch this one go down quicker than Monica at a Clinton Lookalike contest.

Now I can appreciate the athleticism of the players but tbh I find it tedious. It seems to me that it's a case of whoever misses most loses.

In football goals are relatively rare events and therefore I think are appreciated more. Basketball just seems a case of run down one end - score - run down the other end - score. Repeat.

Gotta agree there baseball is a much more interesting game imo......

i was by no means insulting the great "sport" of baseball (anyone thinking of the Simpsons bit where Homer goes to the game sober!!)

But seriously, i know theres a few guys on here that are interested in BBall, nothing to be ashamed of!

Will try to find out what the next sky match is (memory like a sieve at times!)

well saturday 9 oclock see Detroit at New Orleans by the looks of it (sky sports is a useless site!) but the big match is Sunday Nights Live Match as the Portland Trailblazers host the LA Lakers!!

Both should be pretty good matches, although would be more intetresting to see the clashes with teams that are yet to secure POff spots

:p

Just had a idea on how to improve BBall - make it a 2 minute game - starts to get exciting around that point.

Seriously tho - used to quite enjoy BBall when it was shown on Ch4 and presented by Mark Webster and his two mates.

Just find baseball more interesting, that's all. :)

mikeh1982
13-04-2003, 21:58
yeah Lakers @ Portland but the game only has 4mins to run. Bit of a mishmash so far, Portland playing pretty well but Kobe just seemsto have got hot.
Oh SS3, sorry thought i'd mentioned it earlier in thread

mikeh1982
13-04-2003, 22:21
Lakers 99 Portland 101

Lakers lead for less than a minute in the whole match. Kobe hit 36pts (of which only 4 came in the first half!) and went on a pretty impressive 13/13 ftrun (missed 14 tho) Shaq also had 36pts.
Wells led the Trailblazers with 29pts and 11 rebounds, and overall Portland did out play them, and it will help come deciding that all important 4th spot. (home advantage and all)
Two matches left of the season (iirc) so by Thursday we should know the poff positions (annoying that Jordans last game isnt live as i'll probably know the result before seeing the "highlights")

mikeh1982

right to continue this hugely popular thread, heres the current NBA standings (just eastern/western and those that are in playoff spots, in () is there standing in there respective divisions (A=Atlantic, C=Central M= Midwest P=Pacific) * means they secured poff spot, ** means they've won there respective division *** and they are champions of their respective conferences)

Eastern

Philadelphia (2A)*
Indiana (2C)*
New Orleans (3C)*
Boston (3A)*
Orlando (4A)*
Milwaukee (4C)*

Western

San Antonio (1M)*
Sacremento (1P) **
Dallas (2M)*
Minnesota (3M)*
Portland (2P)*
Lakers (3P)*
Utah (4M)*
Phoenix (4P)*

so we have all the play off spots at now, and if the season ends today this would be the line up in the first round of the playoffs, best of seven matches

Eastern

A Detroit - Milwuakee
B New Jersey - Orlando
C Phillipdelpia - Boston
D Indiana - New Orleans

1 winner of a vs Winner of d
2 winner of b vs winner of c

E Winner of 1 vs Winner of 2

Western

A San Antonio - Phoenix
B Sacremento - Utah
C Dallas - Lakers
D MInnesota - Portland

1 Winner of A vs Winner of D
2 Winner of B vs Winner of C

W Winner of 1 vs Winner of 2

Winner of E vs Winner of W

Shaping up to be a good end to the season, i'd expect most of the home teams to take the first round, possible exceptions Lakers and Indiana/New Orleans could be really close, after that, who knows!!

Obviously these arent final standings, but i dont think they'll change to much, we'll know by Wed tho!

My team is the Rockets but they've been on a shcoking run lately and dropped out of playoff contention.

Although the seasons have now ended, any basketball fan should get NASN on Sky and check out the College and High School Basketball. Wait until you see Carmelo Anthony and LeBron James in the NBA next year! :notworthy

What do people feel about the Heat's decision to retire MJ's #23?.It's a nice tribute to probably the best player to ever grace the court but it just seems odd seeing as though he never played for Miami.

mikeh1982
17-04-2003, 08:55
i dont think it would be to much for no23 to be retired fullstop (everyone) Jordan is probably solely responsible for so many people watching and playing the sport.
Anyway, heres the playoff fixtures

Eastern

Detroit - Orlando

New Jersey - Milwaukee

Indiana - Boston

Philladelphia - New Orleans

Western

San Antonio - Phoenix

Sacremento - Utah

Dallas - Portland

Minnesota - Lakers

No need for an updated table (but when its available i will post a complete final one anyway) Lakers winning there last game could come back and bite them, Minnesota are a great side, as it stands dont see the matches going outside the favourites.

