I am looking forward to getting one of the best asian action films of recent years, Ong Bak on dvd.
But i have heard that the HK dvd release will not have English subtitles as the title has been bought up by a western company.
Can anyone confirm if the HK release will have English subs and when is it being released?

there's been a lot of discussion about this over at www.bulletsnbabesdvds.com so have a look there.

All I know at the moment is it is only available without English subs, and there does not seem to be a release date for a new version with them...

I haven't heard anything about it being bought up by a Western company. The last I heard, it will get a HK release in the forseeable future with English subs:

"As has been reported, the dvd has NO SUBTITLES due to an agreement with HK dvd makers who will be releasing the film, but it is incredibly easy to follow. "

I don't know how reliable that is though. I am still hopeful there will be a subbed HK disc. However, I would recommend you get the Thai version now! ;) Very cheap.

Ong Bak is without a doubt the most awesome action film ever.

Nothing that Jet Li, Jackie or Donnie Yen has done can equal this Thai film.

The international rights have been bought by Luc Besson.

This is the person the director has always wanted to distribute this film.

If you watch the easter egg on the fantastic Thai dvd, you'll see graffiti on the wall in one scene that actually says " Hi Luc Besson we are waiting for you".

Bold claim, young man!

I have heard a little about this film and have just bought it from the link above. Will be interested to see what it's all about. It would have to go some to beat Fist of Legend, Drunken Master 2 or Legend of the Wolf but somewhere near those should be fine. :p

In my opinion it's better than those films, so you should be well pleased :) . Its filmed in such a way that it really does look like "full contact" fighting most of the time.

Fist of Legend is probably one of the finest films made in the East and is in my top 5 fav films of all time, but Ong Bak is an animal in a league of it's own.

The French dvd of Fist is well worth getting if you're a fan because not only does it feature a beautiful anamorphic picture but also features the original language option too.

As for Legend of the Wolf.....it's not even close to being a film that I'd quote as Donnie's best.
Iron Monkey, Tiger Cage 2 or Drunken Tai Chi are class examples of his work.

Legend of the Wolf is unlike anything else he has done and was his directorial debut, to boot. Maybe it's an acquired taste but it's hard-hitting, gritty, hyper-kinetic and very, very dark in its content. But of course I love Iron Monkey - who in their right mind wouldn't? :blah: As for Legend of the Wolf, you can call that a Donnie Yen film as he had complete control over it and a very small budget and turned out an exciting and fresh project. I would love a HKL treatment of that one!

The problem with Legend of the Wolf is the over-cranking.
Some of the fights are sped up to a point where they look ridiculous (the same reason his Fist of Fury tv series gave me such a headache).
As a director, Ballistic Kiss is much classier.

Ong Bak not only features some of the most brutal fight scenes it is also features some great stunts and nice use of props.

I can only imagine what kind of traditional film Tony Ja would have made during the Shaw Bros years ?

If you want an example of a film that comes close to the type of high impact fights in Ong Bak, watch the end of Sammo Hung's Pedicab Driver.

David G Rees

Does anyone know wether there will be a release of Ong Bak with subs?
I think Legend of the Wolf is vastly overated. Agree about the over cranking as well, why does Donnie Yen have to do this so often when he is obviously a talented martial artist anyway?

I'm quite sure the Hong Kong dvd will have English sub when it gets released.

For the record, the Thai dvd is amazing, especially for the price and IMO the lack of subs is no big deal.

There is also a 'MAKING OF' dvd available that has lots of great stuff that's not on the already feature packed Thai dvd.

Developments on the "International version" of Ong Bak by Luc Besson's company (Europacorp), and the HK release:

http://www.mhvf.net/forum/asian/posts/108223108244975.html (main thread)

http://www.mhvf.net/forum/asian/posts/108223108244992.html (key post)

In summary:

- International version may be cut by up to 10 minutes, with some new music/score added

- The HK dvd release will not have English subs

bit of a shame.

however, I was only interested in this film for the action, so any version will do. As far as I am aware, no action is being cut from the international print. The cuts will still upset a lot of people, so I recommend the unsubbed DVD as it's not exactly brain surgery to follow what's going on.

