Hello again --- i recently posted regarding the new 21" SONY TV i've just bought and problems with playback / interference ---- I recall reading a post around the same time regarding a guys set that bends the picture slightly at the top of the screen -- well at least mine doesn't, I thought, as that's the kind of thing that's likely to annoy me.

imagine my suprise when I noticed the other day that the same effect occurs on my TV as well -- this is a shame as the SONY set is clear, sharp and quiet (you know the way some sets have a high pitched background whine - this one is nice and quiet).

Does anyone one know why this effect occurs -- the picture output is not perfectly straight, in a similar way to a monitor that has had it's settings altered slightly. It is most noticeable when there are perfectly straight vertical lines near the top of the screen -- they bend slightly, or when you are watching a letterboxed presentatation -- the black bars are closer to the top of the screen on the left and lower on the right ------- someone save my sanity and explain this strange phenomena ---- else could anyone reccomend a similar quality 21" NTSC compatible TV for around £300 to replace it with.

Hi,

I do believe your tv is suffering the effects of earths gravitational pull. As the tv settles after its initial running in period the picture may develop some slight anomolies, such as the bending you are witnessing.
To be honest its nothing to be too concerned about as the tvs tube is susceptible to pretty much any magnetic field.
Ask anyone you know if they can recommend a good tv engineer who can access the engineer menu in the tv and put whats wonky back to straight again. Happened to my Toshiba widescreen after two weeks use, took an engineer all of 5 minutes to put it right.

Hope this helps mate

I get the same effect in the top right corner of my Toshiba 3787DB !

My mate also has a Toshiba 25" and it does the same !

It appears to be quite common in Toshiba's but depends on the Manufacturer.

Here's an old explanation I found :

GEOMETRIC LINEARITY

What is it? Geometric linearity is a television's ability to reproduce sizes and shapes accurately. Most televisions distort straight lines and shapes. Geometric linearity is determined by the quality of the deflection yoke, an array of wire coils wrapped around the neck of the picture tube. The electron beams passing through this neck of the tube must be bent as they move away from the center. If the beams are not controlled precisely, the picture will have poor geometric linearity. Circles appear oblong, squares appear rectangular and straight lines bend, not very desirable.

Most Sony sets have a function to adjust magnetic rotation, it ranges from - 5 to +5 I think.
If you use a letterbox image then you an adjust the set to get the horizontal edge parallel to the tubes edge. That will sort out the picture output to straight (just make sure your sober when you adjust it;) ).

As for the vertical lines bending, I'm not sure adjusting the rotation would resolve that one. But you can always try.

many thanks for all the tips and info there..... ob1rob - i'll check on that rotation thingymyjig tonight -- :) thanks also for the definitions and tips about the engineers master and westy , i'm still under guarantee so maybe some sony guy can come out to sort it.....

It could be the effects of Macrovision, I get a quite severe bending in the top inch of my sony screen when watching protected R1 discs.
