View Full Version : Evanescence - any good?
Slayergirl

I'm currently loving the single they have out (the video with the girl climbing the outside of a building during a storm, and then falls off) and I wondered if the rest of their stuff is as good? If so, I might get the album, which I think is out today.
Yes the album is very good, however check out some of their demos & earlier stuff which IMO is just as good if not better.
There's a thread about them here (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=177233&highlight=evanescence)

Thanks very much! I did a search but it didn't bring anything up. Looks like I'm off shopping at lunchtime.
I like em :)
i definitely prefer the demo version of Bring Me To Life though, due to the absence of the crap nu-metal rapping that goes on in the commercial release. That soooo wasn't needed :gag:

I'd say the album material is better than the single. Not a weak track on there, very diverse and if you can find their older stuff you'll find some cracking songs.
Can't believe this has only just been released.:suspect:

Only 2500 copies of their debut were ever made. You won't find their earlier material anywhere except for WinMX/ Kazaa (or if you have the money, Ebay. I've seen them on there for £130).

Ah man I love that video for ‘Bring me to Life’ and yep as ya pointed out Slayergirl that is the one with the girl climbing along a building and falling off. That song rocks man.
Rock on pplz! :D Ah man I might get the album even! Gotta be done innit! :notworthy
Didnt mind the album. It has some outstanding tracks, mainly My Immortal, Imaginary and Tourniquet.
I'm bored of Bring Me To Life now, and think the rest of the album is average
She's a babe though and has a fantastic voice

yes, definitly
Evanescence seem to be trying really hard to be a more mainstream homogenized version of the more alternative sounding Lacuna Coil.
Good luck to them but judging by the sugary sounding slower tracks on their CD the singer is using this formula to launch a solo career, I really don't think that they'll have a long life in their current form.

It wasn't the name but the signature. There was a thread on the muse forum about this band and your signature is the same as a guy there who uses it as his avatar. I recognised it and just wondered if you were the same person :) The address is www.muse-official.com just click on the forums at the top right and look for a thread about this band.

Going on the strength of the recent album, my answer to the topic question would be :
No
I prefer Lacuna Coil because they actually manage to make their songs at least sound a little different from each other...

No, no nononono. What track was it? 'Bring Me to Life'?
It's hard to describe them without mentioning the 'goth/church' vibe they have going on. There is also a lot of piano instrumentation going on too.
Amy lee sings all the songs and there is no other example (that i'm aware of :suspect: ) where they bring in some two-bit rapper to make the song sound like Linkin Park-Lite.
If you have the means then i suggest you check out:
'Imaginary'
'Hello'
'Tourniquet'
'Before the Dawn'
There's nothing wrong with doing a bit of window shopping, as long as you don't make a purchase
And the chances of the likes of you and i in making a purchase, in this case, are very slim. :( Then again apparently Miss lee is single.

I second the gathering. Great band.
I must be the last person on the forum to have heard of them :|
But I have done tonight and am quite impressed - will definately be getting Fallen in the near future.
Have heard Lacuna Coil before tho and they're excellent
Even I like 'Bring Me To Life' .... & I generally hate the current rock scene (ordered the cd from CD-WOW last night via the Hong Kong site for £7.47).
They actually remind me of a more modern sounding version of Swedish/American female fronted melodic rockers Sahara (who were knocking around in the early 1990's) mixed in with All About Eve & a dash of Dream Theater.

Well i've finally succumbed and I picked Fallen up from Tesco this morning. I was going to wait and see if Sony do their usual and re-release the album with 'Super Bonus Extras' now it's picking up a bit of a buzz.
I was going to order it from Play or CD-Wow but couldn't be bothered to wait for delivery, besides it was £9.94 which is only 95p dearer that Play.

I can sum it up in one word - Powerful.
Love this album so much - the heavy riffing (except on My Immortal :D), the orchestration and Amys voice - it all goes together so well.
Opener Going Under sets the tone for the rest of the album perfectly, then it's into Bring Me To Life which I think everybody must know by now! As everyone else has said you can't judge the album by this one track because this is pretty much a one off (and that's no bad thing, the rest of the album is oooo much better).
I'm not going to write about every track, but I will say it's tough to choose a favourite track, but so far it's gotta be between Haunted or Tourniquet. Love the backing vocals at the end of Haunted and you can feel the emotion in Amys vocals, and Tourniquet, well it's just one of those you hear and fall in love with.
If this album doesn't feature very highly in my top 10 of the year i'll be very surprised.
Actually I think I might be turning a bit Goth, my current playlist seems to be this or Him (Love Metal), two truly great albums.
Now where's my black nail-varnish........

