I have a cheap & cheerful system consisting of a Pro Logic TV & a Wharfedale 750S player. (I wouldn't go that way again, but I have to start from where I am now.)

If I have a 5.1 track, the LFE disappears into the ether, which is a bit of a bummer, as explosions then tend to be the quiet sections! This happens for all settings on the Wharfedale & TV. It wouldn't be a problem, except some DVDs come with only 5.1 tracks.

So, if I had an active subwoofer with a built-in decoder, I could run a digital lead from the player to the sub, and test the foundations. Obviously, I'd have to play with the levels a bit to get them to match.

Does such a thing exist at a low price, say up to £100? Or will I have to burst a crisp-bag at the right moments?

IF you had a subwoofer with a built-in 5.1 decoder you would be unique.

Stick with the crisp bag.
But what you gonna do when someone fires a machine gun ?
:D

(Ignore me, I'm feeling cantankerous).

If the Wharfie had a 6 channel output on the back and an internal DD decoder (I don't know whether it has either) you could plug the subwoofer output straight into an active sub. I reckon though that an active sub might work in your current set-up, using the audio outputs from the back of the tv or dvd player connected to the sub's inputs.

Plenty of cheap subs out there ... richer's a good place to start. You could always take one for a demo I guess, or take it back if it ain't right.

Thanks for those. No, there's only 2-channel out on the player. I think if the LFE was routed through them, then it would also be in the SCART, no?

I'll just have to assume they use SBD.

A sub with an integrated decoder? Sounds like a job for a Digitheatre or Digitheatre DTS or possibly one of those Yamaha VS-10 jobs.
