View Full Version : Enter The Dragon
Ok - anyone know what version of this is the 'best' to get. I'm after an uncut version. Theres some new versions of this film out shortly.
Play.com have two versions due out 8th October... both are R2,
* Enter The Dragon Box Set for £17.99 - extra bits plus postcards..etc
* Enter The Dragon Special Edition £14.99
Ezydvd have a Special Edition version out for $26.32 (after GST). This is released on the 26th of September. I couldn't find a boxset version.
Ezydvd also have Bruce Lee: A Warrior's Journey for $29.95 (after GST) - This looks to me like a documentary.
Play have Enter The Dragon / A Warriors Journey for £28.99.
Also looks like the R1 version of Enter The Dragon already has 5.1. absound have a R1 version for $US 12.92.
Decisions decisions. Thanks for any info.

at the moment the best version is the r1 version
but the r2 version out in october will have more extras (e.g. more tv spots)

What will the upcoming R2 release have as an advantage over the other regions?
is it just the added tv spots?
The new R4 release , is this cut?
ideally this would be the best version[assuming its uncut and all the extras are the same as the other regions] as its the one that will be presented in lovely Amaray cases?
please can someone clarify this for me
as im tempted to go with the R4

The new R2 should be uncut which is a big bonus over previous R2 releases and probably the same extras as R1 (but more than the previous R2). Not sure if it's a different disc to the R1, though I doubt it.
The boxed set isn't by Warner but a repackaging company (Metrodome in the UK who licence the boxes from Creative Design Arts in the US) who just take the Warner DVD and shove them in a box with a booklet, film cell, postcards and audio CD.
Not all these sets are any good (especially when the disc inside it pants, e.g. Bladerunner).
I will say however the R1 Enter the Dragon set is excellent. A good disc for a start (short of excellent but still good). Don't treat it as an official special edition, but the contents are good, especially the book. In R1 this is a full-sized (A4-ish in size and quite thick) box, and the book is a large glossy and rich content book.
However, these boxes have recently started being released in 'micro' size (e.g. recent 2001 box), where it's no more than a slightly thicker DVD box with a booklet (i.e. flimsy and very small writing), film cell and CD. In the big boxes you get the original cases for the DVD and CD, but the micro cases you just get the discs stuck in holders on the inside of the case.
I would say that if the R2 set is the large set then it's well worth getting, otherwise I wouldn't bother. You buy these things for collectability and impressive looks after all and the big set is impressive.
Hmm, interesting, just saw on www.metrodomegroup.com that there are a couple more Kubrick sets coming up (will probably be the naffer small cases though) for Full Metal Jacket and Clockwork Orange. 5th November.
Heres 2 reviews for the R4 version....

In the end I went for the R4 version from http://www.fbo.com.au/ ($29.90 delivered) although they can a rather convoluted method of payment requiring authorisation first though :( They basically deposit two payments into your account and then you have to tell them how much they have deposited. You get to keep the money they've deposited though. You only have to do this once.

I think the boxed set could be a small or less-featured box compared to the R1. For a start, it's £17.99 from play compared to about $80 for the R1!
And the box doesn't have the 52 page glossy book.
Anyway, another thread here (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=20991). Has pics of the boxes. No nunchuck poster on the cover, but then I'm not surprised as that was censored too, and I bet they'd still not allow the posted with nunchucks (would come under different rules than BBFC certs).
I have the R1 version of Enter The Dragon. I'd go for the R4 new release of Enter The Dragon, it'll be cheaper, uncut, and in an amaray instead of a snapper.
Your choice, but I think all regions will probably be the same, but I'd go R4 because of the better PAL picture and amaray packaging. And the exchange rate.

You can get the R1 from futureent for £9.99.
Ok so its a snapper, but for gives a ........
Does WB hope to make any money from the R2 release ?, any real Lee fan would have brought this baby time ago !.

Come on Jimmyboy, don't be naive ... of course WB expect to get money from it! After all, Lee fans will already have bought the film on video and on DVD ... only to have to buy this version. What I want to know is though ... is the print in a better state than the previous R2 ... which was really disappointing with plenty of print damage.

er how so?
i thought they were identical in terms of features , with the R2 gaining in a few extra tv spots.
where did u get these so called missing details from?
and im still not sure as to whether the R4 is uncut, those reviews posted above are inconclusive, it doesnt say anywhere that it is DEFINATELY UNCUT
we need more info
Points raised thus far :
R1-is better and has more features-according to jimmyboy?
substantiate please
R4-is it uncut? I NEED TO KNOW FOR DEFINATE
R2-Nice little box set but is missing some features and is more expensive.
Verdict: Open
^ for further deliberation
At least we know now that unlike other creatures a dragon can change it's spots. I'm sorry, couldn't resist. ;)
These latest Region 4 reviews should help - they state that the version is fully uncut:

Micheals R4 review site lists all the things missing from the R1 version.
As its R2/4 encoded its safe to assume this is the same for the R2 release.

DR m8, did you not read what I just said ?.

The Region 4 misses out on:
Significance of Belts in Martial Arts (2 pages)
Heir to the Throne - Jackie Chan (6 pages + filmography)
Retrospective of Hong Kong Martial Arts Films (19 pages + B&W outtakes from Enter)
Behind the Scenes - 6 pages
Reel Recommendations - 16 movies (all fairly rubbishy mind you)
Subtitles in French and Spanish
Its encoded R2/4, so the UK release will contain the same missing features.
Also, They claim that the R1 release don't contain an isolated music score, when infact it does.
Unless your absolutly gaggin for an Amaray case, and prepared to pay a good £5 - £10 more, then the R1 is the way to go.
Ok, which has the best picture quality ? I don't give a toss about extras.

Given that the R1 disc has seven TV spots already, how many more do you need? :D
Incidentally, these TV spots aren't mentioned on the back of the box, so I strongly suspect the R2 actually has the same TV spots but the packagers decided to mention it this time round!

Well the R4 review suggests that the PAL picture is slightly better, although I'd be surprised if this was actually true given the mistakes already made about the R1 which seems to suggest they havent watched the NTSC version themselves.
I doubt very much that there will be a massive improvement in regards to the PAL vs NTSC issue either given the age of the film.
The R1 is so cheap now anyway, and as ive said already, unless your prepared to pay an extra £5 - £10 for the smug feeling of owning an Amaray case, there's no real reason to buy any other region.
