I love the Monaco GP, but this year, with one lap qualifying... it's going to be amazing!!!
Watch out for the Renaults! And Macs, especially MACs. Interesting to see how the Ferrari goes here.

8-] - Surely ITV mean the Q1 repeat is on Friday night not Thursday!!??
My predictions are for the people that have shown that they can consistently qualify well with the one-lap. e.g, Schuey, Button, Webber, Alonso, Frentzen.
Also the more aggressive drivers may do well if they get it right. e.g, Villeneuve and Montoya.
Should be 2 great qualifying sessions to watch. Especially Q1 with light fuel.

But isn't it virtually impossible to over-take meaning that the race is won in qualifying, or lost thru realiability or pit-stops.

I went in 97 when the German git won:oh-hum:
4 of us went through Page and Moy and got the coach down to Nice (Where we stayed) and they then coached us in to Monaco on Saturday and Sunday.
All I can say is WOW:thumbs:  :notworthy
All of the drivers are superb! You think the streets look narrow on telly, well I tell you they are soooo narrow it is unreal!
If you are gonna go F1 once, go Monaco. I think the weekend cost me about £500+ spending money but it was well worth it:D
I have been Silverstone twice as well but only the atmosphere beats Monaco!
The noise at Silverstone is good but in Monaco it's INCREDIBLE:eek: And you are so close to the cars
It sends shivers down your spine!!

It is sadly under the current regs:oh-hum: Lets get rid of the grooved tyres and give back the cars some mechanical grip
Bearhorn
27-05-2003, 16:59
Current regs or not - I don't think there has ever been a period where Monaco has been renowned for its overtaking opportunities.
Slick tyres, semi-automatic gearbox, active suspension and traction control on Nigel Mansell's Williams FW14B in 1992 still couldn't beat Ayrton Senna's manual , non-active, non-tractioned 6 inches off-line McLaren :notworthy.
I think this year the circuit has been reprofiled thanks to some reclaimed land so that the area after the swimming pool complex is slightly wider leading into a bottleneck at La Rascasse near the end of the lap.
Murray Walker The engine on Prost's McLaren is alight with a fiery glow as he heads towards the Swimming Pool.
James Hunt Well that should put it out then :notworthy
Monaco specialists include Jarno Trulli and Giancarlo Fisichella (not to mention Olivier Panis who's one and only win so far came in the 1996 Monaco Grand Prix).

Yes, there is a reason for this - it is to make the Grand Prix weekend longer so that the rich and famous and the hangers on arrive on Thursday for the start of the Grand Prix weekend and just spend all of Thursday evening through to Friday spending their money in Monaco's high-class drinking/eating/gambling establishments.

Yes, Thursday used to be first practice at Monaco.
The Monaco Grand Prix also used to start an hour later than the other races on the calendar so that the Royal family could have their lunch before enjoying the Grand Prix.

Impressive run from Button in the BAR, the car is very close to Ferrari speeds! Light fuel loads tomorrow? I don't see any point really, I guess it depends on if you can maximise everything in the race for the first 15 laps and don't get held up!

I think most have not noticed before because this is the first year of the 2 qualifying sessions, last year etc... was just practise on a Thursday and then qualifying on the Staturday. Most people never bothered watching the practise so never noticed it being on a Thursday.

Button will not be racing today.
I thought they might have let one of their Test Drivers (Anthony Davidson or Takuma Sato) race instead but this doesn't seem to be the case. Maybe they thought just an hours practice and then starting from the back wouldn't be worth it.

Kimi was saying that he never has any luck starting from 2nd place on the grid - he's got a point as that is the dusty side of the track.
Bridgestone let their runners down big time today. Only the two Ferraris managed to score for the Bridgestone teams and then not very well at that - 3rd and 8th :(
Ferrari are often the only front-runners on Bridgestone. Michelin have made some very good advances recently and Bridgestone need to improve their game.

