With the season nearing the end in both countries I thought it was time for a thread about two of Europe’s biggest leagues (although I bet nobody else cares and I just keep posting to myself over and over again.) Any predictions I post will probably end up being wrong especially if I've had a bet on them.

After the last couple of seasons Depor have become my favourite Spanish side and I'd like to see them win La Liga again but Sociedad have been a revelation this season and it would be great to see the underdogs win the best league in Europe. Nihat has been absolutely fantastic this season and I hope United do try and sign him in the summer as his pace and tenacity not to mention his finishing are what United need up front.
I'm shocked to see Barca so low down the table as they have some of the best young talent around like Saviola, Riquelme, Xavi, Rochemback etc but I guess nobody has stepped up and filled Rivaldo's boots in terms of scoring. It's amazing how much they rely on Luis Enrique’s goals too as they don't look half the team when he isn't available which has been too often this season. They’ll need to add a defender and a striker in the summer if things are to change.
In Italy the title is there on a plate for Juve but you can never tell in Serie A as they like to take the title race right down to the wire. :D

I think Depo have on of th best strike forces about Tristan and Valaron are both great players :D
Tristan and Valeron are great players, but they can't really compete with a striker stable of Ronaldo (when he bothers), Raul, Morientes and Portillo
A couple of cracking match' on tonight - in both leagues..

Spain is over IMO, unless real take their eye off the ball. Unlikely as they are through to teh semi of Europe already. The relegation battle will be interesting.
Italy, well, unless Inter pull their finger out they seem to have 'bottled it' again. i do feel for cuper as I wouldn't be surprised if he is replaced this summer. Nice to see Parma and Chievo doing well :)

Well last season the Barca-Depor fixture finished 3-2 and the season before it was 2-3 while the last two Inter v Milan league matches have finished 2-4 and 0-6.
I'm gonna go out on an limb and say there'll be a few goals tonight. :D
Tasty stuff!
You've got to fancy both teams who are top at the moent to stay there.

The tables have been updated after today's matches. It was great to see Depor win and hopefully Sociedad can do the same tomorrow as that will blow the title race wide open.
In Italy, if Juve win tomorrow then the title is in the bag. IMO the only way they can slip up is if they get over-confident.

The La Liga games on Sky this wekend were both excellent and I'm delighted with both results as the title race is wide open now. It also showed that a hard working team who have the quality to create and score chances can roll Madrid over.

Juve in the final? No chance. United will beat them home and way in the semis! :p
i have a feeling that Juve will get the Seria A title, but Milan will win the Champion League, beating Real Madrid in the final.
I am amazed how wel Pippo Inzzagi is doing, i have never rated him, but you can't argue with the goals this season!!
PS - I was at the Camp Nou for last years Barca v Depor match. Kliverts late header!! What a game that was, Rivaldo was class. Barcalona shouldn't have just let him walk for nothing.
Spanish football atm is brilliant. Sick to death of hearing Richard Keys say the premiership is the best league in the world for excitement. Spanish football has everything, world class players, great goals and dramatic games every week.

A very intresting articel by JAMES RICHARDSON ........
http://football.guardian.co.uk/continental/story/0,8018,937267,00.html
About his thoughts on the weekends Seria A action and who he think he will win the title this year :D
Still, here's the thing: while the draw on one hand stretched Juve's lead at the top by a point, it also demonstrated just how fragile they've grown of late. They've only won once in their last four matches, and that was against eight-man Torino - elsewhere they've lost at Milan, and scraped through shaky draws with Barcelona in the Champions league and now Bologna.
With Del Piero not yet back in form, and with David Trezeguet injured yet again, Juventus are slowing up at precisely the wrong moment of the season.
So will that mighty six-point margin be enough? Consider this: while Milan this weekend have a home banker against Empoli and Inter visit Bobby Baggio's Brescia, Juve will be hosting one of their oldest and most bitter rivals - Roma, a side aptly described by their own manager as a 'timebomb' for opponents. A team that's already won away to both Valencia and real Madrid this season. Were Milan to win, and were Roma to force even a draw, Milan would have made up four points on Juve in just two rounds, and they'd have another five to play.
Milan made up a bigger gap than this on Lazio four years ago, Lazio did it to Juve three years ago, and Juve themselves did it to Inter only last May. It'd take a sillier person than I not to recognise that Juve are still the clear favourites, and deservedly so. But equally, only a fool would forget that recent Serie A history. Until next time readers, don't you be that fool.

With a replacement like Luque who is almost as good, I don't think it will matter as Makaay and Luque are capable of firing home enough goals to keep Depor going.

That's an absolutely shocking result for Madrid and for me it just highlights the already obvious fact that Madrid should be spending £40m on a couple of defenders rather than Beckham. In addition to that 5 they've also conceded 4 to United and Sociedad in recent games.
It's a great night for the title race as it leavees Sociedad just one point behind Mardid now and they both have 6 to play. As I've already mentioned if Sociedad finnish level on points with Madrid they will win the title as it is settled on head to head records rather than goal difference.

Things are getting very tight in Spain with three teams who can win the title, Valencia and Celta battling it out for the last CL spot and over half a dozen teams competing for that last Uefa Cup place.
I have a felling that Barca might just snatch that Uefa cup place and keep that proud record of being involved in Europe every season.
My tips for the UEFA:
Celta and Mallorca
Mallorca's recent form is good and they have some of the better players in the Spanish league playing for them such as Eto'o, Ibagaza, Riera etc..

