A favourite of mine is an Argentinian film from the 80s called La Deuda interna (http://us.imdb.com/title/tt0092880/) (Veronico Cruz in English speaking countries) - a remarkable and moving film set in the Andean mountains. You can get it on R1 - I don't know what the DVD is like. It's listed as full frame, which may be the OAR.

hope its not rude to seek help in this thread but city of god has sparked of some interest in brazilian cinema and i'm wondering if anyone knows anything about these films:

o assalto ao trem pagador (assualt on the pay train) (http://www.dvdbrazil.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewitem.asp?idproduct=693)

or deus e o diabo na terra do sol (black god white devil) (http://www.dvdbrazil.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewitem.asp?idproduct=590)

they look pretty interesting and i'm probably going to pick them up but just checking to see if anyone konws anything about them or has seem them and can give them a recommendation (or a thumbs down)

Man of the year is well worth seeking out (due for release on R2 late Jan)

How about Sangre Eterna (available on R1) for a bit of South American Genre (a blend of Vampire D&D and Goth) film making?

Japon (available from Artificial Eye) is also worth a look.

walter salles's 'Behind the Sun' and 'Central Station' are both excellent pieces of films making and can be picked up relatively cheap.

Check out 'Nine Queens' - it's kind of an Argentinian version of 'The Sting'. Quality

The Chilean 'Taxi Para Tres'(sp?) is pretty good.

And just for this time of year 'Felicidades' from Argentina is worth a look, though it's a bit on the quirky side.

I saw Central Station recently and found it a very powerful and moving piece of cinema.

Highly recommended.

yeh but when was the last time you heard of a film from Central America? I think in cinematic terms anything south of the (US) border is South America.

Yes. I saw it a couple of years ago at the Edinburgh Festival (where it was called The Trespasser). Not in the same league as Man of the Year, but well worth a look none-the-less. Is it available on DVD in the UK ?

Inbetween this post and now, Salles also made and released 'The Motorcycle Diaries' which I thought was an extremely pleasant film.
