Time for some input to help a newbie out.

I have a Wharfdale 750S DVD player and want to set off into the world of DTS.

I dont know much about the technology, but here's the info that appears to be important.

Budget = £300

Room Size = 12 x 10 (feet)

I want to use the setup for use with the DVD player and also music. I listen to lots of rock and metal.

If anyone has some input it would be appreciated.

A little over £300 but you can get the Videologic Digitheatre DTS system for £310 from QED. The system is good but not upgradeable (unless you count changing the cables ;)) and works well with the Wharfedale, I have this setup at home in a slightly larger room than yours (13 x 10 Ft) and it's more than loud enough.

Details of the Silver version here (http://www.qed-uk.com/cgi-bin/q?i=9yLw239g2LX0&bg=225&bp=dtss&v=9)

Or the Black version here (http://www.qed-uk.com/cgi-bin/q?i=9yLw239g2LX0&bg=225&bp=dtsb&v=9)

The silver version has uprated drive units so it's not just the colour that's different although the black version may also have these now.

As an alternative, and one which often gets recommended by people on this forum, have a look at the Yamaha VS-10 system. It's better looking than the Digitheatre and not that much more expensive, more importantly it's apparently a better performer too (I say apparently because I haven't had chance to compare the systems as I've not seen one of these yet).

Check out the detailshere (http://www.qed-uk.com/cgi-bin/q?i=9yLw239g2LX0&bg=225&bp=10b&v=9), £340 to you squire ;)

As for the musical abilities, I'm sure someone will let you know how the VS-10 performs, the Digitheatre is OK but not as good as a dedicated Hi-Fi, the most irritating 'feature' is the player in this setup as the Wharfedale leaves gaps between audio tracks which can be annoying although it depends on what you're listening to.

As a supplement to Analog Kid's reply, You can get the VS10 for £309 inc delivery from leconcepts.

I'm very happy with the VS10 - there are 2 digital inputs, and another 2 stereo ones, so I have a dedicated CD player going through my VS10. Repro is OK on CDs but again, not as good as dedicated hi-fi equipment. My living room is 15 x 12-ish and I play DVDs on about half volume, but it does seem to vary from disc to disc for some reason.

I am in the same position.

Here is what i have come up with:

1. Videologic Digitheatre DTS - 350 quid - Dabs.com
2. Sony HTK475 (STR-DE475 receiver and SA-VE225 Pascal speakers) - 320 quid - empiredirect.co.uk
3. Sony HTK215 - 280 quid - empiredirect.co.uk
4. Yamaha HTIB40 (RXV420RDS receiver and NSP220 speakers)- 340 quid - empiredirect.co.uk
5. Yamaha VS10 Home Cinema Station - 299 quid - leconcepts.com
5. Scan AV6 - 150 quid - scan.co.uk

I am erring towards the Yamaha HTIB40 as that receiver range has received good reviews, and it isnt a proprietory micro system like the Sony HTK215 and Yamaha VS10.

Although i cannot find any reviews of the actual products above, except the Scan AV6 and the Digitheatre DTS.

If anyone has any experience with any of the above i would be grateful of your thoughts on them.

4. Yamaha HTIB40 (RXV420RDS receiver and NSP220 speakers)- 340 quid - empiredirect.co.uk

I'd go for that one.

Might be a long shot but next time you're walking past comet go in and have a look at the videologic systems, they always have the wrong price on them,I saw the dts system with a £199 price ticket on it in one store and £299 in another,if you find one and argue the point,ie not questioning the price untill you get to the till, when it scans up at £350 point out the ticket price, you may get away with it.