 Yay!, i knew you'd love it. In fact if you didn't i would have really questioned just how similar our tastes are because so far i don't think there's any band you've talked about who i don't like in some way.
I'm actually really surprised how well this album is doing. In Cambridge on Thursday and saw t in the top 10 album charts in Andy's Records and W H Smiths  not bad going off the back of one (maybe two) songs.
Hopefully people won't think they've 'sold out' just because they are getting some recognition.
Without doubt my band of the year.

Never been to the Astoria. Is it a big palce?, suitable enough to take my 13 year old sister?
EDIT:
Thursday, June 19 at 7:00 PM
CLEAR CHANNEL PRESENTS: Evanesence
No Under 14's / Door Searches Likely

Any 13 year old can get away with acting 14 if not older :p
I wouldn't worry about it as they're hardly likely to ask for proof of age.
Wish I was going :(
I agree, as long as she doesn't look really young I wouldn't have thought you'd have a problem getting her in.
She should be ok. I'd not been to the Astoria till last Thursday when I saw the fantastic Electric Six there. Great little venue - good views everywhere and a decent sound/atmos. It'll be a great way to see any band.
I had a guy have a quick look in me bag, etc, but not much more than that. I'm sure if she tarts herself up a bit, she'll look 14+
Do bear in mind though that it's where they hold 'G.A.Y.'
Yeah i know but knowing my luck we get all the way down there and they refuse. Having said that she went to my friends 18th birthday meal and all her friends thought she was the same age as them. So bit of a bonus for her. :D
I'm late to this thread, but I've just listened to the cd and think it is the best album I've heard for a long time.
I think "Tourniquet", "Whisper" and "Everybody's Fool" are brilliant tracks.
There again, I liked the last Creed album, so it's my sort of music.

I take it everyone on this thread is buying their single on Monday 2nd June?
It should be a number 1 single anywhere but knowing that the British public buy songs by the Cheeky Girls, I'm not holding much hope for it.
Some of the British public don't know quality music when they hear it.
Anyway it going up against tough opposition...One True Voice's new single
Will be the first single i've bought in a ges. Not seen what the 'b-sides' is yet.
it's a tough week for it though (aside from One True Voice!) as I think Marilyn Manson's mOBSCENE is out that day along with the simply astonishingly brilliant Gay Bar from the legends Electric Six.
If there's any justice in this world, the latter should rocket to Number 1....

Yeah, they're still together & working on the next album. They have a new guitarist now as Ben (co-founding member) walked out on them hours before they were due onstage in Germany. He found drugs & lots of them and is now writing songs for Avril Lavigne and Anastascia. He's got a planned solo album too.
any more news on these guys ? just started listening to their stuff again - really great to sing along to in the car !
website doesn't say much.Evanescence is in the studio working on new music. Check back to the site for more info as it becomes available.
In a post on Evanescence's official message board Sunday, singer Amy Lee wrote that she and new guitarist Terry Balsamo were in the studio finishing mixes on the group's upcoming album. "We'll be done mixing [the new album] next week! I can hardly believe it, we've been working on this album for so long," Lee wrote. "The stuff sounds so good. ... Wow, what a trip this has been." The singer said Balsamo is "doing really well" after the stroke he suffered in November  and that she's busy trying to figure out the order of the songs on the still-untitled album. "It's going to be hard to hold this music in all summer," Lee said. "I really want to thank you guys again for being so patient — I know it's gonna be worth it." A spokesperson for the group confirmed the post and added that the album is slated for release in the fall, with a tour to follow.Lee sued her former manager, Dennis Rider of Rider Management, in early December for breach of fiduciary duty, professional negligence, conversion, sexual assault and battery  , and other claims. Rider had previously filed a lawsuit against Lee over alleged unpaid commissions. Under the agreement, Rider Management was entitled to 20 percent of gross earnings. He is asking for a minimum of $10 million.so they've had a few problems, then ...

EVANESCENCE STEPS THROUGH "THE OPEN DOOR"
Band's New Studio Album To Debut October 3
Los Angeles (April 26, 2006) -- Following the multi-platinum, worldwide success of their major-label debut, Fallen, Evanescence is poised to build upon their respected position in the rock community with their sophomore effort, The Open Door, from Wind-up Records in stores October 3, 2006.
With what some call a meteoric rise to the top, Fallen brought the Little Rock, Arkansas band to global success with 14 million records in the hands of fans worldwide, two Top 10 singles, "My Immortal" and "Bring Me To Life," two Grammy® Awards in 2003 (Best New Artist and Best Hard Rock Performance for "Bring Me To Life"). Fallen spent over one hundred weeks on Billboard Magazine's Top 200 chart, was certified gold or platinum in over 35 countries Worldwide, and supported sold-out arenas globally.
The Open Door was recorded in Los Angeles at The Record Plant in early 2006 and mixed at the venerable Ocean Way Studios in March 2006. It includes the return of long-time friend and producer Dave Fortman (Mudvayne, Bif Naked). The new album is an ideal showcase for the band's inevitable personal and professional growth, with songs of introspection, longing, doubt, self-respect and ultimately, empowerment and anticipation. Several songs include a choir, as well as strings recorded in an old chapel. The album is defined by Amy Lee's beautiful melodies, profound lyrics, stunning vocals and poignant piano, which fuse with Terry Balsamo's urgent, yet intricate guitar playing, to form a remarkable, ethereal blend perfectly rooted in the band's rock and classical sensibilities.
"The making of this record has been really intense, but I've come out feeling purified," shared Lee. "I've grown so much since 'Fallen,' and Terry is the perfect writing partner -- I feel like I've been lifted up to a whole new level of inspiration and possibilities. After all the things we've seen over the past couple of years, beautiful and tragic, in the end I'm really grateful. It has made us create music I could not be more in love with."

