As title really...
I am going to see him next Monday in Brum and am interested in peoples opininons. I thought the last tour was stunning (and more effective than the U2 ZooTV tour).
Also, is there much in the way of decent merchandise available?
Thanks,
Stephen.
Haven't been yet but am looking forward to Sunday in Manchester.
I've read a few reports of the Euro tour and there is apparantley a decent selcetion of merchandise but is pretty damn expensive.
Monday for me too and I can't wait!
We even splashed out and are staying over at the Crowne Plaza so it's just a five minute walk back from the venue afterwards (and a party in the room) :)

Anyone know who the support is? Is it worth getting there early?
support is Blind Boys of Alabama, who did backing vocals on one of the tracks on the album

Really? That's excellent news.
well that's what www.petergabriel.com said the other day...
are they good then, can't say that I have heard any of their stuff...

Mmm, would like to get there a bit earlier after hearing that news. The tickets say doors at 6pm then at the bottom it says 7.30, i guess that means the support will be on at 7.30?

Me too I'm gonna try to get there for 7.00 just to be safe.
I wasn't sure that he would have a support act but am glad he has

Well, just got back and it was absolutely fantastic :notworthy
Superb performance, great setlist and the stage show just has to be seen to be believed - bicycles, boats, moons, fire, upside down walking, hamster wheels, torch jackets - surreal!!!
Still buzzin'
Back from teh show and I think WOW sums it up nicely.
An absoultely superb show almost 2 and a half hours of oldies and newies incorporated with a brilliant stage show.
Ebvery song weas great for but probably the highlights for me were (spoilerised in case any one doesn't want to know about the set)
Here Comes The Flood, Mercy Street, Growing Up, Sky Blue and, of course, Solsbury Hill
What were the support like? Getting very excited now :)

The Blind Boys are excellent. They are sort of a cross between the blues and a gospel revival show. They play for about 35 minutes doing 5 songs (I think) most of which you should know.
As for PG himself, the show is amazing and the man is on form. Not one dud in the whole 2 hours 25 mins, the new material really stands out and I'm glad the guy is brave enough to showcase UP instead of giving in to fan pressure just to sing the old stuff. Some idiots in the audience were shouting out for "Supper's Ready" and one guy kept yelling "Foxtrot" at the top of his voice-wisley Peter ignored all such requests.

They appear to have loads of tickets left...what time did PG come on ? I can feel a trip to the NEC coming on to reap revenge on the touts that have stung me in the past !!:)
Can't see me spending more that £10 to get into this one...

PG came on at 8.30 and played for 2.5 hours. It was definately worth the £40 I paid but I'm sure you can pay a lot less as there were loads of touts at Manchester doing very little business as the Arena were still selling tickets and, as the top tier was balcked out, every seat in the house was a good one.

I agree with your highlights Greg (More Than This also great). I truly think it was one of the most impressive gigs i've been to in a while.
I don't know about you but the 'oldies' are really giving the younger bands a run for their money recently. For the last 10/15 years i had a real hatred for Arena gigs and stadium bands. The older generation became sloppy, bombastic and self-important. I revelled in the Britpop era, got well into post-rock and just yearned new music, small bands and fresh ideas. BUT, this last 12/24 months i've seen Brian Wilson, Robert Plant, Arthur Lee, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon, Prince etc. (most of them i would have been very apprehensive about seeing 10 years ago) and they all seem to have a new lease of life! I think a lot of it comes from realsiing they need to give people what they want and with a sprinkling of passion and enthusiasm.
I picked up 2 tickets 6 rows from the front on ebay a couple of weeks ago for £15 under face value, judging by the 20 empty seats in block B in front of me the touts couldn't sell the rest.
Did everybody at Manchester spot the 3 loons standing at the front:nuts:
There was a guy next to me that security were taking a very keen interest in, he had removed his shirt and was standing in the aisle in some kind of a Gabriel induced hypnotic trance moving his arms like he was on the stage with the band, very odd:suspect:
I thought the show was fantastic, everything I expected and more, Here Comes The Flood is my favourite track from the 1st album and his solo performance made the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.
The hamster ball is brilliant and really thrilled the crowd
I thought the mix of old and new was about right as 99% of the audience would own UP so will be familiar with the songs.
For anyone considering going to see him don't miss it, one of the best live shows i've ever seen:thumbs:
The only let down was the merchandise price, £15 for a programme:eek: £12 for a mug £20-£30 for a tee shirt:oh-hum:

wack - I was in Block B and right next to the aisle where that loon was dancing up and down shirtless!! I think at first the security were concerned that he may cause trouble but by the end just let him off - he was harmless enough.
What were your seats then? I think mine were row J 13/14 in Block B.
have to say the set was fabulous though, really original the way it comes apart.
the missus isn't a PG fan but I dragged her along and she really enjoyed it also.
you guys with the shirtless nutter were lucky, had 4 lads in front smoking tons of pots and reaching some higher plane.. and is there any great need for people to have 1 pt of beer for every song?
the Blind Boys of Alabama were also excellent.

