It's that time of year for the rumours to start, and the signings won't be too far away either.

Here's a couple to get us started...

Mendy (Bolton) to Liverpool - rumours abound

Pires (Arsenal) to Valencia - wouldn't surprise me if we sold him for lots of £, we did the same to Overmars and he is one of our older players (30).

According to to a report on teletext this morning - Portsmouth are after Kevin Phillips for £2.5m.

Tottenham linked to every striker under the sun and we'll prolly not sign a single one! :oh-hum:

Still, the old links to Bobby Zamora appear again, along with competition for Pompey regarding Kevin Phillips.

We're gonna buy Rivaldo too!

Lol Kevin Phillips, he had a couple of good seasons but has been very poor since.

Portsmouth need to sign some talented, YOUNG players!

Hmm, as for Ronaldihno, don't forget Arsenal already have a couple of Brazilians doing well at the club, could encourage him. Would be a great replacement for Bergkamp if he can turn it on in the physical Premiership matches.

There was a dodgy rumour that Wenger was ready to offload Ljungberg to Roma in exchange for Walter Samuel. But then again, Ljungberg is always being linked with Italian clubs.

I think Arsenal would be geting the better deal there, Samuel is fantastic and they need someone to complement Campbell.

Mendy --> Liverpool has been officially denied.

However, there are a lot of rumours of Finan --> Liverpool.

Also Argentian U-20 "starlet" Jonas Gutierrez is on trial at Anfield with a view to a possible £2m move (sounds like another of Houllier's "interesting" signings)

Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Anthoy Le Tallec may arrive in Liverpool from Le Harve. Or maybe we'll wait another season.

I'm surprised theres been no mention of Senderos signing for Arsenal.

I have a nasty feeling he could prove to be Wengers best ever signing :(

Nujol
23-04-2003, 15:23
Senderos? Who he?

EDIT: Gallas (Chelsea) to Arsenal wouldn't surprise me, neither would Carr (Spurs) to Arsenal, also how about Berger (Liverpool) to Portsmouth - would fit with their policy of buying Premiership experienced (although perhaps a bit past it) players.

2 years is a long time. Villa won things more recently than Newc but i am sure he would prefer to join them (if you see my point).

Anyhow, my main point was that just because you have a link with his club does not mean he will sign. he may visit manchester before joining ;)

Nedved and Robinson wouldn't surprise me for ManU. Nedved was superb for Juve in the week although would he want to leave if they win the scudetto and the champs league?

EDIT: Although surely after seeing Ferdinand's "quality", Fergie has got to be suspicious about buying anyone from Leeds - in their team he looked amazing class but with bigger fish around him he looks like the weakest link in the defence. How good would Robinson look against Champs League opposition?

Remember though, Ferguson had tried to buy Ferdinand when he was on Loan to Bournemouth (iirc) and he was certainly very strongly linked to a £5million move in 1997. I doubt ferguson's decision to go for Ferdinand is based on anything Ferdinand did in a Leeds shirt. Ferdinands value was probably based as much on his World Cup performances where he was pretty outstanding.

If another Leeds player goes to manchester united though, I don't think the leeds fans will like it ;)

That's rubbish though and it's the same thing that's reported every year. Nike will finance one big transfer (they'll most likely want Ronaldinho at OT) and selling Beckham will raise the money to bring in 2 or 3 other players.

As a Utd fan I can see the need for change and some youthful inspiration in midfield but I am very worried at the prospect of Becks leaving. How can the board afford that considering his marketing value? I know he gets a considrable proportion of that himself but it is very dangerous to underestimate that particualrly in such a climate where value is falling and players individuality becomming more important to fans.

Keane and Giggs I could accept on the otherhand. Keane has been our talisman and we owe him dearly but he has lost form badly and now would be a good time to get some decent cash from Celtic, Boro or similar. Giggs blows hot and cold and whilst someone commented that becks has not won a game for us all season I would say that is more true of Giggs and really has been since 2000. Good but not good enough.

Butt, Solskjaer and Scholes could also bring in some cash but are useful utility players who could handle missing games because of some new precocious talent or to allow intermittent run outs for someone of Nedved's standing.

Ferdinand has not had a good season but will prove his worth (or at least some of it) and we have a youthful defense accumulating lots of big time experience like the italians did in the 80s.

Lastly van the Man needs a quality partner and I would be surprised if we do not add to our striker tally. However, I did say last saeason that Fergy would not and woukld employ Giggs and Scholes as partners and think he may well do that again only if forced to do so by spending what is / what becomes available on midlfield.

Whatever happens we will survive and continue to grow. Look at the departure of Cantona and Robson. We were all scared then and what happened - we went on to greater things.

My biggest worry is that we do a Fiorentina and buy big only to be let down massively. Real have just about got away with it but had a dodgy time for a bit.

Remember it is the sqaud ultimately that wins trophies and whatever happens that needs to be strenghtened up front and in the centre of the park.

My advice to the board (should they be listening ;) ) is keep Becks, sell Keane and Giggs and bring in some tried and tested British players such as Duff.

