Aaaaarrrggh! :(

I got my brand spanking new Toshiba TV delivered yesterday.
All seemed great but I have now noticed a pretty bad problem.

Patches of colour fade in and out VERY slowly on the TV and tint whatever is underneath (white becomes light green, red becomes purple, indigo). The patches seem to be in the same place each time, but I can't be sure.

This is got really annoyed, I've unplugged the set for a few hours and will see if that makes any difference.

Anyone got any ideas of what could be causing this, and more importantly what I should do?

:(

If there are noticeable colour tints on the same area of the screen it sounds as though a magnetic source has been near to the set.

The screen can be degaused (hope I've spelt that right) to remove the effect. You will need to speak to your supplier to arrange this though as it's done by an engineer.

Have you got anything, such as a none shielded speaker on or nearby the TV?

Well, that could be it. I do have a DVD player and speakers nearby. But not so close that I'd expect it to affect anything.

I've loked around on newsgroups and it seems that "doming" is my problem. It seems to occur when a white/bright grey background is screen.

I turned the brightness + contrast down and it didn't seem to have much effect.

Watching any scene with a white background is a chore as blue patches start to form, surely it shouldn't occur this easily?

If it does occur on bright patches (sky is the most common, and you get a blue tint on the left and a yellow on the right), then you've got the same problem as mine has.

I had mine (28W8DB (i think)) taking for repair (3/9), they told me it needed a new screen, its coming back tommorow(12/10) :D

Er...wow, that's EXACTLY the problem. Let me know how much it's improved, will ya?

I bought the TV from John Lewis, do you reckon I should contact them or Toshiba?

:( (but its still beter than my small portable:D)

It still occurs but to a lesser extent, and thats with a replacement CRT. So it looks like it's a design/manufacture flaw.

Given the time it took (month+) I wouldn't bother again. I'm gonna use it, and wait until unbreakable comes out (29/10) then decide if I'm happy with it...if not it'll have to go back, and unfortunatly I'll have to spend more to get something like a panasonic, sony etc

Somebody mentioned to me that it might be due to the earth's magnetic field interfering somehow, so you might wanna move it to a different location, and then try again.

Unfortunatly I'm limited to where I can put it, so I can't really test this.

I find just switching the set off for about 30 secs fixs it for me.

My 28W93B does not have this problem so it is definately not a inherent design fault.
I have not seen this mentioned before, so it seems a strange coincidence that two people come up with the same fault.
Definately contact Toshiba (or John Lewis) and get it sorted .

If you let John Lewis sort it , then they may give you a loan set.Just hope they have decent service engineers. I have had terrible attempts at repairs under warranty in the past from Comet and ENL (which do repairs locally for Sony centre amongst others).

Toshiba told me to contact the seller, they in turn contacted a local repair shop.

If it isn't a design fault, then what the hell causes it?? I had exactly the same problem but an awfaul lot worse with a Thomson wide screen.

If it is magnetic interference then suggestions for stopping it?

Also John, mine dissappears eventually if the bright patch moves/dissappers ie changeing to AV2 (nowt connected therefore black) also clears it.

I think i'm gonna phone tosh again and talk to them, they might have some suggestions.

Just moving to dark image cures it - it only actually appears every couple of weeks - following these methods cures it in seconds.

It's a shame really because apart from this the picture is great.
:(

Thanks for the help/advice guys, I'll be on to John Lewis next week...

Hi there Alegol1983,

I have just purchased the same model from JL on their great price match offer. Will be delivered next Thursday. I just wondered if you can tell me which DVD you tried to test this White problem with. Because I also ordered a technication to setup the set, so I can test the set straight away if it has the same fault.

Great if you could help.

I had problems with The Patriot, Erin Brokovich, also unbeatable is supposed to be a good test.

I found that it only ever appeared on Sky Digital and even then it was purely random

Well, since calibrating my set (turning down Brightness, contrast etc) the problem MAY have gone away (ie. I haven't seen it since, but then again - I haven't watched many DVD's either...).

MrLondon, give (if you have it) O Brother Where Art Thou a whirl.

Don't forget to turn contrast and brightness dowm as well (I have my contrast and brightness settings on 35 and 45 respectively, actually it could be the other way round...but you get the idea.)
