View Full Version : Widescreen TV recommendations ?
Hi, I wondered if anyone had any opinions on the following widescreen TV's that I have my eye on.
Phillips 28PW6315C
JVC AV28WFT1EK
Thanks,

Both very nice. They BOTH use a Philips Blackline S tube so have a similar picture (JVC buy them from Philips). I'm about 99% sure on that, but not 100%
The big differences though are;
Philips one has Dolby Pro Logic (and quite good speakers)
JVC is just Nicam (and not the best speakers ever)
JVC has a flat screen
Philips has a 'not quite flat' screen (Philips called it "Ultra Flat" I think).
Both are very good though, and have both reviewed very well. Some slight concerns on the JVC have been raised about a concave bend geometry problem on the left side of the screen. It's there on all models, but can be LARGELY fixed by an engineer if you call one out.
John
Thanks for the info. The Philips looks a nice set. I am looking into this for my Mum and Dad who are after a new TV, so its not going into a high end setup or anything like that.
A local dealer has it for £499 also on interest free. Is this an average price ?
Thanks again,
Matt

As the cheapest web price is about £85 more than that, Id say thats a very good price.
If you did not need interest free credit, you could get a 32" Philips PW6006 from unbeatable for £500. They are coming in soon.

The JVC set is superb although,as mentioned the sound isn't stunning (not a concern if theres amps and speakers involved!:D )
The geometry problems can be easily sorted via the service menu that someone posted a few weeks ago, sorted mine a treat. This set can be had for around the £480 mark from Empire Direct (http://www.empiredirect.co.uk)

The Philips PW6006 are good tellys. You can get the 28" model from www.unbeatable.co.uk for a piffling £319 (without the stand) at the moment. Nicam, Ultra Flat screen with a very nice picture quality indeed.
I think I am going to recommend the Philips to them. It seems a decent price and 28" is plenty big enough for the living room. There is also the plus point of interest free credit.
Thanks for the tips,
Matt

John Jennings, do you have a Philips PW6006 and if so how are they at handling NTSC ?
I only ask as Im thinking about getting the 32" for £500.

No problems at all with NTSC. It can handle it as pure NTSC and that weird PAL60 thingy (I think these are called NTSC 4.43 & 5.58 if memory serves). I've tried both (my DVD player does both) and there are no problems at all.
I have a Philips 32pw6615. The sound quality is very poor on quiet passages. The set has been back to the shop & to Philips' repair agent & they insist there is nothing wrong with it. And it whistles. And it buzzes.
I have to put up with it now, but it still annoys me like hell. I really wish I could afford to write it off.
So, if they go for the Philips, make sure your parents have a good listen to it, and they are happy with the quality.
(edited to tone down the ranting)