I'm away. Shame, as what I've heard of the album is good.
I've listened to the new one for a wee while now and it's got some good tracks on it but it's just too samey. Like Fallen 2: Goth Harder.
I agree, a few good tracks but they've just stuck to the same formula as the first album. By the end of the album, it all starts to sound the same.... I still love her voice however. :D

i think the new album is utter pants. doesnt have any tracks which i like that much. shame really. i really think the guy who left was the person that made them what they were. :(
It's taken its time to grow on me. I wasn't a huge fan of the new single but i'm warming to it a lot. I think Sweet Sacrifice is a great opener but the album as a whole does tail off towards the end and get a bit samey.
I think they'll do fine without Ben Moody but they won't win over any new fans or convert those that hate them.
Similar to the new Audioslave album in that it does pretty much what they've done before without breaking any new ground, not something that bothers me but i can imagine how it may dissapoint some.

I don't mind them - it's all a bit daft but the new single is really good, lots of strong melodies and she can really sing of course. The album does start to tail off, I agree. What gets me is the unambitious playing - apart from the piano, the band are really musically limited. Lacuna Coil are the same. Maybe that's irrelevant but maybe I'd like to hear a guitarist in a rock band show off a bit instead of just grinding chunky riffs out ...
Admitidly i've only listened to the new album once but my first impression wasn't very good, i like the single so was expecting more of the same but it just didn't hold my attention for long.
Don't think i'll be going to see them live again, seen them 3 times already!
<---- back to the new Mastodon album

thanks for the link - early Xmas pressie for the wife - 2 seats front circle for Manchester. Don't think my daughter will accept 2nd ticket as it's seating (for us oldies) rather than mosh pit stalls.

You need to listen to Alter Bridge.
As this is an Evanescence thread, I thought I'd also put in here that there's a bargain over here (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6744506)

Ditto, the new single seems to be the best on the album and i really wasn't impressed with the rest of it.

F it, new album's great! Lithium and Your Star, loving those tracks right now!
First two tracks & the last track are excellent & worthy of being on the first album ... the rest, so far kinda all merge together into blandness .... hopefully will improve after some more listens.
This new album was quite boring and I was just waiting for each song to be over.

If, like me, you held off pre-ordering the new album, you can pick it up for £6.37 in Sainsburys (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=6775961)

I think it's a great album so far, in particular I think what they've done with Mozart's Lacrymosa is genuis.

I've been listening to 'The Open Door' today (heard it through twice) and am really enjoying it. Amy's voice is as beautiful and haunting as ever and some of the arrangements are stunning. If I have to level a complaint against the album it's that some of the songs aren't all that 'hummable' in the way that 'Bring Me To Life', 'Going Under', 'Everybody's Fool' and 'Call Me When You're Sober' are... although that may come when I've heard the album as often as their previous ones.
It certainly doesn't have the instant catch of the "Fallen" but I think it's a grower. Sweet Sacifice is superb.
Lithium,The Only One, Lacrymosa are all very good too.
I like the single too, but it seems strangely out of place on the album.
The first four tracks are really good. 'Call Me ..' is songwriting of the highest order. So it really annoys me when when Side 2 turns up with a big wet bag of damp squibs.
Nothing really caught my attention on the first play through, but after a few listens, I'm really enjoying the album.
I have to say that the later tracks don't seem quite as good, but I also remember thinking that about Fallen, and those certainly grew on me.
I thought it was OK - but I wasn't as taken by some of the tracks including Call Me When You're Sober as some people seem to have been.
I've done a review here: http://www.cdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=3487

The track "The Last Song I'm Wasting On You" has been leaked, not sure why this was left off the album!
just received this email 30secs ago ... :(
Due to a family emergency, Evanescence must unfortunately cancel the show scheduled for tonight (November 21st) at the Manchester Apollo. The band hopes to be able to reschedule the show at a later date and appreciates the support and understanding of its fans.
Tickets shall be refunded at point of purchase.
