View Full Version : Anyone actually bothering to watch the England game tonight?

Seeing as there is no thread yet I assume most people are like and completely apathetic about tonight's friendly.

I'm either gonna go the cinema or my local pub for the music quiz.

I'll have it on in the background probably.

Even though it seems Heskey is starting again. :|

I think the credibility of the England friendlies has been damamged by the '11 substitutions' farce of a few months ago.

I just think it is strange that only the other day Erikson was moaning about the length of the season and yet the last two games most of the squad would have played (after tonight) would have been meaningless friendlies

Well, I'll be watching it as I'll be physically at the game:)

I just hope its an entertaining game and does not turn in to a farce by having 11 substitutiona at half time.

But who cares , its an excuse to go out and get drunk !

Will be watching it, but it will be low key :)

I'll be watching it, hopefully Heskey, Mills and P Neville will have absolute stinkers and never be picked again.

Still can't understand why Sven makes so many substitutions and changes, yet is still going with Scholes when he has been utter garbage in an England shirt for so many games.

At least you won't have time to watch it with all the nappy changing and feeding etc.:D

I do wish they would set a limit to a maximum of 5 subs a friendly game. I just don't get what you can learn if you make so many changes in a game.:brickwall Surely what we want to find out is how newer players fit in with the existing team or trying existing layers in new positions or new formations. What you learn form playing your first team one half and your reserves in the second half I don't know.

Anyway I'll watch the highlights on BBC1 later on tonight.;)

exactly - I've gotta pop round me folks home to see it, but I'll be tuning in.

Shame I hear that Sinisa Mihajlovic isn't playing though - my hero! :notworthy

If Serbia get a free-kick on the edge of the area, I bet they wished they'd played him!

If it had been a qualification match then i absolutely would have watched it, but this has 'meaningless friendly' all over it.

Just look at the first XI too.:gag: Maybe if Gareth Barry, James Beattie & Scott Parker (who should have been in the squad imo) were all starting and I new they wouldn't be 'automatically' substituted at half time, I'd have a little more interest for the game.

Notice how there was some nice crisp passing along the ground without Beckham & G Neville. :suspect: (With the exception of Gerard)

It'll be interesting to see from the highlights who was marking the guy who got the first header for the Serbia Goal. (With all the hyping up of Southgate it'd be funny if its him)

Unbelievable. There must be something he does that manager employed by clubs can see that I cannot. His contributions at this level add up to nothing. It's a good job I don't work in football, I'd never be able to recognise a good player.

I think that decision is down to the individual grounds and not the FA. Thankfully the Millenium Stadium do not allow them and will confiscate them , even off little kids:lol:

Yet again there were too many substitutions (21?), and either the Leicester crowd are ***** or the stadium is poorly designed as the atmosphere was absymal. Saying that though, it was a refreshing change to be able to watch whilst the opposing anthem was played and wasn't drowned out by the booing.
Allthough there were far too many numptys with airhorns, it sure beats having the chronic Sheffield Wednesday "band".

A dull match but with some moments and individual play.
Good to see Gerarrd harking back to a few seasons ago and actually making an attacking run with the ball.
Another poor show from Scholes though. One or two moments of attacking, yet he spent the vast majority of time in the centre circle.

Apart from them, everyone was so-so.

Commiserations to those who watched the bbc1 who had to put up with Mark *****'s co-commentary.

I think it's because Rooney is the most exciting English footballer to come along for a dog's age, and Beattie is a mediocre footballer having a one season wonder.

It's Andy Cole take 2.

Indeed. Rooney was worth 45 minutes but Beattie should have started in Heskey's place. Beattie has done more domestically this season than Heskey ever has.

Watched the highlights on BBC1. Well I say highlights but what I actually watched was Lineker shaking hands with everyone, a bit of football, a couple of goals. It then got exciting as we had five minutes of listing who had come on for the second half, bit more footy, some more subs, Watching Rooney lying on the floor then see him limp off the pitch, a bit more football and another goal. Then watched five minutes of Sven and his stars talk, followed by Gary and chums talk about the game for another five minutes.

The programme was only 30 minutes long and there could only have been 10 and 15 minutes of highlights, what a waist of time watching that was.:brickwall  :brickwall

Why o why didn't Sven try Rooney or Beattie to start with. We know what the Owen/Heskey partnership can do.:brickwall

On a positive note it was nice to see England doing some short acurate passing instead of always looking for that killer ball over the top.

Beattie has been steadily improving each season last season he had injuries but still scored 12 league goals in 24 games in a Soton side who where very poor at the start of the season.

This season he has 24 goals he deserves a chance which is what Friendly's were for ...of course Sven prefers to play musical chair's and turn the thing into a farce....:brickwall

Today's poll at football365:

Which would make a better captain?

Emile Heskey 20%
Phil Neville 19%
An armband 60%

:D

Kronik
05-06-2003, 11:39
But to be fair Owen's a useless captain too. When do you ever see him trying to Rev up the team?

ffc
05-06-2003, 12:37
Carragher got it as well at the end. Anothrer worthy candidate. :brickwall :brickwall

At least Sven apologised for the debacle. He acknowledged that the armband should have gone to James who he knew would not be subbed.

On the same subject besides Beckham who of the current crop of players is worthy of the captaincy? I reckon:

G. Neville (I'm not sure if his football is worth a place though)
Ferdinand
Campbell
Butt

and

John Terry if picked

Raphph
05-06-2003, 13:12
I think Heskey meant to throw the armband to James but as his aim was so poor it hit Neville.