Ditto, was shown a VCD by my firend who fast forwarded to all the jaw dropping action scenes. Then he translated some of the dialogue and explained the gist of it, but I kinda guessed the plot and situations

After having watched the whole thing, I wonder what they would cut. Some might find it takes too long before the first fight scene, but I like the build up. They may have to change the music a little because of the cuts, but I hope they don't cut anything from the action scenes.

QUESTION TO ANYONE WHO'S SEEN IT:

During the underground fighting scenes, where the hero steps up for the first time, there's a shot of a vendor, who approaches to have a closer look, then comments on something. Is that TAKESHI KITANO? He looks a little like him and he's got the same twitch.

If it is easy to follow then I might invest see (despite the lack of subs). I may get the subbed cut version just for kicks. And there was me thinking that Luc Besson was cool...

They say US$12....

Is shipping a lot? Anyone know a rought uk price delivered? I'm guessing £12 delivered.

Cheers.

Edit: DOH! Just noted that shipping is included. $12 delivered?? Woahness!

BUY! BUY! BUY! That's the one. I ordered it twice from ethaicd with no problems. :) It's well worth watching even without the subs. I think you'll love it Bisc. Don't forget that Tony Ja did some doubling for Mortal Kombat. ;)

I've just re-read the thread which indicates there will be cuts to the Intl version of Ong Bak - surely if the director Prachya Pinkaew "knows that it could be tightened up for an international release" then maybe the Intl cut will actually be a better more refined film?

Also fmo other comments, it appears that the music isn't actually that good, so Luc Besson adding a new score could potentially be a very good thing...

You don't get an email confirmation if you use the normal (free) post option. I wouldn't say they were dodgy though. I ordered Ong Bak dvd twice (on separate occasions) and both orders arrived in less than a week. :)

The original music is not bad. You get your usual break-beat techno bits and pieces, traditional Thai during the Muay-Thai ring fights, but they weren't bad to the extent where you could stop enjoying the movie. If Yamakasi is anything to go by, then I hope Luc Besson leaves the music alone. I know he didn't compose the score, but GOD I hope he doesn't use the same person for Ong-Bak.

Unless this is a bad joke, HKL seem to have secured the rights for a 2 discer coming out in 2004. This is according to thier e-mail newsletter.

Edit: For anyone not receiving the newsletter, here's the quote

"I'm proud to let you know that we have receently secured the rights for the white hot Thai martial arts extravaganza ONG BAK starring the new action sensation TONY JAA. This film blew us away when we first saw it and its ideal for the Premier Asia label. A 2 disc special will be released next year, as it will for VOLCANO HIGH. You can find initial details for these two stunning releases in the NEWS section on www.hongkonglegends.co.uk.

Good news. Let us hope that it's the uncut print and not the Luc Besson edit (actually both editions would be nice).

I can see this film being a challenge to get released here uncut because it's full of head butts and elbow lunges...we'll see what the bbfc make of it. I'm thinking it'll be an 18.

Richie, it's incredibly easy to follow. It's so heavily action based that the fights speak for themselves and there's very little dialogue anyway. HKL/PA might not even acquire the correct cut of this movie and it'll be aaaages until a decent subbed version comes out so I 100% recommend buying this dvd. It's super cheap, cost me around £7 delivered from ethaicd!

Basically a toddler could probably follow this movie and write a decent review (with translations) on it. But then they're used to watching stuff that's not in English (Teletubbies, Pingu..etc..etc...).

Buy it mate, seriously you won't be disappointed.

edit: And just to add that Ong Bak is frikkin great......the fighting is the best Ive seen in a long while & yes the plot is easy to follow.
Basically the head of the village statue is stolen & the villagers send the best fighter to the city to retrive it. He gets involved in illegal fighting & basically wipes the floor with anyone he goes up against. The local Gangster loses money because of it & orders the peasant killed etc etc. Dead easy to follow & if you like action & cant wait for a subbed version, whats £7 now a days?!?!

Anyway hope this helps some of you decide!

There is an English-subbed version of the original edit of ONG BAK available at www.asiancult.com. Don't have it myself, but I've ordered a few rare Takashi Miike titles from them in the past and the DVD quality has always been excellent. I've found a few sources via BTorrent and Edonkey that have the full movie subbed in English as a xvid rip. (I guess the version Asiancult.com are selling is a DVD-R). You can also find the standalone sub track that you would most likely need to re-edit/re-author into any ripped DVD...also with the usual p2p progs...not really allowed to discuss it here though...

HKL released the international (shorter) cut of Volcano High...which may not be a bad thing as I've heard a lot of people enjoy this version.

I watched the longer director's cut and it was utter tripe IMO. So awful that I don't wanna watch it again, be it the director's cut or the supposedly better international cut.

Bought the Thai version from this Forum and did a google on subtitles for this film. I found a set and saved them as a text file to my Handsping Visor, this way I could understand the dialogue as it went on and enjoy the fighting (which needed no subs :D ).
Knowing what was said in the film did make a difference, even though it wasn't dialogue heavy.

A truely great film, the fighting was awesome and (as said before) jaw-dropping. I even watched all the extras (no subs available for these). A fantastic, brutal film.

Interesting that the titles and credits were written in Thai and English and in the 'Making of' the clips shown did have subtitles (and there was more swearing than in the subs I downloaded ;) ).

Highly recommended.

The vcd is listed as having English subs because it does. :p

The HK dvd doesn't English subs because it seems Luc Besson holds the rights for an English subbed DVD release, and somehow managed to stop the HK distributor (Edko) from putting them on the R3 dvd. Luc Besson's involvement was reported long before (several months) the HK dvd was released, but I guess that is the reason for the absence of English subs on the HK disc. Unless anyone knows anything else as to why? And quite how this issue of rights works in relation to Premier Asia's proposed R2 release next year I really don't know.

Ono

I watched the Edko DVD last night - had to use the Cantonese dub for better understanding and really enjoyed it.

Some of the best streetchase scemes around and the fights were also highly entertaining. All elbows and kness if you know what I mean ;)

If anyone is pondering watching this the plot is very straightforward and once you get the gist of it you can still enjoy the film without understanding the dialogue IMHO.

I hate you.
That was indeed the purpose of my post! ;)

The entire program can be seen here (http://www.copenhagenfilmfestival.com/website/program.php?az=1).

I would've liked to have seen The Eye 2 and Koma but I just can't find the time for them. And of course it would be cool to see Oldboy in a cinema but I've already watched the dvd 7-8 times.

Heheh nice one, some fantastic films showing!

The Eye 2 is a decent follow up to it's prequel. Just as good in my opinion. The DVD's cheap. I really look forward to hearing your thoughts on Taeguki. I'm looking forward to that film so much. Also be sure to let us know if Ong-Bak is cut/uncut... most likely uncut huh?

Now my attempts to make you hate me... I'm seeing 2046, Arahan + The Purifiers (Scotland's first big buget martial arts movie) at the Edinburgh Film Festival. Kinda weak compared to the films you're seeing but still.... :p

I'd be sorely dissappointed if it's some *******ised version with a new soundtrack (as per the rumours). The festival program doesn't say anything about it though...

..does anyone know anything about Ong-Bak 2 or indeed the other Tony Jaa project (featuring the Ong-Bak cast)...the Bodyguard or something?

I have seen The Bodyguard - I was visiting a friend in Thailand last month and they wanted to watch it on my laptop (thought it was the Whitney Houston one at first so I said no!) - it's an action comedy with lots of gunplay and fortunately a lot of visual humour as there were no English subs and I only know some very basic Thai (khrab!)

So like Ong-Bak it's easy enough to watch minus subs? Luc Besson doesn't have distribution rights for this does he? I may hold up for a subbed version... Cheers though.

I was told by some of my Thai friends that the "follow up" to Ong-bak is called "Tom Yum Gum" (which is a hot as in spicy soup dish in Thailand). Is that "The Bodyguard"?

bruce-leroy
21-08-2004, 00:35
No, pretty sure they are different films. I'm not 100% at the moment (will need to look it up again) but I think The Bodyguard is more of a lead vehicle for Tony Ja's co star (the bleached blonde, comic relief guy) in Ong Bak. Tom Yum Gum is a proper follow up to Ong Bak with Tony Ja in the lead. I think that's right. :D *scratches head*

Developments on the "International version" of Ong Bak by Luc Besson's company (Europacorp), and the HK release:

http://www.mhvf.net/forum/asian/posts/108223108244975.html (main thread)

http://www.mhvf.net/forum/asian/posts/108223108244992.html (key post)

In summary:

- International version may be cut by up to 10 minutes, with some new music/score added

- The HK dvd release will not have English subs

A shame about the tampering but the music is really bad, it lets the film down.

BiscLimpkit

The US teaser rocks... almost as good as the film.

I hate to say it but the new music (in the teaser) is well catchy... wonder if it'll be used in the international version.

Saw the festival circuit print (original uncut version, Thai language, English and Thai subtitles) at a film festival two weeks ago. The original subtitles were way better than the ones I've watched my Thai DVD with (by overlay on the dvd), and added to the story.
Still an incredible movie in ay form.

The French dvd has just been released and has some nice extras including a French music video featuring Tony Jaa and the making of the video too.
They should not have given the film a new score as it does not suit the film.
If they really had to, they should have given the film a more atmospheric, insturmental track.
The print is fantastic though.

You don't need to have them. I didn't bother with Born to Fight, which has slightly more dialogue, but it didn't detract from the action.

One thing, the women in Born to Fight had such whiny voices. So annoying!!!

I really wouldn't hold your breath, the PR people usually make quite a big song and dance to all the press about any interview possibilities etc from the off (how ever small and lame) at least a month or so in advance.

I get all the info from 'the associates' (HKL PR company) because of my job and they have mentioned nothing.

Sorry that made me laugh  Once you've seen it you'll understand, it's basically one extended, incredible fight/stunt scene with some dialogue thrown in as an after thought. There's a good guy, a bad guy, some sidekicks and that's it, nothing subtle or involving.

Actually to my ear the Thai langauge is so incredibly whiney to listen to I fast forwarded straight to all the fight scenes... think if it as one of those martial arts demonstration videos people post links to in the general forum.

Conrad: I generally dont support bootlegs and stuff, but if you really want to see it, get it from ebay. My copy was pretty much perfect. Good quality and the english subs made sense. If you dont want buy the bootleg, then buy the Hong Kong VCD. That has english subs.

Is the Hong Kong a VCD or SVCD, I ask because my Pioneer 626d doesn't supprt SVCD. Seems a shame though that a film so acclaimed hasn't got a decent release for the English speaking market. Maybe then people won't need to buy bootlegs..

Not if it's a bootleg no, sometimes they pass existing DVD soundtracks through a DTS encoder but that doesn't make it DTS. My HK R3 DVD has DTS-ES, it might be one of these, no subs though. i hate to suggest this but couldn't you wait until October?

Well personally I prefered it with subs. Even though the story isnt excellent.. there's a few nice jokes in there and its decent.

However its still very watchable without. For the first time, i'd definately say get one with subs. After that you can watch it anytime without subs as you know the story.

Well maybe cinema is the option although I have to drive 20 miles to the nearest one to show it so I will see ..otherwise I will get the DVD later in the year, after all the film is a couple of years old already so a few more months aren't going to make much of a difference.

In terms of the film, the sheer pace of Tony Jaa amazes me surley i think it must be speeded up. You know the moves he pulls of where he seems to pick up pace (kick bloke through car a example)

Impressive stuff though, love the repeat camera shots as well shows how out of reality the film really is :)

I've got that VCD - it's perfectly watchable as long as you don't expect DVD quality - the English & Chinese subs appear on screen at the same time, although it's not as intrusive as that sounds. On the whole the subs are ok as well, with just a few spelling/grammatical errors.

The Thai & Cantonese soundtracks play at the same time as well - I have to select 'left audio' via my remote to just get the Thai track. This might be true of all VCDS - I have no idea as Ong Bak is the only one I own :)

Unfortunately, the film has been cut for VCD though - I've not seen the DVD/cinema release, so don't know what specifically has been removed, but I did notice 1 or 2 jarring edits.

Consider yourself lucky tiger.

I am so annoyed right now

For anyone wanting to see this in the belfast my vue/odyssey dont go until tonight, or at least ring up and ask about it first.

Me and a mate of mine went for the 14:20 showing, bought our tickets and sweets and went to the screen. We sat there past 14:20 until about 14:30 - 14:40 and the film still didnt start and we started to wonder what on earth was going on.

Then some bloke comes and tells us that they didnt get the print! Or to be more specific, they didnt get one of the reels so had a chunk of the film missing!

To say we were annoyed was an understatement.

Still we got our money back and offered entry to another film for free. Just decided to go home though and go and see Ong Bak sometime this weekend/next week.

