What does everyone think will happen?
I reckon one of them four will be in the premiership next season
:p
I think wolves will make the finals but it'll be very tight. Sadly I'm going to miss the last 15 mins of the first leg

What about the other Leagues then, my team Lincoln, make play-offs for the first time in our history (only ever been Automatic with us :D ) yet nothing, Sky show both legs of Doncaster V Chester (second leg Bank Holiday Mon) so why not Second and Third Division legs. I know the the Final will be shown, but we won't beat Scunthorpe :(
A shame because ITV used to show every match in the football league

I reckon it will be a Forest/Wolves final with Forest to go up. However I am usually completely wrong.

Yes, a lot will depend on the result from The City Ground.
Well been a Forest fan means I'm a bit biased.
Hasn't the team in 6th place gone up in the past couple of seasons or did I imagine that?
If so i hope we keep the trend :)
I think we could beat Utd but we do have a very tired squad.

Norwich finished 6th last season. The team in 5th won it. ;)
As for the team who is 5th season, I'm not making any predictions until the end of May. :suspect:
Sheff Utd v Wolves final.
With...Wolves getting into the Premier at last!

After a disapointing season for spurs, Leeds not getting relegated and my local side going down, Wolves going up would be nice compensation. That and Celtic winning the UEFA and SPL

I think this is the key as in the league fixtures Forest beat them 3-0 at home and lost only 1-0 away so I think it can be done. When they came to the City Ground they looked very ordinary and Forest ran rings around them. Warnock will obviously have them all pumped up.
I've just queued since 6am to get tickets for the away leg as I am guaranteed tickets for the home leg by being a season ticket holder.
Just hoping Huckerby will come back and be that little bit of inspiration that we might just need.

Come on you Reds!!! (nottingham Forest)
Just depends on whether we show our true form as we can do, or a lacklustre performance.
Sadly I'll miss the 2nd leg and the final cos I'll be in the USA
I think we did well just to get here, I'd never have believed we'd finish in the playoffs at the beginiing of the season
Rik
I honestly think its a lottery. Wolves seem favourites, which pleases Sheff, Forest and Reading. Hy head says Wolves should have too much for Reading but we have beaten all three other teams during the season, so you never know. The 3rd placed team rarely seems to do it, though, do bad luck Warnock... ;)
As a Blade, I hoping for a Sheff Utd against Reading final!!!
I for one am glad we playing Forest at the moment, although after the away leg I may not be quite so happy. Anything can happen and has this season at Bramall Lane and hopefully the Cup style of the play-off will suit us.
As for shutting Warnock up, do you really expect that to happen wither way?? You Warnock haters in these Forums are too easily fooled if you think the play-off results, good or bad, are going to keep him quiet! :norty:

Bill Hill's currently have Wolves and Sheff Utd as joint favourites (2/1).
If we don't make it, I'm not really bothered who goes up. I've no love for Warnock, Forest and Wolves have history, and I wouldn't want to see Reading in the Prem (they'd deserve it, but I wouldn't want to watch it). Out of the other three, Forest will probably deserve it the most. They're the second best team that I've seen play at Molineux this season.

I'd like to see a Forest-Reading final.
Having Reading in the Prem will create a couple more derby matches, but then I've a couple of mates who follow Forest, so I wouldn't really mind which of the two went up.
I reckon it's nailed on that Sheff U will win the playoffs. They've had soooooo much luck this season. Sure, they've played well too but all the last minute / injury time / 10 yard offside goals have been unbelievable.

I think if Wolves win the game tomorrow by two clear goals, they'll win the tie. If we win by one or draw, it'll all depend on if they can keep up the current away form. If we lose (which we haven't done at home in 2003), I think we're stuffed.
It's interesting that both league games were 1-0 away wins, though. There isn't much between any of the four play-off teams this time.
I just hope that Reading don't come for a draw (which I think they will).

