Having waited so long for a proper widescreen version of this movie, putting up with the old pan/scan version for the last few Christmas's, I read the user review of the 20th Anniversary edition on Amazon.com (http://www.thedvdforums.com/affiliatelink.php?localaffiliateid=25) and am at best dissapointed. Matted Widescreen!? Why-i-oughtaaa...
I was about to say that it may have been a full screener matted for theatrical presentation, but the poster on Amazon was convinced that wasn't the case.
Oh well, I'd suggest getting hold of the new SE anyway. It's a nice little package and my copy is waiting patiently for Xmas.
It would be interesting if they released the sequel "A Summer Story" on DVD. There's certainly enough material in the Jean Shepherd book "In God We Trust" to make two movies. However, reviews for "A Summer Story" aren't so hot....

Does anyone know anything about the new UK release regarding tech specs and features? I can only find it listed at HMV (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://clkuk.tradedoubler.com/click?p(18710)a(60823)g(280345)url(http://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=280;-1;-1;-1&sku=718667)).

Was that the one with Charles Grodin as the father. Some funny lines especially Grodin calling a cop "a son of a bitch" under his breath but nowhere near as good as the original film.
The leg lamp

Cheers, Simon, for word on My Summer Story. Still haven't got round to it, and it has now been released on US R1!

Is this ever on uk tv? anyone know if it's on this year?
Otherwise I'm gonna have to give it a go finally.

I think BBC2 showed it sometimes.
If thats the bob clark movie You can get it for 3 quid in tesco.
Made in 83, I cant believe Ive missed it all this time.
I got it yesterday in amongst the cheapies, they had a fair few xmas films for the same price. Its the full screen version tho, but hey 3 quid:D
Edit, watched it last night and its anamorphic 16.9 widescreen, but why does it say fullscreen on the back?
Strange little film, wasnt sure if I liked it or not. The father was real funny.
I got it at hmv in the end (couldn't find it at my local tesco).
Yup, 16:9 and a nice transfer. No extras or anything though but nevermind I wasn't expecting any.
The leg lamp! and Ralphie's brother made me  too (reminded me of when me and my bro were kids)!
Delightful film. :)

Darren McGavin (aka Kolchak) is the father and is quite superb, hon mention goes to Melinda Dillon. Plus, you get to see Scott Farkus (the bully) return in Resident Evil:Apocalypse (doggies) and Freddy v Jason.
It's one of those movies that grows on successive viewings, and I hope it does for you.

This is quite simply the best Christmas film ever :thumbs:No it's not. You obviously like it but having it watched the other day, all I can say is it's very over rated.

tsk, lies.
I remember watching it on Sky Movies in the late 80s when I was a kid and loving it, but never being able to find it since. I finally found a copy 2 years ago and just as ace.. but surprisingly completely bonkers, which I never picked up on when I was young. Top entertainment.