Just back from the concert and all I can say is WOW.
Absolutely magnificent by all. A nice selection of old and new with some beautiful theatrical lighting and sfx. The best sound I have heard at a concert in ages, too.
The merchandise was expensive, but of good quality.
If you are a fan of Peter Gabriel, go see it. If you are not, go and be converted.
Well worth the trip from Ireland and what a venue (nothing like that at home:( )
as above, just got back.... absolutely frigging brilliant.....
Birmingham Concert -
Shame it took so long to warm the audience up, PG seemed a bit fed up with the crowd apathy at points, or is that just my reading of it?
Low point - The last Blind Boys song, that lasted so long that I needed a skin graft because of the
Ian
p.s. Has he ever fallen off the stage in the zorb?
i did like the way that the zorb kept knocking over tony levin's equipment everytime he went past :)
you pleased with your row B seats Ixi?? i thought they were excellent even if it was a little loud at times!
and i did like PGs comment that the crowd were absolutely pathetic at one point ;)

Oh Yes  It was like a performance in your living room :)
Was the singer Melanie, his daughter? or just a family friend?
Were you row B as well, I hope you weren't sat down ;)
Cheers

Melanie is Peter's daughter. I like the way PG's introduction of her was not mawkish or patronising.
Looking forward to the Wembley gigs, hope the crowds are a bit more lively than the Manchester one.

I saw this show last night - to quote Gabriel's own song - What a show!
This was one of the best concerts I've seen in ages. I was surprised at how funny Gabriel was too - 'I would like to start the show the way I finished the last tour (pause) Thank you! Goodnight' (makes to walk off).
Some truly great songs, and the most impressive visualisations of them I've seen since the last time I saw Jarre live.
The only problem I could see was Gabriel was expecting the audience to sing along at one point - to a song that I - and a few round me - weren't familiar with! Still, Sledgehammer near blew the roof off the place, so I'd hardly describe the audience as apathetic.
Sky Blue gave me goosebumps - what a truly haunting song.
Please tell me there's gonna be a DVD - or a live album at least

I read on the newsgroups that they had loads of cameras at the Milan show and that he did some retakes so It's a fairly safe bet that we will have a DVD at some point
there was certainly a camera wandering round the audience near me.....
Ixi, yes i was row B as well.... fantastic view!! Not sure you could sit down really, would have taken the fun out of jumping up and down along with PG in the zorb :) - he must have been knackered after that!

We were in F 6&7, the guy that shouted George Bush was in front of me.
I thought the crowd was pretty good, it must have ****** PG off a bit to see 20 empty seats right down the front though.
The 2 guys and a girl that stood up at the front for most of the show ****** me off a bit even though they weren't in my field of view as people were constantly wandering up to security complaining which distracted me from the show.
Some people have no consideration for others, it's OK to think well it's a concert and they were enjoying themselves but if everyone did it the show would be stopped so why security didn't do anything about it I have no idea.
If I were sat behind them they would have sat down:mad:
I've been a Gabriel fan since PG 1 was released in 77(yes i'm that old):suspect: and loved every minute of the show, I just wish I had the time to go to wembley as i'd be straight down there if I did:thumbs:

anyone know what sort of time wembley gig tomorrow will finish?

Well I'm expecting it to end around 11. PG on stage at 8.30 and then a 2.5 hour show.
Most gigs end at 11pm anyway due to our arcane licensing laws.

May be a little later at Wembley as besides the Blind Boys there's also another support artist, Sevara a singer who has been helping PG out in Europe. I think the show will be over around 11.15 pm, according to my sources!

I thought the other support was for shows before Manchester?

wack - Yep, i heard the guy shout George Bush. Wasn't PGs response something along the lines of it being an insult to our simian friends
I did notice those down the front stood and dancing like fools. I know what you mean - either all stand and dance or all sit. You can't really have inbetween or people end up getting ******** off. I must admit though, everyone around me was having a great time unlike most gigs were some people look like they want to leave to catch the bus.
It was a truly great show and i too wish i could go to Wembley if it was a little bit more convenient.
If anyone's going to Wembley, he's on at 8:10 sharp.
Anyone know if Wembley is sold out - never got round to booking tickets and fancy poping down on the of chance if there are any left.

Unfortunately nothing from the European leg of the tour but I thought fellow PG fans may be interested in these 'official bootlegs' of the current US tour.

Not sure myself - anyone bought anything from here? What are the shipping costs?
By the way, the Growing Up tour DVD is scheduled for October (this year!).