BTW Are you going up on the metro?
No one talking about the Forest/Utd match? Forest looked on top and deserved that goal but Sheffield sprung into life after that. The game has kicked in now
Can't believe Michael Brown got booked for his celebration yet David Johnson, who took off his shirt (FA ruling over that isn't there?), didn't even seem to get a talking to :oh-hum: :nono:
I would also question the fairness in Forest watering the pitch so close before the kick-off!!!
How is it unfair? It doesn't give them an advantage and UTD can do what they like at home.
That player was stupid for getting sent off though, god knows what he was doing and then he over reacts. Don't think it was a straight red though. The other player should have been booked for celebrating though but maybe the one who got booked went too far. I wasn't paying attention then
Very harsh red card I thought - I've seen plenty worse tackles punished with a yellow.
Kabba went down as if he was dead, stayed down, and was running around like a spring chicken as soon as the game restarted.
Bet Warnock says nothing about it - he'd have been spitting blood if one of his players had got a red for that.

unfair red definitly, Forest deserved to go ahead, silly penalty to give away, we were on top then and prob would have gone on to score more and win?
Never mind, we'll go to Bramall Lane and win there:)
Gutted about the game. Dawson potentially banned for the away leg (Ref has apparantly said he wants to see a replay) and I think if we could have just held the lead for 5 minutes or so another goal was in us.
It's going to be extremely tough at their place on Thursday and if they get away with the same kind of tactics they used at Forest and probably more besides we are screwed.
No matter how many times I see them play they always manage to wind me up!!!!!

Wolves defence is a mess at the moment and IMO Reading could get another before half time.
Reading are playing really well
Shaun Newton 1 - 1
The ref must be on crack, how he never gave a penalty for the foul on Ince I don't know, not that it matters.
Wolves 2 - 1 Reading
Naylor 84
:D
Kenny Miller injured while celebrating Naylor's goal
Confirmation that this ref is awful. Terrible decision for the sending off.

To be fair to the ref (and I'm not at all biased! :D ), it looked like a terrible tackle from where we were in the ground. The referee can't be blamed, as he doesn't get the benefit of seeing it 3 or 4 times on a replay.
In the second leg, if Wolves play like they did after Newton came on, I'll be happy. If they play like the rest of the game... :oh-hum:
Have to say that, other than some odd decisions my the ref, I enjoyed the Forest - Blades game.
Slowing the game down seems to be the best way to take some of the sting out of the Forest game. It struck me at Bramall Lane in the league game that Forest would be lethal if left to rampage forward at the pace they wanted to. There were times then when I was VERY thankful of the referee seeing that a ball was moving as a free kick was attempted to be taken quickly.
Have to say that I wasn't sure how the sending off would effect the Forest line up for the next game. Is he definately out? Can you appeal or have a 'straight red' withdrawn? something rings a bell about FIFA threatening the FA over allowing such dealings.
An away goal may yet be vital, but both sides are always a threat in their own ways.

Interestingly, the BBC are saying that Tyson wasn't sent off for the foul.
Forster was replaced by Nathan Tyson, who in injury time was red-carded for foul and abusive language after his late tackle on Paul Butler.

Well we didn't come for a draw, clearly ;)
Of course we never go for the draw and only drew 1 all season away, so not sure why you thought we would. I thought we were good value for the lead at half-time, but you grew in the 2nd half and probably deserved the result. Still close though for the weds game.

Well I'm Reading, but thought the sending off from what I saw at the ground was fair enough - it looked awful from where I was, we immediately predicted red before it was shown, and I thought the ref had no choice. The ref only made 1 bad decision to my mind, which was a penalty that Wolves should have had - but as they scored from the play that continued immediately, it didn't matter in the slightest. Frankly I've got no real complaints about the ref (and we lost!).
EDIT: the sending off wasn't for foul language btw - I don't know where that came from - he didn't say anything at all to the ref prior to the card - we were only 20 yards away - it was clearly for the challenge.

No you didn't (although you did in the league game). ;)
All credit to Reading. They pressed us hard for an hour. I don't it was so much that Wolves were playing badly. The forced tactics were just all wrong.
Newton has been ill all week (up until Thursday), so they were forced to bring in Ndah on the right. As he's naturally an attacker, we were playing with 3 up front, 2 in centre midfield and one on the left wing.
This made it easy for Reading to cause havoc down our right side, plus allowed them to double up on Kennedy (a sure way of stopping Wolves).
As soon as Newton came on, it all changed. The team became more balanced, we had more options, and Reading had to concentrate on two wings instead of one.
Hopefully, Kenny Miller will be back for Wednesday, even if Studger is a more than adequate replacement. I can't see Butler kicking a ball until at least August, though.

