I had a Pioneer E07 amp, but wanted to try out DD EX. So was happy to get hold of one of these from Currys. Originally planned to get it, try out EX and then sell it on. But this is amp is actually pretty good.
Sure, there's something missing that was on the Pioneer, but when you think of the huge difference in prices you really aren't missing that much going for a mid range one.
Have now sold the Pioneer on Ebay and i'm thinking about maybe the Denon 3802 or marantz 7200, but not sure if i'll notice the difference that much.
EX is actually pretty darned good. And i'm gonna stick to mid range amps in future, be a damn site better value for money.

I actually came from the other way round. I had a mid to low range amp that I really liked and I didn't think that the Sony would out perform it that much.
I was quite surprised to say the least. In my opinion an upgrade would still have been worth it even if I payed full wack for the Sony.(well, more like £470 as I'd never have paid full wack at Currys - although even at £600 it's still quite good)
...and I've already made several comments on ES/EX and how much I recommend it.
If looking to upgrade I'd recommend looking at 6.1 but there are several other amps on the market in the £600 range that would be worth an audition.

It's the same old hifi story of when you get to a certain level of quality the 'law' of diminishing returns kicks in. But there again maybe the rest of your kit wasn't up to getting the best out of the Pioneer, jon?

No I don't think it was to be honest. I think unless you've got a big place and can let rip there's not much point getting a higher spec amp.
I have the Pioneer 737, with that I can see the difference over lesser players, audio is a bit more tricky to my ears with all the speakers blazing.
If paying full price would have gone for the Marantz or Denon (now i'm struggling to justify paying £300 odd over what i'd get for the Sony). Not fussed about the music quality (which i don't mind that much), not that much of a music buff.
These Sony amps for the this price were one massive bargain.
Peeps, could not agree more (I had a technics 930).
Watch End of Days, the rooftop and chase scene is amazing in EX, feels/sound just like Arnie is pulling the trigger next to you !
