I'm getting married next year and have been asked by the missus to think of some songs to play during the civil ceremony and during the evening.
Now I've got a fairly wide taste in music, so I'm not ruling anything out. I'd appreciate any thoughts on really great lovey dovey type songs which I can play on the day to amuse us and the guests. Here are my thoughts so far:
Elvis - The Wonder Of You
Charlatans - The Only One I Know
REO Speedwagon - Keep On Loving You
Styx - Babe
REM - Love Is All Around Me
The Coral - Dreaming Of You
U2 - All I Want Is You
Your help would be appreciated guys and galls.....
We had Etta James' "At Last" - the lyrics are wonderfully cheesy, and the song itself is beautiful.
For the love of god, don't go for "love is all around" from the dreadful Wets:(
Smack me bitch up by the proidgy would be a good choice;)

'Bring your daughter to the slaughter' always goes down well

Fell In Love With A Girl - The White Stripes
Just like on the advert.
Zoom - Fat Larrys Band (don't ask me why but I put this on a compilation recently and everyone who heard it said they love it!)
We plumped for Anita Bakers "Giving you the best that I got".
Been to a couple where they chose Sineads Nothing Compares 2 U which I always find odd given the lyrical content!
I asked the question back in October when I got married and got some great suggestions but the thread has since gone.
We went for 'Amazed' by Lonestar after I heard Wogan playing it on Radio 2 one morning after I got fed up of Coxy's annoying mumbling.
Great words and not one that loads of other people would have.

How about Let's Get It On by Marvin Gaye.

You could open the ceremony with Brian May's guitar rendition of the "Wedding March" from the Flash Gordon soundtrack. ;)
Of the good old "classic" (which has been done with overkill) : Bryan Adams "Everything I do, I do it for you"

I agree that Love is all around is a bit cheesy, but have you heard REMs version? Its much more like the original Troggs version with acoustic guitars and stuff.
Will look into the other suggestions.. cheers.
i had john lennon - just like starting over - class song
Radiohead

We had "Northern Sky" by the peerless Nick Drake.
Every line is just about perfect.

'You make me feel brand new' - The Stylistics
Ummm, you might want to have a closer listen to the lyrics of "REO Speedwagon - Keep On Loving You" - its maybe not quite the impression you want for a wedding.... :suspect:
Heres some of them:
"You should've seen by the look in my eyes, baby
There was somethin missin
You shoud've known by the tone of my voice, maybe
But you didn't listen
You played dead
But you never bled
Instead you lay still in the grass
All coiled up and hissin"
(which suggests to me that the relationships gone a bit wrong...)
"And though I know all about those men
Still I don't remember"
(suggests she was a bit of a, ummm, 'tart')
"Cause it was us baby, way before then
And we're still together"
(suggests she was seeing the singer, then lots of other blokes, then the singer, or maybe all at the same time?)
"And I meant, every word I said
When I said that I love you I meant
That I love you forever"
(yeah, that bit sounds nice  )

Elvis - The Wonder Of You - excellent choice, was one of the first songs at my wedding reception, it was the lyrics that made me choose it
When no-one else can understand me
When everything I do is wrong
You give me hope and consolation
You give me strength to carry on
And you're always there to lend a hand
In everything I do
That's the wonder
The wonder of you
And when you smile the world is brighter
You touch my hand and I'm a king
Your kiss to me is worth a fortune
Your love for me is everything
I'll guess I'll never know the reason why
You love me like you do
That's the wonder
The wonder of you
Bit cheesy I know, but its kinda nice :luv:

In the run up to my Waddin' ....myself and the best man went to pick up the old 'Tin Flute'.... and in the shop was a promo video from a company specialising in wedding video's .....and there was the beautiful bride geting out of the 'roller'....cut to the groom and best man ....standing at the front of the church in anticipation.........cut back to the bride with bridesmaids fussing all over her ....as the proud father get ready to walk his daughter down the isle.......... AAhhhh.
The sound track to this wedding video promo was..........Roxette ...it must of been love ...but its over now.........
I KID YOU NOT
:D
be my baby by the ronettes (or travis cover) will be playing at ours.
We decided on Marc Cohn's True Companion (the guy that did the original Walking in Memphis).
I wanted something that very few people would have heard, so that people would say "that's a crackin' song, who's that?"
And they did
Other than that, I requested that Creep by RadioHead get played (because it makes all the old folks think its a nice slow song, then builds up and kicks ass). It never got played though!
Make sure you get a decent DJ btw, we let the venue book ours, and he was utterly crap. The punters enjoyed it though (typical wedding type songs, like aga doo and crap). Me and the wife and our circle of friends would have liked someone with a little more....taste....though.
Hope it all goes well for you, I'm sure it will be an amazing day.