Fair point. Although IMO the Dolly and Daisy partnership took a season or two before they really came together.

As a United supporter, I can't say that I'm fussed about losing Beckham. If we're offered a silly amount of money for him. Take it I say. He's a great player, but he isn't irreplaceable.

Yes and to be honest he probably offers more than Becks in terms of traking people on and goals from active play but he is too old in my opinion.

Exactly - my worry too but I always thought Veron was over-rated since having him my 1998 WC fantasy team when he was tiped as the new Maradona :brickwall

Do you think Lazio would do us a swap? Don't forget they still love him over there ;)

Equally old but I wonder how much davids would cost. I always thought he would fit into Utd well and may well put that Keane/Robson/Moses oomph back into midfield.

And i would say his crossing is better and he does play consistently as well.

He hasn't done as well in the CL though

I think that Juventus as a whole haven't really done the CL thing for a few years now but domestically he has been very good.

Yes I've gathered that from your previous posts.

I have no doubt that Nedved is world class but which two would you have from Beckham, Nedved and Veron? The latter two I assume?

Good question ...............

Both Nedved and Veron go forward so unless i had a rock defence i think i'd raher have a Vierra or Keane style player with a Nedved or Veron.

One of the reasons Neved is able to go forward and do the stuff he does becuase he knows he has the great wall of China behind him (Edgar Davids ;) )

Depends on other players in the team but i would rather have Beckham and Nedved in most cases.

It's not speculation that United's sponsorship with Nike sees them get a sizable sum at the start of every season and it's not speculation that Nike will want the players they sponsor in a team they sponsor as it's good for business hence they would try and pave the way for a deal. Whether Fergie wants Ronaldinho is another matter.

Ferdinand has been rubbish for ManU. My point being that when he was a big fish at a smaller club he looked good, but now he is with the big-boys he doesn't look nearly so hot a prospect. £30m?!

Robinson has made some brilliant saves this season, but he has also let in some poor ones too. He is not blameless for their position in the table. Give us any of the Premiership goalkeepers and we'll all be able to find a couple of games where they played brilliantly, but a few good performances don't make him the complete goalie. ManU would be buying potential, NOT a world class keeper.

I've never heard of them so it wouldn't surprise me if we signed them! Most of Wenger's buys are unknowns, in fact we sign about 6 or 7 players during the season. Maybe one or two make it into the team, the rest move on after a season or two. Recent examples are Edu (2 years ago) and Toure (last year). :)

Like he didn't look a hot prospect in the big-boys world cup you mean?

Robinson has made some brilliant saves this season, but he has also let in some poor ones too. He is not blameless for their position in the table.
Thats such a nothing statement! Name a keeper that hasn't? Of course he has let in 'some poor ones' - every keeper does, but what makes a good keeper great is their all round ability and the ratio of good/bad games. Robbo has every attribute - his kicking is fantastic (a better passer than Beckham? ;) ),his shot-stopping is incredible and his reactions are awesome. He is excellent at crosses and possibly the only areas I would say he lacks is experience: something that will come, and he is learning fast.
Of course he is not blameless, nobody said he was, but there are those players who as a Leeds fan you know are responsible for the positives this season - Robbo is one of them. Without him, we'd have been relegated by now, and that is no joke. In fact, I'd say the only positive thing to come out of TV's appointment was the emergence of Robbo.

Give us any of the Premiership goalkeepers and we'll all be able to find a couple of games where they played brilliantly, but a few good performances don't make him the complete goalie.
When did I say "a few good performances"? Robbo has been an ever present this season, and has been outstanding in EVERY SINGLE GAME. Some more than others, obviously, but not once this season has he cost us points with a big gaffe. As I said in another thread, he has been so consistent for LUFC this season, I firmly belive he should be at least shortlisted for POTY.

ManU would be buying potential, NOT a world class keeper.
I never said he was world class...he's done nothing to earn the right to be called World Class, but everything I have seen of him thus far in his short career suggests he may well become so in the not too distant future.

Not particularly IMHO - IIRC, excepting perhaps Brazil, England didn't play any teams of the quality found in the Champion's League or even at the top of the Premiership.

Thats such a nothing statement! Name a keeper that hasn't? Of course he has let in 'some poor ones' - every keeper does, but what makes a good keeper great is their all round ability and the ratio of good/bad games. I totally agree with you.

When did I say "a few good performances"?

Well you picked one out in particular. Vs. Barcelona.

Clearly as a gooner I haven't seen all 90+ minutes of every single Leeds game - do you go to all home and away games btw? - and I apologise that I can't pick a certain game but I do recall a couple of games on Sky when Leeds were doing poorly that he failed to make fairly simple saves. I can't quote an example so unfortunately can't back that one up.

I never said he was world class...he's done nothing to earn the right to be called World Class, but everything I have seen of him thus far in his short career suggests he may well become so in the not too distant future.

That's what I was saying, I agree - he's on the way, let's hope for the sake of England that he gets there. It would be a shame to see him either go down the Woodgate/Smith route (thuggery) or the Ferdinand route (poor performances amongst the big boys).