Perhaps we as a nation don't give as much recognition to achievements as we should but in the States they go too far the other way.

Can't wait for the 3 hour ceremony (taking place half way through the 4th quarter or something) when we can all get gooey eyed etc.

what are the chances of getting home Lakers tickets for the play-offs? - I'm going on holiday to the US tomorrow and I noticed they're playing on 27th which is my last night in LA and also my birthday so I'd love to go see them (I'll be in LA when they also play on 24th but I'm already going to see the Yankees play Anaheim on that date :))

I've looked on Ticketmaster but there site isn't clear/doesn't look like it's been updated as there are various play-off games listed as TBA

I've had a search and found a few LA classifieds websites with people offering the tickets for sale - best I've seen is $450 for 4 tickets (which is what I'm after) but they would be for the lowest grade tickets.. still considering it at the moment but I need to check with the rest of my party

$92 face value for those 4 tickets:eek:

bit of a poor ending to a great career, thought he might play the whole match, and if your gonna give him a free shot, lets make it memorable hey, free lane or something, just to see some Jordan magic. Some fo the highlights shown of him were mighty impressive, and the stats they came out, in his highest scoring seasons he was winning the Defensive MVP. I really hope this is it, cos this wasnt the MJ that led the Bulls so succesfully, still looked a step above a lot of the guys out there tho.

Game ends with a comprehensive Philly win, never much doubt really.

only a couple of matches to update, Philly - new orleans and Sacremento - utah.

Phillidelphia take a 3-1 lead with a 96 - 87 win and Sacremento do the same over Utah with a 99 - 82 victory.

Couple of shocks going on Orlando in particular, and Boston are doing well (as are Phoenix incidentally)

Think Boston can get through (and be the first team to do so) tonight if they can beat the Pacers at Indiana, everyone else playing can only move one step closer.

Will post again 2mo if i remember!

mikeh1982

oh well, someone might be interested!

Sacremento Kings are the only team to secure the semis spot with a comprehensive 4-1 win over the Jazz.
The Detroit Pistons overcame Orlando to pull back to only 3-2 behind, and its all go tonight as the Spurs, Nets, Celtics and Lakers can pinch wins tonight, and stop it going to an all or nothing final game.

mikeh1982
02-05-2003, 12:28
WOOHOO!!! LAKERS go through with a 101 - 85 rout over the timberwolves. Also going through are Nets, Celtics and Spurs, as all the teams who needed a win got it.

Tonight sees the potentially final match between Pistons - Magic, Maveriks - Blazers and The Sixers against the Hornets. All Magic are 3-2 up but threw away the chance for a semi spot so that match could be big for them. Apart from that the favourites are looking to go through tonight.

The next round looks like this:

Spurs - Lakers

Mavs/Blazers - King

and

Pistons/Magic - Sixers/Hornets

Nets - Celtics

Dr Hfuhruhurr

I'm kinda interested. :)

Just a bit of a US sports junkie I guess. If there was still a highlights show on Ch4 then maybe I'd have more than a passing interest.

So have the Lakers defied expectations by progressing?

mikeh1982

oh yeah!!! and my location as been shamelessy nicked from the NBA site, a haiku or something someone sent in!

mikeh1982
07-05-2003, 21:25
right i'll try again (bloody comp crashed last time, so just scores!!)

Top seeds Pistons survived a scare against the Magic in the first round and have bounced back well as the lead Philly 1-0

The New Jersey Nets have also taken the lead in there match against the Celtics, going into tommorows match 1-0 up

Over in the West the Lakers are in trouble again as the SA Spurs move 1-0 up in their semi (and an incredible 5-0 overall i believe) those stats will make it difficult for them to come back, but if any team is going to do it, you cant bet against Shaq and Kobe!

oh and the other match :p
The Sacremeto Kings take a lead over the Dallas Mavericks, and will be lookingto press home the home court advantage of being favourites (and 2nd seeds overall in the west)

we went to this game in the end and it was excellent - worth every cent for the 360 jam by Kobe alone (not that I paid for it - my bro bought my ticket as a birthday present) - not sure if the Lakers can bounce back quite as effectively against San Antonio tho

btw.. we also happened to walk within a 1st class seat of Magic Johnson on an overnight flight to New York a week later :notworthy :)

well lakers back in it at 2-1, great game this morning! and we stay wit the Lakers on SS as 2mo nights game is the fourth in the series against the Spurs, can they bring it back level!!

Pistons - Sixers
Pistons lead 2-0 going into tonights game, looking to extend to 3, and should do it really

Nets - Celtics
Nets look a shoe in for the next round as they take a commanding 3-0 win, and play again 2mo.