The problem is that Michelin and Bridgestone employ entirely different philosophies to tyre construction with the effect that Michelin and Bridgestone favour entirely different conditions which this weekend's Grand Prix at Monaco highlighted.
Bridgestones favour a cooler 'green' track which hasn't been rubbered in such as was the case on Thursday morning when the Ferrari's were the class of the field in first qualifying and Jenson Button was third quickest on the Bridgestone shod BAR.
Michelins favour a warmer, rubberised track which was why their runners so comprehensively dominated qualifying yesterday.

Well done Kimi for that 1:14.5 :notworthy unrealnils - Ha!!
The big question for me is why oh why didn't they fuel the Ferraris to go to the end at the first pit-stops. James Allen said it was possible at that point of the race(lap 31). It probably would have taken an extra 5(?) seconds refuelling in the pits but would be well worth it in the end, negating the 26 seconds that all the front runners would've been losing for another pit-stop. Schumacher came out just in front or Ralf in 3rd, I think, so he wouldn't have come out too far behind the leaders.
The only reason I can think that they didn't do it was that it would have fed him back into traffic.

I think the answer lies in the Bridgestone tyre degradation and the fact that they would not have lasted long enough for a one stopper.
I was certainly hoping that when Ted Kravitz said that Ferrari were being 'brave' with their strategy it meant that they were one stopping Michael Schumacher - his pace at times certainly suggested that was what he was doing :p However, there was nothing brave at all about doing a late stopping two stop strategy :(

I took it to mean one-stopping aswell, after all the 'aggressive' strategy Ferrari were meant to be considering was because of their grid positions. I guess when it came to making the call at the time they didn't think it would benefit them.
Who would have thought...... almost half way through the season (7 of 16 races done) and a relative rookie leading the championship
The only thing is, Ferrari have tested the F2003-GA for thousands of miles on their test tracks, whereas I seriously doubt McLaren will have achieved the same by the time it's introduced in 4-6 weeks time. I reckon it will suffer for that, and new Mercedes engines haven't exactly been reliable in the past. Raikkonen is doing better than I thought, but ultimately I doubt he'll be champion this year. That said, glad to see it's him and not that muppet Coulthard.
From a Ferrari point of view, Schumacher did a pretty good job considering his grid position and the problems the team had with the Bridgestones. More worrying for the team, and something the commentators picked up on, was the poor performance of Rubens. He must be living on borrowed time at Ferrari, but I don't believe someone like Fisichella is the answer. They would have been better offer taking Raikkonen from Sauber (in exchange for favorable terms on their engine supply deal).
Canada next. Hope the ITV muppets bother to show it live given it's an evening race (UK time).

I think Montoya was pacing himself, which is why Schumacher caught up fairly quickley.
What was Ralfie doing? Had to reverse during the race!!!
Why do the ITV team think Firman is anything special? I don't think he's anything special. When he says that he's happy with 15th on the grid! I'm like WHAT?!?!
Fisi in a Ferrari next year would rock!

Overall this has been a much better season for the average racing fan.
Even as a Schumacher fan its nice to see young Kimi up there at this stage of the season and seeing Schuey having to work for his points.:)

Canada next. Hope the ITV muppets bother to show it live given it's an evening race (UK time).
Aren't they contractually obligated to showing the races (but not neccessarily the qualifying) live?

They have done recorded shows a couple of times over the last few years. Cant remember which ones but probably so it didnt clash with something vitally important like fame academy:oh-hum:
I'm pretty sure they've always shown the Canadian GP live and it's only been the Indy GP that hasn't. I guess we'll find out in time.