My mate said he'd have some GLC played at his wedding, but chickened out in the end. I was looking forward to seeing the old folks dance to Your Mother's Got a Penis. :D Seriously, You Knows I Loves You would make a good first dance.
Why not have Gorecki by Lamb? It's not a slow song, but definitely one of my favourite soppy ones. Haven't met a chick I want to play it to yet, though.
Or you could have Svefn-g-englar by Sigur Ros or Magnet's take on Lay Lady Lay.

Now i am prepared for a flaming here
I got married two weeks ago and had Groovy kind of love - Phil Collins for my first song.
i spent so long thinking of songs it was doing my head on, i have a wide taste in music and in the end Phil it was. Barry White, Lionel, Elvis and a few others were close to being chosen.
For background music we just had some Kenny G style instrumentals.
To be honest the day was so busy i never really paid any attention to the music.
There are a lot of other songs i could have picked but only i would have liked them.

Why not have Gorecki by Lamb?
 Played this just after we got married (civil service) - very nice indeed.
I picked our first dance, You're the best thing by Gladys Knight and the Pips but suprisingly (to me anyway) my wife's choice of Ewan McGregor covering Your Song from Moulin Rouge for the second song went down really well and didn't even seem that cheesy at the time.

I know someone joked about "Fell In Love With a Girl", but actually, "We're Going to be Friends" off The White Stripes' "White Blood Cells" would be lovely. It's a really sweet little song.
we went for a medley:
you're the best thing- style council
in my life- the beatles
at last- etta james
the way you look tonight- frank sinatra

15 years ago a mate of mine, marrying an 18 stone girl, had the first song as '3 times a lady' followed by 'fat bottomed girls'.
For the first dance he put his arms around her only to mimic not being able to get his fingers together as he pretended to huff'n'puff.
Amazingly they lasted 10 years till the inevitable divorce.

although i can't really talk - I had Lionel Ritchie at mine - Still in Love (first dance)
we also had 'Come away with me' Nora Jones for our last song.
Music for the ceremony was from Bach's violin concerto for 2 violins in D Major (you'd know it if you heard it) (used in Children of a lesser god to great effect)
it is very hard choosing a wedding song

found this (http://www.northtexasdj.com/receptionsongs.html) link to a list of suggested wedding songs while looking up lyrics to my Lionel Ritchie song - hope this helps
'our' song was 'Saving All My Love For You' by Whitney Houston, but because the lyrics weren't too apt, we had our first dance to 'Waiting For A Girl Like You' by Foreigner
Or you could always have 'Save Your Love' by Renee and Renato :D

For our civil wedding we had the following while people were coming in and taking their seats:- Bond - Victory; The Verve - Bittersweet & Sonnet; The Beloved - Sweet Harmony.
Mrs Rabbi entered and walked down the aisle to ABBA - I do, I do, Ido. Mrs Rabbi choose Joss Stone for to play while we were signing the register
Then we left has husband & wife to Pink - Get the party started.
Our first dance was Santana - Smooth. and we left most of the guest stunned as we had lessons and our dance was a Jive.

Bruce Springsteen - I Wanna Marry You
Had 'Into my Arms' by Nick Cave at Mr and Mrs Majestiks doo.
A better love song has yet to be written.
 :notworthy
We got married at the end of August and that was our first dance.
The rest of the night we started off with some old style rumbas. jives etc for the oldies and then had a rock/indie disco for the rest of the night. I supplied most of the music to the DJ who did a great job considering he had never heard most of it. The only dodgy bit was the 2 minutes of noise/feedback at the end of Human Fly by the Cramps which i had forgotten to edit out.