Kings and Mavs are all tied at 1 a piece, they also meet tonight

And as said Spurs lead the Lakers 2-1 but the Lakers should have home court advantage Sunday as they look to level the series

mikeh1982
15-05-2003, 10:04
for those interested heres the current standings,

First Team through the New Jersey Nets with an emphatic 4-0 win over the Boston Celtics.
Also in the East, The Psitons have a 3-2 lead over Philly and have a chance to clinch the series (and a final spot against the Nets) tommorow night, but wont be easy as its in Philly

Over in the Western Conference the reigning 3 times champions have it alll to do, after pulling back to 2-2 (including that brilliant win in LA Sunday) they fell back again in San Antonio and now trail 3-2. Although tonight sees them entertain the Spurs they will have to win away to go through, and cant afford to lose. Will the Spurs be the team that stop this run??

And the other match in the west, see the Dallas Mavericks take a 3-2 lead over the Sacremento Kings, they also meet tonight, and again its the trailing team that are hosting.

Update after the weekend cos hopefully on of these matches will be saturdays match!!

dont think so unfortunately (no idea why, assume sky as all the rights in this country) i'm reliant on NBA.com for the scores and a highlights match on saturday/live sunday on SSE generally. Hopefully they'll show all the matches of the final, but i doubt it, aerobics or major league tiddlywinks is far more important!!

Seems a shame tbh. As you know I'm not a big fan of the NBA but I do like the big games. Sat up and watched the finals when Ch4 showed them live. Particularly remember the Seattle - Chicago Series.

well a forum mourns (or at least i do) as i find out today that the LA Lakers will have to start there unbeaten run over again. Trounced 110 - 82 by the spurs, who move through 4-2.

Oh well they still dont know there opponents as the Mavericks and the Kings play game 7 tonight.

Over in the east a thrilling OT win for the Pistons (missed cos i had to go out) over the Sixers gave them the series 4-2 and they meet the Nets.

Not sure who i want to win now, quite like Dallas but pretty sure Duncan can lead the Spurs to a victory over the Nets.

well done (and it looks like i was too late!!!)

they really should have pinched that one at the end tho to push to OT.

How much you win?? and what odds can u get on Spurs to win this year?

Managed to win £55,the best price for the Spurs is 8/15.

thats not a bad win, must have put a bit on tho????

mikeh1982
27-05-2003, 10:50
woohoo, big bump (missed live match so was waiting for a repeat, but gave in and looked up score!!)

The Nets performed a clean sweep over the detroit pistons, and set up a meeting with either the Spurs or the Maveriks (and looks like the spurs, who are 3-1 up)

Spurs can (and should) pinch it tonight at home.

Then come the finals!!!!! Still fancy the Spurs to win it, but Nets will be the fresher team.

wont pretend to know too much about him, but looks very promising from what i've read, and by the sounds of it was always pretty likely to be first pick. Team wise, difficult to say, although many teams are built around one player can really see it being a harsh season for him. Will look forward to seeing if he can live up to the hype (and is alwyas nice to see the underdogs get a lift!)

I've seen LeBron James in 2 games that were shown on NASN and he was fantastic in both.

I think a lot of the hype is driven by the fact that his game and physique is like that of a player 5 years older. He's got the skills but more than anything just looks like he'll slot straight into an NBA starting line up without a problem. The US commentators LOVE him and reckon he's better than Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant when they were his age.

LeBron going to the Cavs will be huge for them and could instantly make them playoff contenders next season.

Another one to watch out for is Carmelo Anthony who was MVP with the NCAA tournament winners Syracuse. Despite being 3 or 4 years older than LJ he doesn't have the same physical presence but should still make a major impact with whoever gets him.

well i havent seen either match live (had to do an early shift both mornings after it, and my SKY+ box decided not to record ) but i do know the current score 1-1

SA took the first 101 - 89 but the Nets stormed back away from home to win 87 - 85 (and from the last 10 which i saw, was more comfortable than the scoreline suggests, Duncan was really poor from the line, something like 3 from 10)

Next match sunday, and i should actually be able to watch live!!

ohhh my.... what a last game!!!!!

took them until the last 6 minutes to get a lead but San Antonio took a deserved win. Tim Duncan had possiblly the best match i've seen him have, and broke the overall block shots in a NBA finals series (and tied i believe for the blocks in a game) and was only two blocks off of well, quadruple double??? good rebounding, stealing, passing, shooting the complete lot, ok he's scored more in other games, but he looked amazing. Also Robinson, hell the whole team looked pretty good from here. The Nets did very well, and for most of that match thought they'd hold it off for the decider, but in the end they couldnt do anything.

Loved this season, and cant wait for the start of next (especially with the promising youngsters coming through) and COME ON LAKERS!!!!!!!!!!!

Just know that he's been around ages so he must have been getting on a bit.
