View Full Version : Refinishing speakers
There was an accident during the summer. The sun shone on my lovely new Tannoy M3s and blistered the paint on the top of one of them. Actually, it's some kind of plactic coating. I know, it must have gotten pretty damn hot to do that.
The question is, how should I go about fixing the problem. I've thought about sanding the top off, re-painting and varnishing but i don't know what paint and varnish to use or how to get that grainy effect that they have. Or I could put some kind of tile on top of them. I don't know what to use, how to cut it or stick it or how to make the edges look nice.
Any suggestions or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Keep the sandpaper well away!!
Unfortunately those speakers are MDF covered with a vinyl-wrap (sticky-back plastic BP fans :) ), so I think you're gonna have to live with it. :(
How about a nice plant on top to hide it?
Nice idea, the plant thing but the blistering on the top is substantial. There is no longer a level surface to sit a plant on.
Surely to goodness, at the very least I can cut the blisters out with a stanley knife and glue a tile on top to cover the mess.

Yeah of course you can glue what you like on top it's your speakers. :p
For a tile, you'd need a tile cutter, a tile file & adhesive.
Can't you just slice into the blisters and expel the air? Sure it'd still look *****, but it's less graft than sticking a tile on top. :p
Thanks Bap, you've been enormously helpful.
B&Q, and various DIY stores do sticky back plastic - you may get something which would match.
Failing that, you could try a piece of veneer.
Or a piece of formica, a plastic floor tile etc etc.
Finally, if you can't get a good enough match, you could try a piece of veneer and paint it in grey metallic hammerite.
I'd have a word with the Manufacturers Quality control/ CS department and ask them why this happened. You're not living on Mercury FFS. This shouldn't happen.
or, better still, send it too them c/o QUALITY CONTROL DEPT, with the receipt, and ask them to repair/refinish/replace it.
Cheers