BOBBY ROBSON wants to steal Christophe Dugarry from Birmingham City.

The French star has impressed Newcastle boss Robson since his arrival on loan from Bordeaux.

It is understood Newcastle have already made discreet contact with Bordeaux to discover the full details of Dugarry's contract situation.

And Robson is poised to hijack him from the Blues, who hope to persuade Dugarry to join them permanently in the summer.

Dugarry has admitted several Premiership clubs have expressed an interest in signing him - and Newcastle have the added incentive of European football next season.

Robson has also carried out a personal check on Benfica's Portuguese international Simao Sabrosa.

And he has agreed a £3.5million fee for Brazilian ace Kleberson of Atletico Paranaense.

Seems like Kluivert is now the most likely striking partner for Ruud, and very interesting comments from Ruud himself on this possibility

"I have heard Patrick is coming to Manchester United - and I will be waiting there to welcome him to Old Trafford with open arms."

"He is the greatest attacking talent in Europe. So far we've only played 18 internationals together but when we play together and train together every day, we will become even better.''

hmmm, if Kluivert and Ruud developed into an on pitch 'partnership' of Cole and Yorke (99) proportions that would be an awesome sight to see

2) Why should I name a player?! You have no proof whatsoever that Jeffers is the "most hated player", you even say that is it in your own opinion (IMO). And your argument about Roy Keane, "at least he doesn't dive" isn't a particularly good reason, and I would expect in my opinion that the countless professional fouling and intentional injury-causing would be a greater crime than ONE dive, but there you go!

? I don't give a damn about any ManU players, in fact I have a great respect for them all, they are excellent footballers although of course there are some that I think are better than others. If you are sad enough to just brand all the players of a certain team as "hated" just because they are rivals to your team, that's your problem. I would like to think I have a slightly more adult view of fooball.

I'm interested that you have now completely changed your argument - previously it was your "housemate" that said that Jeffers was the supposed "most hated player", and yet now you've clearly done a little survey for yourself (or just made it up) that "most people" say Jeffers is the "most hated player".

Inamoto is a funny character isn't he? He showed some good skills at Arsenal, but he did make a few silly errors - I would imagine from inexperience.

Then he looked a class act at the World Cup and I was disappointed we let him go. He went to Fulham and seemed to have a very good pre- and start to the season. But now, as far as I've seen, he's not that involved?

Fulham have reportedly made £11m record signing Steve Marlet available for transfer at a cut-price 1m euros - £770,000.
The France international has failed to justify his enormous price tag since arriving at the club from Lyon in 2001, scoring just 10 goals in 54 league appearances for the Cottagers.

Fulham are desperately trying to cut costs after recently revealing a £33.3m operating loss, and reportedly want to get the reputed £30,000 a week that Marlet earns per week off their wage bill.

The club have reportedly circulated his name amongst some of France's top clubs, with former side Lyon thought to be keen to end his Premiership nightmare.

Fulham refused to pay the final £3m installment on the £11.5m deal agreed for Marlet, claiming they were unhappy about the role his agents played in securing the deal. The club are appealing against a possible transfer embargo after Fifa told them to pay the remainder of the fee.

Should Marlet move back to France in a cut-price deal, it looks likely to represent the biggest transfer loss in British football history.

Fergie in for Tourette's Goalie?

Manchester United have agreed a deal for a goalkeeper who has fought an extraordinary battle with Tourette's syndrome, according to reports.

American net-minder Tim Howard has reached the peak of the game in the MLS as first-choice gloveman for the New York MetroStars and Sir Alex is keen to sign him for £1.2million, reveals the Daily Mirror.

Howard has battled bravely against the unsettling neurological disorder, which causes nervous tics and apparently random verbal outbursts, often of obscene language. He has recently won a humanitarian award for his work as a role model in helping others battle the affliction.

After watching the 23-year-old in action on video (playing in goal), Sir Alex Ferguson was so impressed that he sent his goalkeeping coach Paul Barron to Houston to scout the recent United States-Mexico friendly. Howard played a blinder, keeping a clean sheet and making five stunning saves - and Barron persuaded Fergie to pursue the player.

The Mirror reports that United initially made contact with MetroStars general manager Nick Sakiewicz in March and Howard said at the time of United's interest:

"You dream about things like this. They are the biggest sports team in world history."

The recent red-hot form of both Brad Friedel and Kasey Keller means that the 6'2" goalie has yet to play for his country, but United are confident that Howard's recent marriage to a Hungarian might ease work permit issues.

The France international has failed to justify his enormous price tag since arriving at the club from Lyon in 2001, scoring just 10 goals in 54 league appearances for the Cottagers.

He makes Heskey look prolific. And why does he keep getting called-up for France.

Yep - superb season for us, and officially our Carling Opta Player Of The Season. Yes, a couple of mistakes along the way (a couple of red mist moments), but still a very, very good goalie and he's had a good season.

That, despite the fact that we kept the fewest clean sheets in the Prem (apparently)
