At SplashDVD, this is advertised as full screen 1:1.133 ratio, with no extras. Does this version exist, or is it just a Splash admin error? Everywhere else ive seen it has been 1.85 ratio
As far as I know, the version available everywhere (bar Japan) on Manga is non-anamorphic 1.85 (or thereabouts) with no extras, so it's probably a mistake on their part.
The only anamorphic one is the Japanese release, which would be the one of choice bar the dubtitle issue (Kanedaa did a good review of the two on DVD Times).
The Manga one is pretty good, however - worth getting.
Just for info, the new Italian 2-disk rekease of "Castle...." is listed as having an anamorphic transfer, but unfortunately it does not come with English subtitles (or a dub).

Not too bothered about an anamorphic transfer for this really... just as long as it's not 4:3!
Anyone seen the re release version of this yet ( I know its not released until 17th October, just wondered if anyone had a promo).
Is the picture quality better than the current R2 version?
Dunno - but coincidently, I watched this for the first time this afternoon.
At SplashDVD,
How times have changed :D

It's not that uncommon to see etailers listing non-anamorphic 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 letterboxed transfers as 4:3. (Well, across Asia it's pretty common, over here it is less common :D)
So has anyone seen the re-released version yet?
I've had a brief look through the opening scenes and can confirm they've used the Japanese remastered transfer. They've also done an NTSC>PAL transfer and overcompressed it leading to plenty of artefacting. Here is a particulary bad (or good depending how you take my meaning) example...

I find this on most of the Optimum discs, most likely a result of them squeezing the storyboards onto the one disc. Obviously the film doesn't look that way all the time, but the ghosting and artefacting are quite distracting on a PC monitor. The less image conscious viewer should be happy though simply by way of them using the gorgeous japanese master as the source.
Here it is in a quieter moment, looking better - <a href="http://www.dfoster.dsl.pipex.com/other/cagliostro-r2good.jpg" target="_blank">Click for image</a>
cheers Kanedaa,
So picture alone the Jap one is still the winner? Any ideas whether the extras will make it a viable purchase?
Yeah the R2J is still best for image quality. Extras on the Optimum disc are just an intro by Jonathan Clements, storyboards and 4mins of design sketches. Nothing to make it essential if you already have the R2J.
Where is the cheapest place to get the Jap version from? (its about time I bought an original copy ;) )
You can get the JR2 from CD Japan (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=VWDZ-8032#) for ¥4700 plus ¥500 shipping, but not likely to be customs free; I'm sure Yes Asia (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump.php?url=http://global.yesasia.com/assocred.asp^QS^LU83C65N+http%3A//global.yesasia.com/en/Index.aspx) will have it (and be customs free) but their search engine completely defeats me - I can't even find Howl's Moving Castle and I ordered it from them :brickwall
Edit: try this (http://global.yesasia.com/en/prdGrpDept.aspx?pid=1004015852§ion=anime&code=w&version=all&) - it lists all of the Japanese Miyazaki DVDs on YA... but still no Lupin
You could also try Amazon Japan (http://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005HTQX/ref=pd_ts_d_13/250-0438757-0073838) but more expensive by about ¥1000 than CD Japan.
Cagliostro is spelt wrong on YesAsia, making it hard to find it you search using that as your keyword. Here it is - Cagliostro (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump.php?url=http://global.yesasia.com/assocred.asp^QS^LU83C65N+http%3A//global.yesasia.com/en/prdTransfer.aspx/pid-1001818206/)
Remember the R2J has dubtitles, in case you weren't aware.
How is it spelt Dave - I can't get YA links to work!
Edit: Aha - search for 1001818206 - that seems to do it!
So which would be the definitive version to get then?
Indiana Jonezzz...

Just reading through this thread, I have a copy of the R2 Japan Cagliostro DVD that is in MINT condition. I might be happy to part with it if you're interested 'ljp'. Just contact me and we could discuss a price  If I should have started a new thread or put this in the classifieds then sorry :dork:
Anyone got the new R1 SE version yet? Any comments?
