This new phillips recorder looks very nice. £1300 is a bit steep if its crap though, so has anuone had a play and why dont Currys (where I saw it) sell the discs for it?

Avoid! Linear recording !! No real advantage over a VCR 9other then quality) and as usual Philips have gone their own way with a unsupported format (FOr example, the upcoming Sony deck is really a rebadged Pioneer DVR7000, which is Pioneers 3rd gen machine (3 years in Japan now!).

Consider the excelent Panasonic DMRE20. Although DVD-Ram based, it will also record onto DVD-D discs, and unlike the philips is both cheaper, and is more flexable with Tivo like / Sky+ features (watch the begining of a program that you are still recording for example).

Cheers

I took the plunge and bought one yesterday.
Sevenoaks, where I got it from, didn't actually have any blanks in but the local Dixons are doing them for £14.99.
Sevenoaks said they will be doing them for £14, which while it is
undoubtedly expensive, is still cheaper than the £20 that was predicted.
I know there will be countless discussions about the pros and
cons of the different formats but this machine suits my needs,
especially its editability.
I record a lot of stuff off the TV and the fact that I can delete all
the ads and the bits of other programmes you inevitably get when
you timeshift swung it for me.
I've only had a bit of a play so far but I know I wont be using the
EP (4 hour) mode too much as it looked about as good as VHS
to me. Okay for "watch and wipe" but not for archiving.
The SP (2 hour) mode looks great but I think it'll be LP (3 hour)
mode for me until the blank prices drop.
I copied a recording on it, chaptered the ads. break, then deleted
them and played it back where the break was and (apart from an
audible speed up of the player) there was no visible mark. Well
happy with that and the machine in general.
