I've been looking to buy a new DVD after my Samsung 511 died on me. I've seen a Sony dvps-356 reduced to £199 in a local shop as they're having a sale (they reckon from an origianl price of £289). Only I can't find any reviews of it anywhere. I'm assuming it's been discontinued (hence the low price). But is this cos it's got problems or is rather out of date these days?

Any advice gratefully recieved

Jerry

my first go on this site and I mis-type, what a great start.

The 535/6 were originally around £350, so £199 is a pretty good price, but it is now a discontinued model and it'll cost you another £50+ to make it multi-region (more or less a necessity nowadays).

There's a decent priced multi-region player here (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19084) for £200 which might interest you, but I've no idea how it compares to the 536.

Oh, and if you click edit on your first post, you can amend the thread title. :D

Cheers for that.

To be honest I wasn't going to go multi-regional (pause for shocked cries). I'm not bothered about gettting movies before they come out in the UK, as I've had a quick look at a few sites and they don't seem to be much cheaper (once you've paid for P&P etc). As long as it plays UK ones, and plays them well, then I'm happy.

Hmm..

Whilst it may be true the prices are getting closer (Simpsons being a massive exception R1 £18 vs R2 £35+!!) R1s are generally still cheaper. The major advantage though is R1 & some R4 discs are normally released months before the R2 versions are out over here.

Of course, if you aren't bothered about saving a couple of quid per title & don't mind waiting then by all means stick with a single region player. :p

Your loss. :D

...and the extra features that you often get on R1 versions as well (inc. DTS soundtracks etc).

jerryg,
ignore Baps, he's one of the many that trawl the net trying to get his copy of a DVD before anyone else! I have a region 2 536 and found it to be a very dependable player. I can honstley say no disc I own (100+ titles and counting) have tripped it up. It developed a fault last month but I had it repaired by the official Sony service agents no problem at all. Not sure a modded player would not have presented them with problems. The player has limitations in that it is designed not to play CD-R's and CD-RW's but even this can be overcome if you can find the correct brand of CD-RW's and burning software. At the price quoted there are new players that will perform well but few that will have the quality and looks of the Sony. Hope this helps...

Ermm..

You're happy with your R2 player fine, I should think a vast majority on this forum wouldn't be though. So I'm sorry mate, but he's asking for opinions. I've given him a few reasons why a multi-region player is a pretty good idea. And for the record I haven't bought a new DVD for 2 months so you can SMB!!

Of course, he's free to ignore me as is anyone else come to that, without prompting from yourself, but to tell someone to ignore the benefits of a multi-region player (536 or otherwise) is rather blinkered.

And if you're gonna decide on which player to buy just by how it looks on your shelf, then well.......

Thanks for the advice Cable Monkey and Babapap. I now know about the Sony 536 from an owner which is great thanks. And have a better knowlege of mulit-regioning. Although I am siding against it to be honest, I'll give it a bit more thought and won't dismiss it as I did before, for the sake of an extra £50. I was worried about warranties etc, especially after my last DVD died on me, but as most (if not all) places seem to give their own warranty with pre-multi regioned ones, it's not such a problem.

I'll be sure to let you know what I went for.

Both about the Sony 536 and about getting a multi-region machine. The Sony is still top of my list I have to admit, as I have a few Sony items and they tend to be reliable. But I will give getting it chipped for an extra £50 some thought.

All depends on how my car does getting through it's MOT this week
