Lost In Time

Starring Cecilia Cheung and Lau Ching Wan

Summary:

Minibus driver, Ah Man (Louis Koo) dies in an accident during his shift on his minibus whose license number is DY1314. Hit by the bad news, Siu Wai (Cecilia Cheung), Ah Man's wife, knows she has to carry on, especially when there is Lok Lok, the son of Ah Man and his ex-wife. Trying to earn a living for Lok Lok, Siu Wai repairs the minibus and becomes a driver herself. She faces many difficulties as a minibus driver, but Dai Fai (Lau Ching Wan) helps her overcome the problems ...

Solid tear jerking drama directed by Derek Yee (c'est La Vie Mon Cheri, Full Throttle, Viva Erotica) his first movie in 4 years gives Cecilia her 1st chance to really shine and show her acting worth in a HK production. Previous HK efforts have Cecilia trying to overcome dire scripts and awful stories that doesn't do her or any other actors and actresses any justice whatsoever. Cecilia's only other worthy film happens to be the Korean favourite Failan.

Derek Yee has always stood out as one of very few directors in HK who actually tries to show the quieter and generally more characteristic side of HK life. His movies are full of location shots (Shau Kei Wan being the Location of choice this time round) and could be mistaken for short tourist promos for the other side of HK that never gets shown ... Actual street stalls, restaurants and highway under passes that only locals would use ... attention to detail is certainly something that is always found in Derek Yee's films ... this is further extended in the chosen subject matter which underlies this romantic drama about trying to forget ... The infamous HK mini-bus industry is under focus here where you will learn that being a mini bus driver is no simple affair with triad payments for rights of routes being the least of your problems.

The star of this movie is Cecilia and we all know she is a great little actress but no other director in HK will ever give their actors and actresses the kind of depth to perform as their ability allows them than Derek Yee... sometimes this backfires as Andy lau and gigi leung never looked more wooden in Full throttle but Anita Yuen put in her career highlight performance in Ces't la Vie Mon Cherie (also starring Lau Ching Wan) as well as other memorable roles by Chow Yun Fat and Tony leung in The Lunatics.

Nothing original story wise but the performance by Cecilia is a must see (although not as good as Anita Yuens') and although she has lost too much weight she is still a real looker and all hot blooded males will no doubt fall for her plight and get really involved ... I was close too tears but there must have been an onion eater in the audience or something ...

Been a fair time since I've watched a film starring old horsey mouth.

Will keep an eye out for it. :D

Cheers for that Cirrus, I've been a fan of Cecilia since seeing the fantastic Failan so I'll be picking this up.

Thanks Cirrus!! Been looking forward to this, and even more now that I've read your review. Cecilia does seem to have "aged" quite a lot in 2 years, but she's still a stunner! There are a number of HK films she's in that I really like although they are admittedly quite cheesy.

Yep, can't wait for this one. No-one does HK dramas like Derek Yee. ;)

Another thumbs up for Lost in Time.

Lau Ching Wan (along with Tony Leung Chiu-wai, the greatest actor working in Hong Kong today, for my money) automatically makes this worth watching... I'm really looking forward to it.

It's made over $10 million hk dollars already from the generally good word of mouth. Looking forward to this one :)

Well this was a real tear jerker, it's been a while since I've cried whilst watching a film (actually it might well have been failan, thinking about it). certainly one of the better films I've seen from HK in the last 6 months or so and great to see Cecilia on the screen again. Definitely worth picking this up for the £6 or so it costs from Yesasia.

I pretty much agree with what Cirrus says although I could probably watch Cecilia read the yellow pages anyway.

It's damn annoying the way the dvd English subtitles replace the Chinese names of the characters with western ones though. I can't understand why they do that.:cuckoo:

Def agree that it's a touching film. It's a little different in the sense that it asks the viewer to invest their emotions into it from the start, whereas most other films try to build up to an emotional climax. This pays off because you're involved with the characters, and everything that happens makes compelling viewing. It left me feeling warm inside, and I even prefer it to "C'est La Vie", although both are fantastic.

There was only one point in the film which nearly took me out of it, with the appearance of an actress (Lee San San?) who was also in "MLESG" and "Honesty". It seemed as if she was playing the same character in the latter 2, thanks to her tendency to overact, and it was no different here, but thankfully she was only in one scene.

All in all, a film worth waiting for.. and rather aptly named too! :)

Wow! One of the best performances I've ever seen from any actress in ages. Old horsey mouth was simply stunning in this.

In a way, her real life loss of weight adds to her role in this if you know what I mean. The scrawny look that she now has just compounds the premise that her character is struggling to eek out a living for her and the kid.

No tears from me (or the Missus) but I was really fearing the worse towards the end. I would probably have slit my wrists if:

one of them had died in another mini bus crash at the end just as things were coming together..

Think I've been watching too many Korean films of this type where this would have probably happened.

Lau Ching Wan. The kid is dead cute too.

Anyway, yes. Fanatastic film. Horsey mouth is now officially the best living actress in Hong Kong. Lau Ching Wan is a fine actor too.:)

Ono gives this 8.5/10 :notworthy

I think Cecilia's looks are a handicap as many people don't take her seriously but with decent roles and increasing maturity she will continue to be a plaesure to watch.

Great screencaps Ono ... I'm gonna nick 'em for my own use ... :norty:

good emotional drama that was touching all the way trough and didnt try to wallop you over the head by being over-sentimental or trying to pull the heart strings too much,

Cecilia pulled out a great performance and i know its been said before but man is she painfully thin

surprised her jeans did not fall over as she had no backside to keep em up,

and lau looks to have lost a bit off chubbage as it looks like he's dropped a few pounds,

the child actor was very good as well, hit the part just right, when he made that call to his dads

ONE NIGHT IN MONGKOK Cecilia Cheung Pak-Chi and Daniel Wu (Ng Yin-Tso)

Directed by Derek Yee Tung-Sing,

ONE NIGHT IN MONGKOK tells the story of a Mainlander (Wu) who comes to Hong Kong to search for his wife. Cheung plays the hooker-with-a-heart-of-gold who befriends him.

Another Derek Yee and Cecilia film!

Pics of Cecilia in slutty tights :norty:

She won something this year for her role in RoK though. So did Andy for that matter, they took double honors iirc.

I finally got to see this last night, and it was great!

Another winner from Derek Yee -- even better than C'est La Vie, Mon Cheri (the writing was better, although I'm not sure about the acting of Cecilia being better than Anita Yuen's spirited performance). Any tears shed in this film are well-earned and not manipulated from the viewer. Good stuff. :D

I'm so glad to hear that Cecilia Cheung is working with Yee again for a new film! Playing a hooker with a heart you say? Sounds like it could be a character somewhat similar to Shu Qi's porn star character in the very enjoyable Viva Erotica, also directed by Yee. Leslie was so good in that one, may he rest in peace.

Since I ordered Lost in Time from YesAsia's U.S. site, I ended up with the Tai Seng DVD. Boooo! Just a question to those of you with the Panorama DVD: Were there any English translations for the notes on the HK DVD? And were the subtitles near the beginning incredibly rapid-fire, making it nearly impossible to read them without pausing? (especially the dialogue between Cheung and Louis Koo).

I'm the first to admit that I'm a sceptic when Cecilia's acting talent is involved but with all the Korean thread regulars in here recommending this movie it sounds like a solid film to pick up!

Absolutely, well recommended.
Also the version out at the moment comes in a rather odd long box. When you open it, one side contains the amaray, the other contains some quite large "postcards" of scenes in the movie.
great value if that sort of packaging floats your boat:thumbs:
