Ill have a listen and post my thoughts...If I survive. :help:

Oh well, lets have a listen....

Mr Stanton looks forward to hearing the 'Massive Attack' influence on the new album*.

*I'm not making that up BTW Mr Jones claimed that in an interview.

1st track 'Help Me' isnt at all bad...very Oasisy/Lennon esque vocals though.

7 minutes long too

Not bad so far

LouBarlow
10-05-2003, 14:08
2nd track 'Maybe Tomorrow' is a lot more mellow....sounds a bit like Sting to me though...

I can hear a Lighthouse Family influence here...no Massive Attack yet

Inoffensive MOR really...but too long at nearly 5 minutes...about 4 minutes too long.

EDIT : Ohhh a few beats in the last 5 seconds...very trip hop

LouBarlow

3rd track Madame Helga

Nuff said :gag:

LouBarlow
10-05-2003, 14:17
4th track - 'You Stole my Money - Honey' : Crap title but is the track as duff ?

Kinda Travis pace with some dreadful lyrics, but its not detestable....yet...its dragging a bit now though.

The vocals could cut glass for sure.

"Youve got no style about you"

You said it our Kelly !!

Arch Stanton
10-05-2003, 14:21
I've found it to download but it's more fun just to read Mr Barlows comments.:)

LouBarlow
10-05-2003, 14:22
5th track 'Getaway'.

OK Im really getting into this now....honestly.

Oh no its started with some 'Doo-doos !!

whispery vocals..a Godsend at this stage.

Some good things about this track, but some duff bits, notably the piano overdubs !....and harmonica !!!!

Not a disaster. Bad start though...damn those doo-doos !

LouBarlow
10-05-2003, 14:25
6th track - Climbing The Wall

You may well be by this stage of the album

This has started very badly. Trumpets and stuff..kinda like Jazz Club without the humour.

...only half way through ...damn.

This song would be decent without the wind instruments though..it does plod a bit, but thats alright. The banjo-esque guitar playing is unforgiveable though.

Jeff Beck does Deliverance !!

Next !

LouBarlow
10-05-2003, 14:30
7th track - Jealousy is a rare beast.

as a postnote to the preceeding track...I should point out it ends with some truly awful overdubbed vocals...the lyrics were dreadful too...

Anyway track 7 :

ohhh this is a bit lo-fi to start with...the vocals sound like Mr Jones was squatting in a dustbin..nice reverb.

More overdubbed guitars man ! Just hire 26 guitar players and be done with it !

Oh no he said it : <b> 4 and 20 blackbirds sitting in a street</b> WTF does that mean !!???

Nearly as bad as Madame Helga frankly...now hes changed 'Blackbirds' for 'Whitebirds'...and now we have a gospel choir in the studio and an overdubbed guitar solo ....

:gag: :gag:

LouBarlow
10-05-2003, 14:34
Track 8 : Im Alright.

Yes you are, but Im suffering now.

The end of track 7 was truly awful, surely this must pick things up a tad ?

OK THIS IS THE MASSIVE ATTACK track....

Beats for the first 10 seconds...then they stop LOL

"<b>1,2,3,4,5 now I drink a fish alive</b>"

The beats are back.

He is right, this is certainly as woeful as the last Massive Attack record, if thats the point he was getting at :suspect:

Another 2 minutes yet...damn.

8 down, 3 to go...

LouBarlow
10-05-2003, 14:39
Track 9 has absolutely nothing to live up to...and that first track started so well too ! :oh-hum:

'Nothing Precious' is its name and its certainly not.

Ive just noticed theres 13 tracks not 11...NO !!!!!!

OMG its gone massively trip hop now. Its almost as if Masseeve are there in the studio.

I think they are trying to do an 'Exile on Main Street' with this record, and its not coming off. Possibly because Kelly Jones sounds more like Lennon outtakes here rather than anything like Jagger.

Actually it sounds a bit like 'Tumbling Dice' by The Stones, but obviously with the added dodgy lyrics.

Not a bad track by any means.

LouBarlow
10-05-2003, 14:44
Track 10 - Rainbows and Pots of Gold (:gag: )

I guess you either love or hate Mr Jones' vocal style, but honestly this track is painful to listen to...

One bonus is there doesn't appear to be a chorus...not had one in the first 3 minutes anyway...

Oh well the strings are nice...erm...

LouBarlow
10-05-2003, 14:49
Track 11 - I Miss You Now

God another 5 minute monster !!!

Now I approached this record as a fan of their debut, but honestly with 2 tracks to go I can already claim this as the worst record I have heard this year.

A slow plodding track with 4 different vocal overdubs, at least 3 of them from Jones himself...nice.

