i like:
battle royale
ring and ring 2
audition
and some other's i've seen on Film4/BBC4/SciFi - there was one i've seen a couple of times about people who die and they have to pick a memory to take with them - i think it's called"AFTERLIFE" - i was wondering what people think of that movie

i thought "Dead Or Alive" 1 and 2 sucked - they were stupid and didn't make any sense

what are the best Beat Takeshi Movies (and what region DVD is best - i heard something about 1 or 2 of them having poor subtitles)

i saw: "Versus", "The Eye", "Ichi The Killer"-(i dunno if i wanna see that though lol) and some others in MVC, but i'd probably buy them from PLAY or somewhere.

i like ones with killing
 :) :)

i dont really like animie or ones that are too WEIRD

thanks :)

The Eye is excellent. Very creepy ghost horror. I even thought it was better than Ringu and Audition.

The R3 has DTS and is anamorphic. It's also only £8 from DDDHouse or £6.50 from YesAsia with the current free shipping.

Or you watch something directed by the man who introduced Japanese cinema to the rest of the world -- Akira Kurosawa.

Seven Samurai and Stay Dog are my two favourites, but all the films he made with Toshiro Mifune are outstanding.

Freezer (aka Freeze Me) is a pretty good Jap flick (the Tartan R2 version is **** though, so you'll have to get the R3 if you want a copy on DVD)

Info on the film here: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266555/

The Eye is not Japanese.

Watch some of the old school samurai flicks, Lonewolf and Cub/Babycart/Kozure Okami. (All the same thing)

Twilight Samurai is a pretty new samurai film, i'm most looking forward to Zatoichi which comes out on DVD next month, woohoo!

It's strange really, ive seen a fair amount of japanese films, but most of them have been horrors.

Have you seen Dark Water? That is quite good, Kairo too.

Princess Blade is a good action flick (forthcoming US release from ADV films) and The Happiness Of The Katakuris is an outrageous musical/comedy from Takeshi Miike.

Both worth your time IMO

have you tried anime? if the idea doesnt put you off then try something like 'cowboy bebop' and be blown away. loads of series but there are good anime movies as well.

i might get The Eye on R3 DVD then.

older classic japanese movies - i might look out for aswell.

what about the best "beat" takeshi movies - there's a box of three of his movies but i'm sure there was something on here about some having poor subtitles, if anyone who'se seen some of his movies could let me know which are best and what region, that'd be cool too.

i watched some of Cowboy Bebop on the CNX Cartoon Network channel, and didn't really like it that much.
that movie Spirited Away looked pretty cool when it was on Film2003 though

Sonatine is an amazing film, shame the R2 release is so lacklustre. Quality Beat Takeshi action though, you might want to check out Hana-Bi too.

Not sure if it Japanese enough for you, but Avalon is pretty good, also, Shiri is not too bad.

The MIA releases of Boiling Point and Sonatine are ok, but Violent Cop's subtitles are rubbish. Whole exchanges of dialogue occasionally go by without any subs popping up.

Anyway, check out their Sonatine. You should also get the Korean releases of Kikujiro and Kids Return. Also get the UK releases of Brother - its got a great documentary about Kitano's movies - and Hana-Bi both of which can be found easily for under £6.

You also may want to try some of the old Zatoichi movies. The first few are only a tenner on dvdboxoffice.com

DDDHouse has several Korosawa films for $40 Hong Kong (no idea of quality though.)

As mentioned above if you're interested in japanese films, or films full stop, then you have to try Kurosawa.

I'd also second the recommendations for Takeshi Kitano, hana-bi is probably the best R2 dvd to try, the dvd's for sonatine, Boiling Point and Violent Cop don't have particularly good transfers.

Dark Water is v good, you'll enjoy it if you liked Ringu.

the Returner is an enjoyable sci-fi/action film, the R3 version is quite cheap has a decent picture, DTS, decent subs and even the extras are subbed.

Shiri is Korean, not Japanese.

I would recommend:

Shark Skin Man, Peach Hip Girl
Party 7
Shiki Jitsu
Down the Drain
Ping Pong
Waterboys
Swallowtail Butterfly
Happiness of the Katakuris
Tokyo Drifter
Branded to Kill
Pistol Opera
Hana-bi
Sonatine
Boiling Point
Any Kurosawa, but High and Low is a stand out
Any Miyazaki animation, particularly Spirited Away, My Neighbour Totoro, and Kiki's Delivery Service
Grave of the Fireflies

regards, Tim...

There is a Japanese film from the 60's that I always loved, Onibaba, but I don't think it is available on dvd at the moment - would love to be proved wrong though. It's beautifully filmed (in black and white) and has many visually striking and memorable moments. It's the story of a mother and daughter who scrape a living by luring lone soldiers and samurai to their death and selling their armour.

Any Kurosawa film will do the job - the guy is a genius

My favourites are Seven Samurai and Kagemusha

Give Samurai Fiction a go!

You can get a good R3 Korean version from the regular places.
