The Official Uncut Gethinnadin Review:
....ummm...its ok.
The Man has spoken. Seriously though, one of the best roles I've seen Malkovich in - such a great character. However there appears to be no link to the previous (Matt Damon) Tom Ripley, like the love of Jazz and seems more like Hannibal Lecter Suave than Tom Ripley Suave. But its ok. Dont rush to see it though.

Ray Winstone playing a shady criminal type. Must have been a stretch. Malkovich was on Norton earlier in the week and he was hilarious. The very definition of dry wit.
Interesting to see what kind of career Dougray Scott is having after not doing Wolverine because of MI2. That’s gotta hurt.

Wasn't this book the basis of "American friend" with Dennis Hopper back in the 70's?
Yes, 'The American Friend' is indeed based on Patricia Highsmith's novel. (And I notice on the IMDb that there is another Ripley film being planned - current title 'Ripley Under Ground' - to star Barry Peppar in the eponymous role.)
Got the book 'Ripley Underground' as a freebie with esquire magazine a few years ago. Ithink it takes place between 'Talented' and 'Game'. Odd way to release the movies if you ask me.

I'm glad he didnt get to be Wolverine I doubt he would have been as good as Jackman has been

Agreed but I bet there’s not a day goes by Scott doesn’t wish he’d done it. Coulda been him filming Van Helsing now instead of Jackman.

Oh yeah I bet Scott is well peeved he missed out.The role has made Jackman a huge star.
just watched this (a few years late!), what absolute drivel!
Scott's acting was laughable, Malkovich was just being Malkovich and the script was terrible.
It just had the feel of a low budget Euro production wanting to be big bucks american (which i suppose it is). It just didn't work.

i dunno if i should believe you or believe this...http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/ripleys_game/
btw, anyone know what's the length of the extras in the UK disc?
I agree with ajw000, its an awful film. Dougray Scott is absolutely dreadful, an awful actor. Malkovich seems to be playing more of an even camper Hannibal Lecter, rather than the real Ripley character from the books. I think Rog Ebert said this interpretation was the most faithful, but that is absolute ********.
The American Friend is vastly superior.
The extras on the DVD are very short, as I recall.

I loved it, was criminally overlooked at the cinema, Malkovich is amazing in it.
Watched this again last night - have to agree with TheCookieMonster here, I think it is a massively overlooked film. Beautiful locations and music, excellent acting (whether it's intentionally hammy in places or not, it sure entertains me) and a flatness that really suits it (feels almost like TV movie in places, but in a really good way).

The one with Barry Pepper is also pretty good actually. Worth watching.

Barry Pepper's criminally underrated. That's what doing Battlefield Earth does for you (although it's obvious why he jumped at the chance of a lead role like that).
Hmmm, interesting, didn't even know there was a third film. Lovefilm don't seem to have it, so where can I buy it from...

You can get a boxed set of all three here for £14 (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=8&url=http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0014L3LFU/thedvdforums-21)
Or you can get it on its own from the dodgyest site known to man: http://www.cdzone.co.uk/rp=193164,info=3826844