Yes, there has never been a problem with showing the Canadian Grand Prix live as this has always taken place on an early evening. ITV have shown it live every year.
One of my favourite Grand Prix on the calendar - especially given the time it is on.
I pray for better luck for the Scuderia and a return to crushing victories for Michael Schumacher :notworthy

M Schumacher drove a good race considering he had 31 laps of fuel, thought it was a good strategy! Come on Monty!!! :notworthy and your wife :luv:
They showed the TV times at the end of the race yesterday.
They said that they would show the Canadian GP live at 6pm in 2 weeks time.
Some of Martin Brundles comments where excellent. when he asked that footballer if he drives a ferrari and he said "no am banned at the moment". Then the comment about the camera man who was on the fast corner "Send that man a beer if he is still around after the weekend"

Except that the camera at the entry into the Swimming Pool was on the end of a big crane and the operator was practically sitting over the harbour some way behind it :p
Regardless though, it was an excellent site for the camera as it really shows the amazing direction changes modern F1 cars are capable of :)
My favourite Martin Brundle quote of all time though is his retort following a Schumacher interview he clearly didn't agree with:
Well I guess if your name's Schumacher, you can talk cobblers!
I've noticed that Martin Brundle hasn't been as obvious with his praise for DC recently.
Is he still DC's manager (or has he finally figured out what we've known for years)?

He is still DC's manager hence his quip about the DC to Jaguar rumours at the Monaco Grand Prix when he said that 'somebody should tell me about it soon'.
But to be honest - what's to praise with DC? 7th place isn't anything to write home about on Hotel Columbus embossed writing paper is it?
Bearhorn's amazing F1 trivia #27
This time last year Michael Schumacher was three races away from clinching the World Championship.

Yeah, I've noticed Brundle not really praising DC, quite cautious with his comments recently. DC will be in a JAG next year, he's had chances with MAC and blown it at least 2 times!!!

Respect to the Irv - did you see the totty on his yacht during the interview prior to the Monaco GP all just sitting there line astern waiting for their chance for Irv to come into their pit
At least Irvine doesn't pretend to be a great driver (apart from when Schumacher broke his leg and Irvine actually started to believe that he could win).
He's in it for the money and lifestyle

But at least DC didn't have these provisions in his driver's contract which the Irv did:
7.4 Non-optimal Pitstops
The Team reserves the right at any time to execute, for the benefit of Driver, a Non-optimal Pitstop. A Non-optimal Pitstop to include, but not limited to:
(i) making available and fitting fewer Tyres than the Required Minimum;
(ii) forgetting to make available the Refuelling Aparatus; and
(iii) remote switching off of the engine for a Specified Period,
where for the purposes of this clause 7.4 Required Minimum means 'Four' and Specified Period shall mean the time (in seconds) Driver is ahead of Schumacher as determined by the Official Timers.
18.4 FIA World Drivers' Championship
For the purposes of this clause 18, an Immediate Termination Event shall be deemed to occur if, at the end of the Relevant Period, Driver has accumulated World Championship Points the total of which is greater than the total accumulated by the Competitor who, at the end of the Relevant Period, is in second place in the World Drivers' Championship.

Hardly anything to download from www.f1onboard.com yet.
Do they normally take so long?
I really want to download a full qualifying lap.
I liked Irvine myself, and he did a good job of stand-in team leader at Ferrari in 1999. Would have won the championship too if he'd been allowed to at Nurburgring. :( F1 needs characters like him. He's what Jacques Villeneuve could be with a personality instead of being a bolshie French-Canadian who won a World Championship due to being in the best car of its day.

He was gifted at least 2 wins that season.... one by Schumacher and the other by Mika Salo (who on his first attempt at filling in for Schumacher was about to win a GP).

I would point out the similarities to some of Schumacher's championships but I fear the lynch mob too much.

An unashamed Schumacher anti-fan.

Just in case anyone's interested, I noticed a pic of the Bahrain circuit on my F1 browsing:
http://mysite.freeserve.com/haznick/images/3-picture.jpg
It doesn't look that thrilling to be honest. The only real overtaking places I can see are at the ends of the two parallel straights and at the end of the straight on the left.
The twisty left-right section in the desert looks mildly interesting though.
Can't imagine that many cars finishing the Bahrain GP unless some pretty radical cooling modifications are made to the cars. Bring back Spa!

 You need the best car to win the championship. Overtaking Schumacher on the outside at Portugal
Irvine didn't do a great job, but when the team is not 101% behind you...I guess it's difficult.

I think the race will be held early in the season to avoid the extreme summer season.