I think he'll be missing Wednesday's game (not a great loss, seeing as he didn't start the match)
I missed the last two goals :( Last I heard wolves had equilised. I tried to catch the goals on sky but missed them again. They showed them at the end but at an odd angle. The first looked like a deflection and the second came through a crowd.
Anyway a good result
Having watched the other semi I think wolves might manage it this time if they give it there best
I saw that report dmb6473a, but I don't believe it, and I'm not sure where they got that information. The report from the Nationwide site (http://www.nationwide.co.uk/football/common/topstory.asp?ID=54498&W=0) says it was for the tackle. It doesn't matter much either way though, like you say.

Just watched this after recording it last night. Its amazing how tension can make a game seem a lot more one-sided in favour of the opposition. I thought Reading were murdering us, but 19 attempts at goal against 7, and 9 on target compared with 2 (couldn't see the second one, myself), seem to tell a different story.
DJ better play 4-4-2 on Wednesday night though. :D
My dad, who doesn't like wolves, was saying how badly they were playing but I was saying how many attacks and chances they were creating and the goal came on a counter attack. The stats show this too. Wolves just couldn't finish it inside the box but they had the majority of the game. Look at the number of fouls reading gave away too.

Michael Dawson's appeal for over his late red card has been refused and he will have to serve the 3 match ban. :(
Apparantly that ref is going to be a Premiership ref next year, so no doubt they had to be seen as backing him. :nono:
Well it was going to be tough for Forest on Thursday anyway but now it's going to be a real hill to climb without his height at the back. Most games he wins 95% of the headers. :brickwall

Just off to the Majestic with Bick to cheer Reading on.

Well, in the days when the play-off final was over two legs, we got to the final stage. Then Aldershot knocked us out!
Not so with the ticket prices. I can't afford to go to the away legs each week, and the home season ticket will cost me the same as I paid 3 years ago. They've frozen the prices for those who renewed early. So its £260 for either 23 First Division matches, or 19 Premier matches. :D

This is the mistake that a lot of fans make. The better team isn't always the one who has the most possession. Don't forget that despite Wolves playing badly on Saturday, they still had four great chances to kill the game off (Butler's close range miss, plus 3 outstanding saves by the Reading keeper). You could see over the two legs why Reading have the lowest goals scored of the play-off teams.
Reading did last night what any trailing home team would've done. Likewise, Wolves did exactly what any leading away team would do. It's not pretty, and puts the fans on the edge of their seats, but patient football has been DJ's philosophy since Christmas. So far it has worked.
BTW Just noticed that the official Wolves website has reduced the booking fee from £12 to £1. Thats a bit better! :D

What a bet! Well done that man
Forest are 1-0 up thanks to a poor defensive clearance. They almost had a second soon after from a similarly bad clearance. If it had gone in it would have been almost identicle to the wolves goal yesterday
Make that 2-1 up! They get a fantastic second and then conceed from a deflected free kick. They almost got one at the end of the first half but the ref blew up. The shot went wide anyway.
Sheffield aren't living up to the favourites tag, they're doing a wolves

2 bad misses there in the first 5 mins

Some very bad defending going on though

I didn't register that at first. I was just focusing on the keeper dropping the ball like that. I thought the player did well to get it over the keeper. Not the sort of own goal you'd expect really!

Dawson's sending off on Saturday cost them this match. With his youth and Walker's experience I doubt they would have thrown it away.
Is this the first team Forest have been knocked out at the semi-final stage?
Thompson played really well though - I don't think losing Dawson cost us the game

You could see that David Johnson really cared after the match. He was crying more than my g/f after watching Titanic. I get the impression that you might be the next Ipswich. You may have to go through a few more near misses between now and then, though.

