Child soccer star signs Nike deal

NEW YORK (Reuters) - He's not yet a soccer superstar like David Beckham or Brazil's Ronaldo, but Freddy Adu, a 13-year-old goal-scoring prodigy, has signed an endorsement contract with Nike, his agent says.

The agent, Richard Motzkin, of SportsNet in Los Angeles, declined to say how much Adu's deal was worth, although newspaper reports have put it at $1 million to $1.5 million (610,000 to 910,000 pounds).

Nike, which last week signed 18-year-old high school basketball star LeBron James to an endorsement contract worth more than $90 million, confirmed the deal but declined further details.

"He is young and we are sensitive to that," said spokeswoman Celeste Alleyne, adding that the company had not yet mapped how it would use Adu.

The Nike deal is a precedent for any soccer player, let alone one so young, in a country where the world's most popular sport has a relatively low profile. Top Major League Soccer salaries rarely top $250,000 -- a fraction of what players can earn in England, Spain or Italy.

A native of Ghana, Adu came to the United States when he was eight and became a U.S. citizen in February, when his mother won an immigration lottery. He has family in Potomac, Maryland where he lived until attending the U.S. Under-17 academy in Bradenton, Florida. He attends a school there.

Since joining the team in January 2002. the speedy striker has scored 32 goals and added 21 assists in 60 games.

Adu has trained with the US national team but at the age of 13 is still some way off signing a professional contract with Major League Soccer or with a club elsewhere.

On Monday, the five-foot-eight, 140-pound striker scored a goal for the United States Under-17 team in a 3-2 friendly international victory over Costa Rica.

In its report of Monday's Under-17 match against Costa Rica in Lancaster, California, the U.S. Soccer Federation said Adu's goal came "after finishing off a beautiful dribbling showcase."

"Freddy is a very exciting, young talent with incredible potential," said Motzkin. "At this time, it is important to provide Freddy with the right structure and atmosphere to allow him to continue to grow and develop as a soccer player and person."

A spokeswoman for SportsNet said Adu was focusing on the Under-17 FIFA World Youth Championship in Finland in August. After that he was looking forward to representing the United States in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.

It's not really a surprise seen as all the major clubs (plus plenty of others) are following his progress. If he lives up to his reputation and potential then he's going to be a huge name so Nike are just getting in before anyone else does. The popularity of football is constantly on the increase on the US and if proves to be one of the players that really brings it to the forefront over there then he'll make Nike an absolute fortune.

I hope Eurosport show the World U17’s in August as I really want to see him play.

Man United have contacted Adu's uncle Tony Yeboah about Adu being a guest at one of United's tour games in the US. He is also linked him with Inter, Real Madrid and Ajax.

So Fergie sniffing around:D

Nike signing maybe a Clue to his destination

Apparently he's the new Pele, Zidane and Ronaldo.

Inter Milan tried to sign him when he was 11 and even offered him £500k so he must be a bit useful.

:suspect:

That's not the World U17 Championships as it's too early. The World U17's are August 13-30 so I'm not sure what that tournament is, I guess it's just a friendly competition

What happens if he becomes the greatest footballer of all time and in doing so opens up the luracrative US market to football bringing in millions of wealth for Nike.

It's a gamble of course.

The hype around this lad is getting too much, but what do expect being Tony Yeboahs nephew? :D

I think it's an awful lot of presuure to heap on a kid. Obviously his parents have $ signs in their eyes and can't see anything else for it.

Lets hope he doesn't burn out.......

If that was true then he would have signed for one of Europe's big teams and recieved a sizeable amount to do so.

In the US from the reports I have read, he is hailed as the bright light of Football. Kind of like Rooney is here. He is already a fairly high profile player,so why not make cash from it?

He already has more press clippings devoted to him than most pro's have in their career....Examples:

The last thing we want is the those yanks thinking they are great at our magical sport. Like Legendary said, lets hope he becomes an alcoholic before he's 18. :D

I'm sure Nike didn't pay them a pittance.

The guy's probably already got an agent and no doubt there'll be irons in the fire.

There's no way i'd let this kinda thing happen to a kid of mine. :nono:
