View Full Version : Sub & music
Probably a daft question but here goes...
I've got a Sony 930 amp and would like to get a sub for it (the Tannoy mx that Justin has on offer as it'll go with the rest of my Tannoy set-up) but wondered what effect it'll have on music? Do you have to set the amp specifically to use it when playing music in the 2 channel stereo mode? Or doesn't it get used at all? (I don't mind have the extra base though ;-)

In 2 channel mode, that's exactly what you get - nothing is output to the sub (in this mode, DSP is bypassed)
If you want to use the sub, select AFD.

That's what I thought so if in AFD mode with the input being from a CD player (2 channel stereo) then it'll not use the sub at all. Is there a way to get it to use the sub to gave a base boost along with the two main speakers?

Wire the speakers to the sub directly (or vice versa, can't remember which) for music use.

Actually, in AFD mode, if a sub is configured on the amp, then it will use it - so you get two channel plus sub (bass redirection will take place). Switching to 2-CH mode, will turn the sub ouput off.
At least this is how my 830 works!
Thanks guys.
Just another quick question, bearing in mind that I'll be getting the amp via Justin at Upgrade Heaven, what sort of cable does the Tannoy sub require to connect to the amp?

A reasonable quality audio phono lead of the required length will do. A single lead is enough, but if the Tannoy has a left and right input, (the 930 has two sub out sockets) then a stereo pair will give a bit more gain (if that's required - probably not though).
If you can use a soldering iron, you can make up your own lead for about a pound/metre, which is as good or better than ready made leads costing 2-3x as much. Maplin sell suitable cable and connectors - CPC is cheaper but has a minimum £30+vat order for free delivery (but if you need other stuff at the same time, it's the best place). It's also a good place for ready made leads.
MikeK thanks, using a soldering iron is no problem so I'll look into that route for the cabling.