Its such a clash of styles between these two teams. You couldn't get too more different managers than DJ and Warnock. It seems to be Professionalism vs' Team Spirit.
Sheffield were making the most of the "We're Going To Cardiff" banner that Sky gave them tonight. Wolves apparently declined it when they gave us one last night (probably because we're not used to getting one! :D )

And really angry at 5Live - they wrote Forest off even before the game started - and the commentators seemed to have a thing against the Reds.

I don't like it when everyone thinks (or hopes) we will win. :(
- TalkSport presenters have been predicting a Wolves victory
- Warnock-haters want us to win
- William Hill have Wolves at 8/11 and Sheff Utd 1/1
Now all I need is a load of statistics (like Wolves haven't lost against Sheff Utd on a neutral ground since 1827), and I may just flog my ticket for Cardiff! I hate football!

Which is more less everyone, including me, but I'm torn because I didn't think you played well enough over two legs to really deserve to go through against Reading. So ideally, I'd like financial irregularities to crop up, both Wolves and Sheff Utd be kicked out the play off final and have it played between Reading and Forest ;)

Well we could've won 6-1 on Saturday despite playing badly for 60 minutes, and did a professional defensive job on Wednesday, plus won both games. So I think its fair to say that the better team won. :)
As ffc said (in a roundabout way) huffing and puffing for 180 minutes counts for nothing if you can't get a shot on target, let alone score a goal. ;)

I don't think I could stand a year of his moaning on ITV. At least he's hidden away on Sky at the moment.
Fergie gets my back up but at least I have respect for him as a manager. With Warnock you can't even have that.
Any manager that can tell his players to do some of the things that he's alleged to have done shouldn't be allowed to stay in the game IMHO.

The tie turned on Forster going off. I honestly believe we'ld have gone through if he had played both games. Our defence, passing and midfield quality was (is) very good, but without Forster we don't create as good chances or put them away. We have to buy a striker in the close season.

Seeing as the other thread is closed what do the wolves supporters think about next season?
I'm sure they're going to be optimistic but I just wonder if they realise the odds are that they'll be straight back down or struggling all season? It must be hard to come from dominating most of your matches and being on a high to having a season that's full of draws and losses. I'm not saying that will happen to wolves but I just wonder what promoted teams expect.
What do you think will happen then? Will they go and buy some better players to prop the team up and just focus on staying up and getting some money in the club?
I think Leicester are the most likely to stay up as they have a lot of Premiership experience in their team.
I think Porstmouth will almost certainly go down but I am not sure about Wolves. I think their team is probably more suited to the Premiership than Portsmouth but I am not sure whether they will be able to survive.

But that "Premiership experience" all comes from the squad that got them relegated so miserably last season!
But with regard to Wolves - I've spent a lot of the last few years moaning about Wolves fans who misguidedly claimed they "deserved" to be in the Premiership or were a "Premiershp club in evry respect other than on the pitch".
Well at long last I can now agree that you do indeed deserve to be in the Premiership and you are in the Premiership - see how you can't have one without the other?

Irwin will more than likely be going, and I don't think Edworthy is good enough to replace him, so we'll need more cover there. Also depending on whether Incey stays or goes we'd need couple of midfielders, also to cover for Newton on the right. I really don't think we'd need anyone else up front or in defence.
As far as results go, Leicester and Ipswich have shown before that newly promoted teams can get into the top 10. I think we play the right style of football for the Premiership, so I don't see why we can't do something similar. It's definitely going to be tough though.

But there must be areas where you can improve? I'd have thought a better striker was on the cards perhaps. How many goals can the existing forwards get against premiership defenders?
If you loose Ince, Irwin and another, who would you like to see coming to wolves? What about Kevin Phillips?

I think Miller and Blake are perfectly capable of performing in the Prem.
As far as playing against top strikers goes, Lescott will do fine and probably catch the eye of a lot of clubs. Butler, however may find himself getting turned inside out. No worries in midfield with Cameron, Rae, Kennedy and Ince?

