According to the box the SE of Cinema Paradiso, containing both versions of the film, released today by Arrow is in mono. The R1 version is stereo. Looks like R2 has been short changed again.

The US edition gets a 5.1 mix on the Directors Cut, plus the packaging looks a lot nicer to me compared to the R2. Had a look on the Arrow Films website, and they make no mention of the audio formats. Odd that the Directors Cut is listed as being in 14:9 anamorphic with the Theatrical Cut being 16:9 anamorphic.

That's finally made my mind up for me; BTW the R1 is a suprisingly cheap £12.99 at play.com (the version offered up at dvdsoon looks to be the old single disk, though it has the new release date on it!)

Beware - Play may be offering the Canadian release from another distributor. I seem to remember complaints here when it was shipped. If it is, it will not be both versions.

The picture of the front cover's right and play's description says:

Contains the 2002 173-minute version (Digital Dolby 5.1) and the original 123-minute version (Dolby 2.0 Surround & French language track)

Can't be clearer than that...if it's wrong it goes back! But thanks for the warning.

I think this was just a mistake by Play in that in some cases they incorrectly sent out the previous isssue of the DVD containing the short version of the film.

The new Canadian release, as stocked by DVD Soon, is a crappy Alliance disc that only contains the theatrical cut with an Italian mono soundtrack :oh-hum:

Got the R1 this morning from play.com and it is the two-disk version; at the moment, this appears to be the best price on the planet!

So many films, so little time... Do you mean two-disk or two-cuts? All reviews of the R1 release state that it is a DVD-18

Sorry - single disk, twin-sided as you say.

Has anyone compared the picture of the R1 Miramax and the R2 CE ?

The R1 is cheap at DVDpacific, and the information is quite minimal, is this the version with both cuts ?

Im not too fussed about the 5.1 track, so will pick up the R2 version if the picture quality is similar between the regions.

The R1 ("The New Version") apparently has the better picture quality, the 5.1 sound is only on the director's cut. Both cuts are on it. It's dual sided as opposed to R2's 2 discs.

However, there's a new 4 disc edition coming soon on R2, rumoured to include the soundtrack.

This doesn't compare the R2 but shows the R1 transfer: http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/dvdcompare/cinemapardiso.htm