It will be showing from late tonight, basically one of the reels out of the batch they got was missing which meant some of the film in the middle was missing.

The reel was on its way and due to arrive tonight for the late night showing (and hence basically showing from tomorrow onwards as usual) but not for the 14:20 showing we went too. So an inconvenience but not too bad as the film reel is on it way :)

Saw it this afternoon, I was one of 5 people in the audience and we all laughed when Ting decks Big Bear. Class.
It was labelled a Premier Asia production and seemed to match the Thai DVD I own (though it's far better with subtitles) with all of Muay's sister's death.
The print was pretty poor, there were jumps in the film, the colour was rather washed out and the source material seemed digital in places. The speech sounded like the cast were talking in a bathroom (though that could be how it was filmed). The replacement music was very well handled and fitted in with the film (though I can't really recall the orginal score). The subs were big and white, but weren't bordered so in light scenes were difficult to read.
Was great to see this on the big screen, though you could see some of the (very necessary) padding worn by the stunt team. I had to leave right at the end so I wasn'tt [too] late for work, so I don't know if there were any differences with the end titles.

Overall? Well worth seeing and I'll probably add the Premier Aisa DVD to my collection when it's available.

Nope! You must have went to a later showing. I went to the 4pm showing and there was THREE people. Me, my mate and his girlfriend! It was awesome though because we could have little chats and stuff and anytime our phones would go off we could answer it without getting verbally attacked.

I must say, the film transfer as mentioned earlier wasnt quite up to scratch with a few little problems.. and the subs could have done with a black outline but the new soundtrack was f'n SUPERB. Major props to Premier Asia for the soundtrack. It fit the film PERFECTLY. Poor yanks got a crappy hip-hop soundtrack

yeah probably. I think most people are put off by the subtitles and will probably buy/rent it on dvd because Premier Asia always sub and dub their dvds

I saw this yesterday at a 5:10pm showing. I was the only one in he screening...

I think Premier Asia's vast marketing campaign for this movie may have failed. :D

Hey Staffy. You doing the EFF this year?

I seen this for a third time at the cinema last night and much like the first and second time i seen it, a group of people got up and left 2 mins into the film.

What a scandalously entertaining film this is. Excellent.

Cinema was 2/3 full at UGC Trocadero - everyone seemed to be having a good time

Hey Buddy! How goes it?

Yeah I'm definately planning on coming up for the EFF again this year... May stay for a whole week this time, but this'll be sorted when the schedule finally gets released.

I'm hoping that Lady Vengeance will turn up...

This film rocked.....I haven't enjoyed a martial arts performance as much since seeing the original police story. After seeing hundreds of HK movies it's refreshing to see a different style performed so well. Two thumbs up.

As usual my local cinema aren't showing this. Its a 12 screen cinema but with all the little illiterate scumbags knocking around here, a subtitled film won't get much business, maybe a cursory thursday night screening or something :oh-hum:

Looks a damn good price too. Anyone know if this is the international cut, uncut version orwhether it has the new score?

As said earlier, this is uncut and has a new score. I saw it and the film and new score are excellent.

A good film marred slightly by a bland story. Reminded me a bit of Van Dammes 'Bloodsport', his first staring role. The lead could be a bit more facially animated in the fight scenes, Bruce Lee style. Well worth a look.

Saw the Thai version on a Hong Kong DVD couple of weeks back.
Very fresh gritty look to it, most of the apartment conversational parts looked quite indie film. Not to polished in a theatrical martial arts manner or hollywood. Handheld camera's moving around Tony's fighting sequences. Loved the Tuk-tuk chase did remind me of the original Taxi in its energy.

See the Thai still getting on with there neighbours....
Now let me get this right a Burma gangster (Or could of been Cambodian can't quite remember) in a wheelchair with throat cancer who persists to smoke fags throu his neck, uses a throat voicevox mostly to do bad guy cackles smuggles Statue heads of Thai Buddas out of the country to sell off on ebay.ahem mean the blackmarket.

If we made movies like this about the French there'd be a flippin uproar.

Saw the 11.15am screening at the UGC Trocadero (there was about 15 of us) and thought it was great fun. The story is pretty basic, but the fights and stunt work - jumping through a roll of barb wire, followed soon after by leaping over cars  - were absolutely fantastic.