Just got back, my throat hurts, and I'm not going to stop grinning for the next few months! :D
A thoroughly deserved victory from a very professional team. We slaughtered them in the first half, and the second went as expected with them attacking constantly. Our defence was rock solid.
To be fair, it seemed as though something was wrong from before the kick-off for Sheffield. We got off the coach and it looked like there were something like 500 Wolves fans for every Sheff Utd. I assume the majority were sealed off on the other side of the city. The atmosphere in the Cardiff streets was as good as I've seen. The only locals that I saw were working behind the bars and it seemed as though Wolverhampton had moved 100 miles west.
Inside the ground it was pretty much the same. With no national anthem, they had a sing off between the Sheffield and Wolves fans, with each set choosing one of their songs (I should point out that Sheffield were stuck with Mike "Squeaky" McClean from the Big Breakfast as their celebrity, and we had the very very very lovely Lisa Rogers as ours :norty: ). This was the first battle won by the Wolves, as most of the Sheffield fans didn't seem to have a clue what they were singing.
When the final whistle went, you could see how much it meant to the Wolves players and staff. Lee Naylor wins "most enthusiastic player" award (edging out Earnshaw of Cardiff from yesterday) with his "Bye Bye Baggies" banner!
Most of all, this one has to go to Dave Jones. If there is a more popular man in football (by his peers) then I don't know who it is. After all he's gone through, you could tell this was a really sweet prize for him.
BTW Now that we're up, I guess the Albion can't say that DORITOS stands for "Division One Rubbish In Tatty Orange Shirts". I prefer "Does Our Rise Irritate Those Of Sandwell". :D

When did they say that? Can't have been in a much better position when they did. Being in the relegation zone of the premiership isn't much better than in the top 3 of the first division.
Would have been interesting if they'd stayed up this season and then you'd have you're own midlands mini-league.

Finally coming down after yesterdays victory, my throat still hurts and I watched it on the TV, me dad phoned me from outside the ground afterwards and it sounded mental......
Oh well another very happy exiled wolves fan....
Ok it's tuesday morning and I still haven't recovered from that experience yesterday! DMB got it spot on with reagrds to the atmosphere, the wolves supporters were immense! We outsang the Utd fans both inside and outside the ground. The noise outside the ground before the game was manic, just around gate 6&7 by the river we couldn't hear ourselves think all we could hear was singing and air horns!
On the pitch there was not a poor player. It was a total team effort, the older guys like Ince, Butler and Irwin were all leaders out there, and the younger lads just the same. We have 2 players who will be in the England set up next summer - Matt Murray and Jo Lescott, they were phenomenal! :notworthy
I have to say I nearly passed out when the penalty was saved! I'd been screaming and shouting so much I think I ran out of oxygen to my brain or something, bizarre feeling, but WHO CARES!!
The crowning moment had to be Sir Jack on the pitch, what a man. He literally flushed £60 million pounds down the toilet, but he's saved this football club and put us back where a lot of people think we should be.
BTW Woz, Dream On! Just ur lot concentrate on not getting stuffed by the blooooze.... again! only joking m8! I'd still like to see all 4 midlands clubs in the top flight in a way, its good for the area - and not too far to travel for away games!

All four? Does that mean you'd like to keep the supermarket chain or the Polish team down. ;)

That's why I said in a way, because I can't think of anything sweeter than passing Sandwell Town on the way up!!
After the way they harped on about last season, and their frankly woeful season in the top flight it's sweet justice that once again Tesco town are back in the Nationwide where they belong, and oh yes WE ARE PREMIER LEAGUE!!!
I have to say I'm really looking forward to the incessant summer transfer gossip now!
So the music the teams walked out to yesterday what was that...it sounded familliar

Already got some for you! :D
Taken from the BBC's 606: -
JESUS ARRELLANO-mexican right winger is a world class talent £4m JAVIER PORTILLO-Madrid striker wants to play at highest level on regular basis(loan) DENNIS ROMMEDAHL-Wants premiership football and is an admirer of wolves £6m JOE COLE-This one is almost a certainty and will be a snip at only £3m with clauses making the total cost up to £5m.
Probably a load of old tosh, but this is what the summer is all about.