It seems that Madrid are trying their best to throw away the title and are now 1 point behind Depor with 5 games to go and it's going to be very close and the added distraction of the CL could work against Madrid. Sociedad have an extremely difficult game tomorrow aginst Mallorca who beat Madrid 1-5 last week and beat Depor 3-0 the week before but I think they can win it to draw level with Depor. Atletico don't always turn up and by the time they meet Depor if they don't have anything left to play for then they won't be in a hurry to do Madrid a favour. :D
I only follow the Primera and Segunda so after that you probably are the only one.
It's getting close for the final CL spot now and as Valencia and Celta both play the top 3 in their remaining games there will definitely be more points dropped. The final UEFA spot is nearly impossible to call with 2 points separating 6 teams. I really hope that Betis get the lace as on their day they're a match for most teams and you always get entertainment from them.

It's going to be agonisingly close and will probably go down to the last day of the season but I still think Sociedad will do it as Madrid will have to gain 2 points on them to take the title. The run-ins for all 3 teams are difficult and I don't see any of them taking maximum points so it will be fascinating to watch.

How many teams go through to next years CL from Italy ??
I ask as either Milan nr Juventus will go though as defending champs and not as a result of there league place :)
AFAIK it will still just be the 4 teams from Italy.
the only way you get an extra cl place as defending champion, is if you don't qualify for the cl through the league.
i.e if Barca had won it this year, they would be guaranteed a place, and not at the expense of the normal la liga places.
They could have changed it now that there's loads of places, but this is the way it used to be certainly up until a season or so ago

I think Real Madrid will win the title but they will need to win rest of the games as I can't see Real Sociedad getting Maximum points.
If I were a betting man, I would bet on Deportivo.
Real Madrid need to buy 2 central defenders and use Ivan Helegutina in central midfield rather than waste money on Beckham, and also make the team more fitter.

Definately have seen a few players wondering looking like they're carrying a few extra pounds...
Can't believe Ronaldo hasn't lost his weight considering he's played so many games.
Is his missus still playing in Italy? Maybe he's become a junk food addict.

Oh Celta Vigo trash Deportivo 3-0 and kill off Deportivo title hope.
Real Madrid will play Celta Vigo next, then Atletico Madrid and Athletic Bilbao.
While Real Sociedad play Valencia, Celta and Atletico Madrid.
I fancy Real to win 2 and draw 1 and Real Sociedad to win 2 and lose to Valencia and this mean Real Madrid win the title on goal different

Nope Madrid would lose the title as it's not settled on goal difference. The head-to-head records are used and the results were a 4-2 win to Sociedad at the Anoeta and a 0-0 draw at the Bernabeu

It's often mentioned on Sky's coverage of La Liga and a quick search on google should bring up some references to it but I can't provide any sort of official link as my Spanish isn't very good. :D
The third paragraph down on the right of this page briefly explains it - http://www.soccer-spain.com/ssdocs/history/league.html
Pisces is correct.
If i remember correctly Kovacevic had a great chance to win the Bernabeu game which would have virtually sewn up the league
Nerver mind...

I was happy with that result as it won me £26 and it gave Sociedad a bit of comfort at the top. They now need to win just 2 of their final 3 games and as I don't see Mardrid beating Atletico then 4 points would be enough for Sociedad.

Last nights result -
Valladolid 2-0 Rayo Vallecano
Todays Fixtures -
Osasuna v Alaves
Bilbao v Deportivo La Coruna
Atletico v Real Madrid
Celta Vigo v Real Sociedad
Espanyol v Villarreal
Malaga v Sevilla
Real Betis v Racing Santander
Recreativo v Mallorca
Valencia v Barcelona
The Osasuna game kicked off at 6pm and the rest are 8pm kick offs with the Madrid derby live on Sky Sports 1. It's incredibly hard to predict tonights games but I reckon Madrid will draw, Sociedad will lose and Deportivo will win which will make for a tense last day.
33mins gone and it's a demolision job in the Madrid derby
Athletico Madrid 0 - 3 Real Madrid
Raul
Ronaldo 2
Real Sociedad are losing 1-0 to Celta Vigo.

It's 0-4 to Madrid so it looks like they're in the driving seat going into the last game of the season as Sociedad are now losing 3-1. It's also looking like valencia won't be in the CL next season.

It's all come down to the last game. If Madrid beat Bilbao then they're champions but if they fail to win and Sociedad beat Atletico then the title will be heading to San Sebastian.
Madrid don't have an easy game as Bilbao have been in great form, they need a win, are deadly on the counter attack and they will be trying to help a fellow Basque team. Atletico are very unpredictable but I doubt they'll want to help Madrid so it should make for an interesting finish to an excellent season.

Madrid 1-0 Bilbao
Ronaldo finishes an excellent move after 9 minutes and that early goal could be crucial.

Madrid 1-1 Bilbao
A fantastic strike by Alkiza but the defending was simply awful.
The cannon ball kid scores a free-kick.
2-1 Madrid.

Madrid 2-1 Bibao
Roberto Carlos drills in a free kick from the edge of the box to restore Madrid's lead just before half time.
Pisces Iscariot
22-06-2003, 20:09
Sociedad have scored against Atletico just as Zidane was missing a great chance for Madrid. The next 37 minutes could be very interesting.
Now it's 2-0 for Sociedad.
Pisces Iscariot
22-06-2003, 20:20
Madrid 3-1 Bilbao
Ronaldo scores his 30th of the season and has almost certainly sealed the title for Madrid. Unless Bilbao can score two unanswered goals in the next 25 mins then Madrid will be champions.
