I've manage to scrape £150 to buy a DVD player. Which one should I buy and where from
Can you help?
Tescos Cambridge had the Wharfedale M5 for £149.99 last week, I assume this is the case at all tesco stores, may be worth ringing a local one to find out.
I'm thinking LG 4710 with the free DVDs.....from Dixons

Sorry to hijack your thread Stuart, but I'm in much the same boat as yourself and would welcome any advice.
Stuff I've been looking at include the LG thing in Toys R Us, the Wharfedale M5 and the Minato from Tesco.
Are they all handset hackable? Is one particularly better than another? Are there particular versions / serial numbers I should look out for? Is it me, or is the Minato in short supply at the moment?
Thanks in advance for any help.
I have just bought a Wharfedale M5 from Tescos and it is brilliant! Just make sure that the serial number begins 127xxxxx or later (mine is 128xxxxx) and the manufacturing date is 3/2001 or later.
Earlier nodels used a dodgy drive inside apparently.
Anyhow, I am very very pleased with the M5 and plays all dvds so far. Even plays cds with MP3s on, CDRs, CDRWs etc etc.
I am not completely sure but I think the LGs won't play CDRs which may or may not be a problem for you.
It is also easily region hackable via the handset and handles RCE disks as you can set the individual regions as well as an auto setting.
You can do worse than buy the Pacific dvd1000 from Asda.
It plays dvd/vcd/cdr/cdrw and even mp3s.
Not bad for £100.
I just bought mine yesterday and am very happy with it,although no-one seems to know if there is a multi region hack for it.

:) Well I bit the dust and bought the Wharfedale M5 from Tesco at Barrow.
I understand these are only available from Tesco Extra stores and not on the online sales......
So I am very impressed with the M5, straight out of the box, plugged in and I've not looked back
Thanks for the advice to those of you who took the trouble to reply !!!!!
I have also just bought a Wharfedale M5 from Tesco. It looks the business but i cannot get it to play any of my region 1 discs no matter which TV type i i select in "general settings"Can you tell me if this is hackable and if so how is it done. Many thanks.
Gotta be said, LG are pretty good. I have a 3200 and its taken everything i have thrown at it. Quality for a budget player is spot on imo. I had a Wharfie 750 before it and the LG wins hands down. :)
I have just got an LG4710 for my parents from DABS.com for £128 delivered. Multiregion (RCE Proof) in seconds and is a superb player for the money, would highly reccomend one, am considering getting one for a bedroom player for myself.
Bought a LG 3000E from Tescos online for the in-laws this week.
Having a play with it before handing it over it seems quite nice. :)
I seem to remember there are limitations with reading CDR/CDRW - though I have read on this forum that someone has CDRW's working with theirs.

You should set TV type in the General Set Up Menu to "PAL"
The region hack is SETUP and then 6,2,8,3,6 - use arrow keys to change to BYPASS, hit ENTER and then SETUP again - that's the multi-region hack taken care of :D
Why not check out Area 450 (http://www.area450.com/hacks.htm) which is my website for all Sampo-manufactured players. There's also a very lively M5 owners bulletin board at The Forum which you may care to have a browse thru :)
