Does anyone know how these 2 DVD players compare against each other.

The PS2 plays games better than the Sammy and the Sammy plays DVD's much better than the PS2.

It is amazing how people's opinions of the PS2 DVD playback differ. I read that someone believes their PS2 compares very well to their Pioneer 535 DVD player whilst others think the PS2 is the worst DVD player on the market!

My tuppence worth...

I was in my local Dixons on Sunday and a couple were interested in buying a PS2 and asked for a demo playing a DVD. Chicken Run was then duly brought out and they watched about 3 mins.

The couple were very impressed and commented on how much better it was than VHS and duly bought one.

I have *never* seen such poor playback of an MPEG source.
Jaggies all over and you could see the break lines (banding) in smooth colour gradient shading.

It was demoing on a smart £1000 W/S Grundig by the way.

I was considering buying one of these for the games AND as a second player but have been put off now.

I have a Pioneer 535 by the way, not the best player in world I know.

Ahhhhhhh, know some things before you rip into the PS2.

They would have been playing it through the lead that came with it most probably which is the crappy 2 leads audio, 1 lead video (composite??) I agree, you get a crap picture throught this...

BUT

Put it though an SVideo lead, and I think IMHO you get a cracking picture. OK not as good as your standalone £200+ players, but v good IMO.

Rant over.

What's the PS2 like when it comes to playing DVD titles that use seamless branching?

The faults with the picture really looked like bad MPEG decoding rather than poor interconnection.

Mines pretty good too, I used to have a 709 but got rid after having lip-sync problems and some disks not being readable properley or buggy......my current dvd player is an aiwa 370 which is far better than the ps2 but I think ps2 is a fair comparison to the 709 with slight picture quality loss but no bugs(afaik).
