The R1 is out on November 6. The R2 is out on November 5. The R4 is out on November 21.

Can anybody give me more than the feeble and incredibly patchy information available from various online retailers about the differences between them, in terms of commentaries and other features? The three-way commentary of R1 seems as though it might have been edited down to a one-person effort for the R2, if you can believe what DVDBO, Blackstar and DVDStreet have to say. And do the R2 and R4 discs include all the many featurettes listed for the R1 release? Is the R2 or R4 edition even widescreen???

Please help...

Up...c'mon, someone must have some information. I know it's not the goriest/most violent/most sexually explicit film ever made, but still...
:)

It isn't? Damn, I might have to cancel. No seriously I don't think there was any difference between regions for Lawrence of Arabia or Bridge On The River Kwai so perhaps this will be the same, although this is Warner and the other two were Columbia Tristar so who can say. Here is the info for the Region 1 release and if I have anything to add about other regions I'll post again.

The film has been given a brand new digital transfer from refurbished elements and will be released in an anamorphic widescreen presentation of the films original Panavision 2.35:1 ration. The sound has also been restored and remixed in a new Dolby Digital 5.1 track. In addition to the restored video and audio, Omar Sharif, Rod Steiger and the director's wife Sandra Lean have reunited to contribute to the new DVD. An Introduction by Omar Sharif begins the film. An audio commentary by Lean, Steiger, and Sandra Lean will accompany the film. Additional features include a 30th-anniversary behind-the-scenes documentary Doctor Zhivago: The Making of a Russian Epic, 10 vintage documentaries profiling the production and its stars, an isolated music-only audio track highlighting Maurice Jarre's Oscar and Grammy-winning score, Vintage audio sound bites of cast/director interviews and the December 1965 New York premiere, cast/director career highlights, and a theatrical trailer.

Region 4 information (taken from DVD Debate)

November 21st sees Warner Home Video's release of a Doctor Zhivago 2 Disc Special Edition. The main feature will boast a brand new refurbished transfer and a DD5.1 audio track.

Coming in at just under six hours, the extra features include a new feature-length commentary by Omar Sharif, Rod Steiger and Sandra Lean (wife of director David Lean), an introduction by Omar Sharif, Doctor Zhivago: The Making Of A Russian Epic documentary, 10 vintage documentaries, a music-only audio track, vintage audio sound bites of cast/director interviews, cast/director career highlights and the theatrical trailer.

Looks the same to me :)

No reason to think Region 2 will be eny different. Which probably means Region 2 will be different. ;) :D

Excellent, JohnMac...thank you! :)

Just hoping they don't suddenly go all P&S on me for the Region 4....

My Citizen Kane 2 disc set from Warner isn't a snapper and I doubt the 2 disc set of Doctor Zhivago will be either. You could always order from Region 4 if you are not convinced though.

However, just to contradict myself, the Region 2 cover looks very different to Region 1 & 4 which both look the same. Even the Region 2 extras listings seem different to me also, so I'd hold off on pre-ordering Region 2 for now until it is confirmed. However, if you want Doctor Zhivago, Ben Hur and Gone With The Wind they are being released in a box set for only £32.99 from Play. Perhaps this means that Region 2 will be a dual sided disc in a snapper case, I don't know.

I won't preorder it.. I never do until i'm sure of the case and extras.. so I'll wait and see... Even if one region has production notes and the others dont, then i'll get that!! I ALWAYS get the one with most features... LOL :) heheh... thanks for the info....

The Norwegian R2 release of Doctor Zhivago SE (which is the same as the UK one) has been out for months.
It is in a cardboard digipack style type case, exactly the same as Citizen Kane R1

...which turned out to be perfectly excellent, and probably the best combination of features, price and packaging! :)

Ah yes, 2001, those were the days... ;)