This is awful. Slow 5 minute track...no description needed is there ?
:oh-hum: :|

I couldn't even bring myself to download this when I saw it on IRC today!
Still no sign of the Girls aloud or Cerys Matthews albums though...:(

LouBarlow
10-05-2003, 14:53
Track 12...nearly finished - wahooo!!! is called 'High as the Ceiling' wtf !! :notworthy

Well it starts well by being only just over 3 minutes long...

This will be a single for sure...only because obviously they are choosing the worst tracks to release as singles (judging by Madame Helga)...but this is worse than that.

Im embarrassed to have this track on my expensive hi-fi...and theres nobody else in the house at the moment either. Hope the neighbours don't hear it :(

LouBarlow
10-05-2003, 14:54
Huazza we hit the final track at last !!!

and its called 'Since I told You Its Over'

Don't sound so sad Kelly its nearly over now !!

Another slow burning 4 minute bloater...

Nonsensical lyrics and grating vocals.

Awful..awful I say !!!

LouBarlow
10-05-2003, 14:56
Overall :

truly, I wanted this to be a great record to silence all their critics...but its not...and thats the fact of the matter.

I would be suprised if even die hard Stereophonics fans appreciated this effort.

Wherever they went they should of stayed there...

Truly abysmal. :help:

Im off to get bladdered !

I thought that was a noble effort Lou, you did the forums proud and survived. :D

It was a laff reading your comments song by song, the first few are joyfully optimistic then the tone of doubt and pity (and sheer resentment towards the end, how dare they pollute your Hi-Fi  ) seep in.

Interesting comments from people who have only listen to the tracks once at the most. I have yet to find any album I liked from the first listen. Infact I've found if the tracks take a while to grow on me I like them more. Try giving it a second or third listen its the least you can do as its only cost you a few pence to download.

What rubbish.

Its easy to spot many a crappy album from one listen. Likewise its easy to spot a potential masterpiece.

This album is ****-poor no matter how many times you listen to it...and if you've never liked an album from one listen, dare I say you aren't listening to the right music :p

Not sure what you're suggesting here. Album's I loved on first listen (off the top of my head):
David Bowie: Hunky Dory
Radiohead: OK Computer
Supergrass: I Should Coco
...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead: Madonna
Fugazi: Repeater
Blur: Blur
DJ Shadow: Endtroducing...
Bob Dylan: Bringing It All Back Home

I'm suggesting if you only listen to an album once and then dismiss it your musical taste won't develope very far. There are very few ablums out there on which I can say I can listen to the whole thing without skipping tracks and I find alot of times tracks I like when I first here an Album are not necessarily my favorite tracks when I listen to it now. All I am saying is you are downloading this music for next to nothing and then after one listen slagging it off, not every album is a masterpiece but there could be a decent track on it if you give it a chance

Well I think you do Lou a disservice. As is apparent from all other times he's downloaded stuff, he does indeed listen more than once, and he has professed a liking already for track 1, if you read back.

I haven't downloaded it and am not interested. No one's suggesting there isn't such a thing as a 'grower', but some stuff will never be your sort of thing, no matter how hard you try.

All I am saying is if you are going to take the time an effort to review something it most be worth taking the time and effort to listen to it a few times first. I have heard the album 3 or 4 times now. I agree it is generally poor and tracks 1 & 13 are the only ones I will take from it.

The stuff's not too shoddy actually, though it's a bit overblown for me. I like the intro to "Comingout" a lot - more than the rest of the track (sorry). A bit too 'rock' maybe for me, but above the average of the bands I see toiling the circuit round here. Good sound on the MP3s too - nice and loud, and very tight recording. Do they ever play London?

No. I've only been to one of their gigs and I thought it was ace. My brother sings lead on some of the songs though - I never knew he had that good a voice until i heard him sing. Sadly the band are no more, due to uni etc, but he's hoping to start a new one, as he wrote most of the songs and the music IIRC.

My 'review' wasn't intended as a serious critic of the album FFS, it was a way to waste an hour one wet saturday afternoon. It was an attempt at a real-time review giving a first impression, nothing deep or analytical.

Saying that, your mention of needing to skip tracks on most of your LPs leads me to again question the music you choose to listen to.

Hey its your choice, but its the other way round for me. There are few long players, if any, where I need to skip any track.

I would have been just TGB or E=MC TGB - something like that. It was what I was using to play Half-Life at the time! :)

The Uni question was back to front really. I thought maybe he'd be in a Uni close to London and so would form a new band that would be likely to play round here. :D

I have in excess of 400 LP's for me to like every track on every album would be impossible, fortunately with todays technology I can take from albums what I like and not have to listen to what I don't like (after giving it a few listen's of course).

Hardly surprising this has turned out to be a load of *EDIT*. I do agree that the first album was good, but everything else since then has been dismal, grating, depressive, and downright crap. But of course, the Welshies round here will lap it up, claiming it to be a godsend :oh-hum:
