Hi,

This is actually a query for my 709 owning brother. Can it play VCD's on CDR. I vaguely remember there being something about only certain brands playing on the 709... Is this true?

He had his firmware upgraded when he had some problems with discs, not sure if this makes any difference.

Any ideas from owners as to what brands to use...

I am planning to take some test VCD's to him this weekend and current brands I have "in stock" are Memorex 80 min cdr's (light greenish dye).... TDK CD-R74 (Blue dye layer) and cheapo Emtec 80 min discs on spindle (same colour dye as Memorex).

help, opinions, experiences?

Cheers
Mark

The 709 laser is very fussy about CDR.
Take a search throught the technophobia forums on 709online.com (http://www.709online.com/) to find which brands work best.

IIRC there were Vivistars available from Argos that lots of people had success with.

Hi,
As a 709 owner myself this was something of a holy-grail a little while back. But, as said above the Vivastar CDRs that Argos do in 100 and 50 spindle packs work everytime. There are some other issues in the way that the file structure of the VCD is put together (if he is creating his own) but Nero creates compatible VCDs fine for me.

If you are simply copying existing VCDs (that you own - naturally) then there is no problem.

thanks for the help... think I'll take a trip to Argos this afternoon for some Vivistars.

For the record I am not copying original VCD's. I am cutting VCD's from VCD compliant Mpegs using NERO. Let's just say he is a big Star Trek fan ;)