Portillo!
Not a chance in hell.
i heard cole was going to man utd for £8m.
but been as how dunn has an asking price of £5m i would be interested to see what he goes for.
One I heard was that bloke Bircham from QPR. He would cost little and Rangers need some cash after Sunday. Apparantly Jones has been tracking him for a while.
Although I love the rumours spreading around already!!

Polish team? Warsaw? I imagine the other is WBA so I was talking about the 3 that will be there next season and WBA. What division are Warsaw in then?
BTW, did any wolves fans tape the match so they can watch it again and again??

Rommedahl would be great. He's an absolute menace down that right wing.

Well being a true fan Si, I can see you obviously know the correct wording for that song, unlike all the woodwork merchants who were out in force yesterday in their old Good Year shirts (including one wearing the hidioues one that looked like the badge with the plunging kneckline) who were all singing
WE ARE PREMIERSHIP!!
I let them off seeing as they've had no reason to sing it for years and will need a bit of practice. ;)

Why would he want to go to a Premiership minnow, when he can come to a big club?
BTW Anyone having a flutter on Wolves for the title? At 1500/1, I'd say that it's money in the bank! :D

I'd heard the Bircham rumour, also. He doesn't seem like the right player for me, and he needs to get his barnet sorted if he comes down here. It looked like a Baggies shirt on Sunday! :D

I've got that one and my wife looked mighty fine in it last night !!:):norty:
Just because you haven't got the latest shirt doesn't make you any less of a fan...and if you check here for the last couple of years you'll see I haven't just come out of the woodwork. Living in Leicester it would be far easier to support someone else rather than putting up with the grief I've had for the last 8 years since I've been over here !!:)

Very true. I've been a Wolves fan since 1980, been to all of the dodgy matches in the late-80s (Aldershot, Chorley, etc), and have had a season ticket for seven years. Never bought one of the shirts though. They change them too often, and only can be worn at matches, on holiday in Spain or by people on council house estates. ;)

I worked at Tarmac in the mid-to-late 80's and we used to get free tickets to the games as long as we sat in the new Steve Bull stand (sounds so much better than John Ireland !:)) which at the time was at about a 30 degree angle to the pitch, so you were miles away !!

Not a peep from them on Tuesday though (or after the 4-1 FA Cup drubbing for that matter :) ).

The old joke about the John Ireland stand was that it had Wolverhampton Wandered away from the pitch!
Looks like they'll be knocking it down in a couple of years time and replacing it with a three tier stand (plus filling in the corners) to take us above 40,000 capacity. I'm glad they're waiting to see whether we can survive, though. We don't want another John Ireland stand/Bhatti Brothers fiasco!
BTW Latest player to be linked to us is Kevin Phillips. Surely he's too old and too similar to Kenny Miller (who is 7-8 years younger)! :oh-hum:

Don't forget where you read that first!
What are the odds for survival? I'd be interested at placing a bet for them to stay up

Why ? Why ? Why ? !!
Like you say, too old and too similar to Miller, who's probably got more potential than Phillips ever had...
Good news about not altering the stadium until we at least have more than one season in the Premiership though...it means I'll probably be stuck with going to see them at Middlesborough on a Tuesday night though as it'll be difficult to get tickets for home games...oh well, serves me right for being one of those 'out of the woodwork' fans !!!;)

It appears that the Kevin Phillips link is coming more from the player than the club. I've heard from two completely separate sources that he's been on the phone to former team-mate Alex Rae, asking him to tell DJ to come and get him.
Hopefully it'll come to nothing, as I don't think he's good enough.
Teddy Sheringham is the current name splashed all over the papers, but his agent has denied it. Not sure about this one. He's the right kind of forward that we need, but I think he's too old. He'd do a job for Millwall in Div One though.
The local paper was having a laugh the other night. Two players that they thought we might be interested in are Alan Wright and Ian Taylor of Villa. :gag:

I think DJ's a little too shrewd for that (signing has-beens and never-weres) and you pretty much won't have a clue who he's signing until he does so...he's not exactly been open about it in the past.
Until then, every player that's available will be linked with us...Ian Taylor can bugger off...he had his chance !!:)
